Hey Shave Ice rocks! I support the Matsumotos in their choice of profession! Whenever I hit Hawaii I always grab me some shave ice- it’s better than all the dead coral art…
Say what you want, but Matsumoto Shave Ice RULES!!! Always has, always will!!! This photo shouldn’t be here on this site — Matsumoto Shave Ice is a landmark on the North Shore of Oahu!!
You may laugh, but Matsumotos is the most famous shave ice place in Hawaii and tourists are BUSSED IN to stand in line for an hour at their shop. They’ve made a ton not only on shave ice, but on merchandise.
The Matsumotos actually rock the Shave Ice world on the North Shore of O’ahu. They pretty much define the whole industry. So this portrait, TOTALLY makes sense.
Sweet! And I love that it’s not shaved ice, it’s “shave ice”. They’re all about action verbs, not those lame passive-verbs-turned-adjectives. Marketing 101, duh!
There are things/people in Hawaii that are the norm but seem totally out of place in the the rest of the world. Would have been better if he was pouring the syrup on his father’s head
I was looking at the prices…not too bad….2.75 for a large with ice cream and beans…. Rita’s (which sucks)is like 3 something for a small ice .
In Point Pleasant NJ where I grew up, there’s a stand called Strollo’s light house italian ice…they were on a Bobby Flay special on food network. They are quite yummy…check em out if you are ever in the area.
You guys laugh now, but they’re probably rolling in dough! I knew a guy in school whose parents sold snow cones at a fair in the summers…financed their kids’ ways through private school. A little awkwardness is worth it!!! You ROCK those short shorts and shaved ice Matsumotos!!
I don’t see how this is an awkward family photo! That is a classic 80’s pic, and those two guys were just cuttin’ it up! Having lived in Hawaii, and having eaten PLENTY of Matsumoto’s shave ice…I guess it makes me a little biased. (Dr Zog and Tracy were dead on in their comments!) And you know…that family is probably rolling in $$$ right now—and they earned every penny!
I totally agree, Matsumoto’s is the best shave ice on Oahu! Also, I grew up in California where long sleeved shirts with shorts was what we wore when it started getting cold. We switched to sweaters with shorts when it REALLY got cold.
Oh. My. God. I saw this in my journalism class, and everybody started laughing. I want to meet these people and shake both of their hands.
Tis is TOTALLY now my background for everything.
***Any comments that are offensive to the point of being viciously personal, racist, homophobic, exceedingly profane, violent or too graphic in nature won't be posted. We want to keep this site a friendly place to be awkward. Thanks!***

Matsumoto’s Shave Ice is famous, so I guess that really is where the money is. But, yeah, the photo is awkward.
Matsamuto’s shaved ice and short shorts emporium.

Im glad someone remembered it!

The grandfather’s arms don’t make those snocones seem very appetizing.

I will consider printing this picture on a t-shirt.
Hahahhahha
ALOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHAAAAAAA
Shave ice? Sexy.
(Is that a picture of a compound bow on his shirt?)
I surely would give this shave ice a try.
As awkward and funny as this picture is, I would totally buy sno-cones from these guys. They look like nice people with a sense of humor.
It’s the Chuckle Brothers!
This may be an awkward pic, but its the best damn shave ice on Oahu! Now I miss it…
THIS EXACTLY! Possibly even the best damn shave ice in the entire state.
Hahahaha! I love it! These guys got it right… You should see the line outside of Matsumoto’s.
Awkward, but kind of sweet.
Say what you want, but Matsumoto Shave Ice RULES!!! Always has, always will!!! This photo shouldn’t be here on this site — Matsumoto Shave Ice is a landmark on the North Shore of Oahu!!

“…and be sure to try this month’s special flavor: TEQUILA SHOT!”
The Matsumotos actually rock the Shave Ice world on the North Shore of O’ahu. They pretty much define the whole industry. So this portrait, TOTALLY makes sense.
I do hope they were able to enjoy their Shave Ice cones after the photo shoot.
the funny thing is, i’ve seen those guys on pbs on “the ice cream show” special. their shave ice stand is famous in hawii. people love it.
what’s up? Hawaii in the house!
that’s some good shave ice, yo.
The secret to the Matsumotos award winning snow cones was the tequila
Sweet! And I love that it’s not shaved ice, it’s “shave ice”. They’re all about action verbs, not those lame passive-verbs-turned-adjectives. Marketing 101, duh!
I LOVE Matsumoto’s!! Best shave ice in Hawai’i! And this has to be the best picture I’ve ever seen of them!
loving the shorts with the long sleeve shirts. lmao. i wonder if the ’shave ice’ will let me live as long as that guy. what is he? 102?
Any man who poses in his boxer shorts with his dad while pouring fruit flavoring over rainbow shaded ice is trying to send a message.
What that message is I have no idea, but it’s definitely a message.
Not Sno-Cones, Shave Ice. With red bean or ice cream!
The older gentleman is quite obviously the sassy one.
That’s what I said! Grandpa’s got spunk.
I LOVE that place! Beans on the bottom!

They are shaved Ice Gods. So in hind sight, good buisness choice.
oh Herro, Enjoy our Shave ice today!

I love Matsumoto’s!!!!
Who knew that Goldschlager makes a good shaved ice topping?
This looks like a 1983 TV Guide cover for a failed CBS sitcom pilot. “Ain’t Misbe-shavin’.” Or something.
I gotta be honest, shave ice just doesn’t do it for me. Hawaii rules though.
Matsumoto’s has the Best Shave Ice in Hawaii.
So cute!
I don’t see how this is an awkward family photo! That is a classic 80’s pic, and those two guys were just cuttin’ it up! tell that guy to put some pants on!
Why are they flavouring that shaved ice with virgin olive oil??…bleccch!
i would pay a boatload to be eating Matsumoto’s shave ice right now!
Oh. My. God. I saw this in my journalism class, and everybody started laughing. I want to meet these people and shake both of their hands.
Tis is TOTALLY now my background for everything.
Make that a banana shave ice with azuki beans and ice cream in the bottom! Matsumoto’s shave ice rocks!!!!
I’ve driven past that place a million times! There’s ALWAYS a line out the door.
yummmm shave ice.
