  1. Brittany says:

    Hell. Yeah.

  2. Letshawkaboutit says:

    is this photo shopped?

  3. Gee says:

Obama and the dog have similar facial expressions, while Lincoln looks awkwardly off to the side… At least he’s got his best foot forward.

  4. El Kev says:

It looks like the dog is thinking “What the **** am I doing here?”

  5. Kristy says:

what kind of face is he making and what’s with the little dog??

  6. Sarah says:

This is… Strange. It’s the dog. The dog makes the whole picture weird. And what’s up with the background? OK. I think that photographers shouldn’t have such a creative license when photographing politicians (re: Sarah Palin’s photo).

  7. Jenny says:

Please! What a sorry excuse for saying you don’t have a political agenda here. The fake picture of Palin was rude to post, especially on July 4th. Plus, it wasn’t a family photo so why was it posted at all?

This site used to be fun.

    • admin says:

Hey Jenny, actually the photo appeared in Runner’s World, so it’s not fake. As far as why it was posted, we often feature awkward solo photos and that one seemed relevant for the 4th. We’re really not interested in getting political– just thought it was an awkward photo just as the above one of Obama is. That’s the beauty of awkwardness… it’s completely bipartisan.

      -afp

      • Jenny says:

The picture of Obama is not awkward, he’s just holding a dog!

Plus, people were bashing Palin for the way the flag was draped and her holding the phones. The magazine most likely set up the photo shoot.

        • admin says:

You’re entitled to your opinion on what’s awkward and yes, I’m sure the magazine did. Just as this pic was set up and many of the family and wedding pics we feature. Doesn’t change the fact that they might or might not be awkward :)

        • Paula says:

Get a grip and get over yourself. Sheesh.

        • Ali says:

The magazine may have set up the photoshoot, but she didn’t have the sense to tell them it might seem disrespectful. As usual.

        • Sam says:

I 100% agree with Jenny. I came here because a link said it was a funny site. Of course a site labeled funny can’t just be that. The Palin picture was neither funny nor relevant except maybe to annoy poeple with the placement of the American flag. And how is that equal to the Obama photo now?

    • Birdie says:

Geeze. Chill out. I guess its funny to you until they make fun of something you seriously believe in. Get a sense of humor.

    • Ani says:

WTF?! It’s a real picture of Palin and the lady is smokin’ fantastic looking in it! What’s there to be angry about?

    • Charlene says:

God, typical extremist. Expects her goddess to be treated 1,000 times better than anyone else or there’s DISCRIMINATION!

Get over yourself and grow up.

      • nikki says:

omg I think almost everything on here is so funny!!! The ones I don’t I just go past!! My boyfriend doesn’t get my obsession with this site so he doesn’t look at it much, bottom line if you don’t think it’s funny just go on with life and go to another site, there are plently of us that do think it’s funny!!

      • Daisy says:

No doubt. God forbid they be treated like a regular citizen!

        • Wastedbeerz says:

I think what a lot of people don’t like about Obama is that he treats himself like just one of the guys, doesn’t try to act like he’s superior or waaay above everyone else on a pedestal. I, for one, like the fact that he acts like that.

Oh, and that dog is HARDCORE. If you show up at someone’s house and THAT is staring you down, you don’t mess with that!!!

  8. pope tyrone XII says:

I think the pic of him smoking is more flattering.

  9. cmf says:

Sorry, but the pic of the prez is in no way as disrespectful as the pic of Palin. There definitely IS a ‘taking sides’ being shown here. But that being said, BOTH pics were a FAIL.

    • Sick and tired says:

I agree completely. Of course the admin has that right, but don’t pretend it isn’t political.

  10. heathermommie says:

Well, this site gets my “vote” for the biggest nosedive ever!
    Note to AFP-
Try sticking to the original theme of the blog or just rename yourselves “Photos”.
I guess you could go for “Lame Photos” just to be fancy.

  11. rebekah says:

why is everyone so angry? Its pretty awesome. Its weird because this is supposed to be a funny site, but it seems like many people who post here have no sense of humor.

  12. maryc says:

first the photo: Awww! Puppy! WT* is up with the backdrop?! Advice–Mr. President, you simply cannot rock the smug look, sorry. You’re just kind of creeping me out. Your puppy, on the other hand, rocks the smug look quite handily.

secondly, comments: jeeze marie, for being such macho strutting tough guys, republicans sure have thin skins. Climb onto your WAHmbulances and have your little breakdowns somewhere they will be appreciated, like the FREEPer site or Townhall or something.

  13. Neal Snow says:

I don’t see the Sarah Palin photo as awkward. She looks good in it. However, this picture of Obama with his pooch in front of the Lincoln Memorial is awkward for many reasons. Makes me even more eager for the next elections to roll around so we can (hopefully) put someone in office who actually is up to the responsibility. Neither McCain or Obama were good choices. No matter how we voted, we were looking forward to four more years of getting screwed.

  14. monkeypants13 says:

Uh, this is not awkward. The dog is Baby, a puppymill rescue. This photo appears in the book “A Rare Breed of Love” by Jana Kohl, and Baby appears in many photos with celebrities.

    • SUIUC says:

Thank you for being the only person who knows who this dog is.

Baby is a puppy mill survivor and Obama pledged to promote adoption, and adopt his first dog, instead of buyind puppies from pet stores where ALL dogs are from puppy mills. Too bad he didn’t keep that promise just like every other one he made while running for office.

      • huminawah? says:

The Obama’s dog “Bo” was a gift from Ted Kennedy. He did not get ‘Bo’ from a puppy mill.

        • Orla says:

No but he didn’t get him from a shelter like he promised he would. He got him from a breeder.

He used his daughters allergies as an excuse for not getting a shelter dog but he knew about that when he promised to get one.

          • Jenn says:

actually he did technically because the kennedy’s got bo from a friend that is a backyard breeder then they didn’t like the dog so it was a hand-me-down to obama. RESCUE ONLY, PEOPLE!

          • Sick and tired says:

            Another broken promise. Go figure.

        • huminawah? says:

A hand-me-down dog sounds like a rescue dog to me.

          • SUIUC says:

            Not at all

And his excuse about allergies is complete BS. There is no such thing as a hypoallergenic dog. People are allergic to dander on dogs and their dog just doesn’t shed…

          • @janejax says:

And if he ad refused the dog Bo which was a gift from Ted Kennedy, the same folks complaining about “broken promises” would say he disrespected an elder statesman. No winning with these folks.

          • djinn says:

The Obamas got Bo the same we we got our younger Basset hound .. someone got him from a breeder and then decided, for whatever reason, they didn’t want him anymore. Our dog is a rescue, and so is Bo Obama. They were both unwanted dogs who found loving homes. What’s not to get?

  15. m4rk0 says:

A lot of very angry people out there. Take a chill pill.

    • Sick and tired says:

A lot of people are broke, being taxed to death and tired of broken promises. That tends to generate a lot of anger.

Please leave politics out of this otherwise funny and wonderful blog.

  16. KT says:

Lol, seems like a couple of people here have been taking some PMS pills…and not to cure it, either.

The only thing I found awkward about this was that it wasn’t Bo, the family dog. I wonder if Bo would be jealous of the pup in this picture.

  17. BroadwayBohemia says:

What’s weird is that even though he lives in DC, they still bluescreened a backdrop of the Lincoln Memorial in.

    IT’S A TEN MINUTE DRIVE!

    Weird.

    • Amy K says:

I think this pic was taken BEFORE he lived in DC… possible explanation

    • DOGSAREPAWSOME says:

Or maybe it’s because that is such a hot tourist spot that it would be an inconvenience and very $$$$$ to secure the area?

  18. MODOG says:

HA! Both political pics are awkard to say the least. Its great how both photos, Palin and Obama are both using pieces of Americana as PROPS! She is using the flag a a prop and he is using the Lincoln Monument as a back drop. Both pics spew “See, look how American we are!”

  19. patkerash says:

YAH Iran, me and my puppy are gonna kick your butts, yah, so there, we’re gonna bring it to ya…ha ha ha so there………………..why is my arm wet ?

  20. Ali says:

Not that awkward, but very, very cute. The dog, I mean. Obama and Lincoln are both looking like GQ bada**es.

  21. Jenany says:

I agree with the aforementioned suggestion of staying true to the original AFP premise of the blog — no matter how benign pics of political figures may actually be, they obviously have the ability to spark a lot of debate. Please stick to pics of the “regular” folks .. ones we DON’T know are ones we can relate to, imho. :-)

  22. Susan says:

As this is a private blog, surely the owners can publish whatever they like? As a Canadian, I appreciate the humour of both Sarah Palin’s photo and Obama’s. The latter confused me until the “wrong dog” explanation was given. And you’re wrong about the smug look. Obama, whom I really like, totally rocks the smug look. He’s cool, you guys, you’re lucky to have him. Palin is a pretty woman, she sure is fit. Look at the legs! Take it easy everyone. Hey, post some Canadian awkwardness! That’ll distract everyone.

    • doggiekittymama says:

Oh I wish Americans could be more laid back and calm like you. I avoid political sites but you can’t escape the silly noise even here. The pictures were a funny 4th of July idea. A sense of humor is really needed in these times. And there are no purebred Portugese Water dogs to adopt-my dog groomer raises them. They found a dog that needed a home. Informal rescues like that happen frequently-three of the six dogs we have owned came to us through friends of family and friends. The Obama’s dog got a great life-it’s a win/win.

    • Family Man says:

      Isn’t “Canadian awkwardness” redundant? ;-)

    • Laurie says:

      Canada…America’s hat!

  23. DOGSAREPAWSOME says:

    HOW…

    BARACKWARD!

  24. Anon says:

Chill folks! I voted and feel very strongly about my political views, but I still thought that both pictures were very funny, timely for the fourth and awkward. Keep up the good work AFP.com!

    • Orla says:

Same. I have very strong political opinions but both pictures are awkward and isn’t that the point of this entire blog?

  25. 2ndAmendChick says:

LMAO @ Teflon93 that was awesome and I think the admin is so right, this is a very awkward photo…like who’s dog is that, and why is he standing in front of Lincoln’s statue? Weird photo. Jenny needs to relax, because I’m betting that even Obama looked at this one and wondered why he agreed to this photo…lol. I think this is a very fun photo.

  26. ManTooBigForBoat says:

Agree with Jenany. No more posed celebrities please. Nobodies are so much funnier. Otherwise people are reacting to WHO it is, rather than the armshelf, the totally wrong pantsuit, the freakishly identical hairdo, which is what we all come here for.

  27. Anastasia says:

As a few people said, this dog is Baby. Her owner rescued her when she was near death from a puppy mill. She had been made to have numerous litters and was, like I said, a breath away from death due to extreme neglect. In fact, she’s missing one of her front legs, it had to be amputated due to infection. It’s the one that would be up against Obama’s chest, but isn’t there. Her vocal cords had been cut to keep her from barking and there’s a number tattooed inside her ear.

This was taken long before he was elected as part of a public awareness campaign about puppy mills. Baby has had her picture taken with other public figures besides Obama. Just google A Rare Breed of Love.

I doubt he’s trying to look smug. Why would he look smug when posing with a dog that barely survived a nine year ordeal in a puppy mill?

  28. Penny says:

Wow, you Americans just need to chill.

I agree with whoever said that Baby and Prez O. have the same look on their faces.

  29. Grandma Wannabe says:

This is totally shooped. Unlike the Palin photo, which is not.

Also, where is his compound bow?

  30. T says:

The picture of him standing in front of Superman in the Superman pose would have been more awkward, IMHO.

  31. Tiara says:

This is a website on the internet. If you dont like whats posted by all means, click the “x” in the corner and go somewhere else. Whining in the comment section is pointless and makes you seem…um…awkward.

  32. Jen says:

Wow. This is the first time I’ve read the comments on this site, and it will surely be the last. Ugliness abounds here, not from the photos, but from some site users. Anonymity breeds poor manners.

    • Tiara says:

      And Keyboard courage

    • Shadow says:

Actually, it’s not normally this bad. I read the comments of various photos pretty often… but I’ve never seen comments like this. I think it’s just that AFP accidentally hit a touchy spot with a lot of people when delving into political photos… or something. A lot of times, the comments are funnier than the photos… you just got unlucky with your first.

      Also, interesting photo.

    • Penny says:

Jen, hang in there. This is a first, usually the comments are more than hilarious.

      Gotta love politics.

  33. Cian says:

    Obama: world’s biggest poser

  34. Parker says:

Geez! Glad I’m a “foreigner” and can take a look at these pictures with a neutral eye. And HELL YEAH, both the Palin and Obama pics are awkward!

They are way too posed, and have cheesy props (yes, a dog qualifies as a prop, too). The photographer has been going wild with the background filter in the Obama pic, add to that the super-soft lighting, the ridiculously fluffy dog and this picture would have been fit for a Little Miss USA pageant, but not an adult man. And he knows it!

And the Palin pic is just as awkward! Just look at her – that is not a natural pose, so she probably wasn’t the one who came up with it. And the abundance of props tells me that the photographer of this picture sucked, so of course she wouldn’t be comfortable around her/him. Classic makings of an awkward solo picture.

I think that those who accuse AFP of taking sides are just doing that themselves. Having no emotional investment in either Palin or Obama, I found both of these pictures equally hilarious – err, awkward.

    • Leghound says:

Most of these arguments sound like Dr Laura blaming the guy who took the pics and the
publishers. If you pose for it answer to it.Just like a foreigner to introduce intelligence
and common sense into a topic. Thanks a million for a fair POV.

  35. Jill says:

what Parker said! – “I think that those who accuse AFP of taking sides are just doing that themselves.”

Were some of you people just looking for a chance to fight politics? On one of the funniest sites? Where you’re obviously lucky to even be allowed to post?

Please, call each other names & get your feelings hurt & make jerks of yourselves over these 2 photos. Show your true colors, act like real pigs :p

  36. mebinger says:

I think an awkward family fourth picnic pic would have made its mark in a better way. Obviously, there’s alot of sensitive people in the crowd.

  37. Glenn S. says:

“Recession is when your neighbor loses his job.
Depression is when you lose yours.
And recovery is when Obama loses his.”

  38. Izzy says:

Check out the nice even glow above his left shoulder (to our right).

If you (as a *professional* photographer) are going to photoshop your subject into a national monument, at least hire a professional artist to do the photoshopping.

  39. Phil W. says:

Ask not what your Poodle can do for you…

  40. pope tyrone XII says:

Both pics are awkward. This is coming from someone who is quite anti-Obama.

  41. What in the World? says:

This is a really weird photo.

Maybe not as awkward as b.o. messing up the oath of office, b.o. forgetting how many states are in the UNITED STATES of America, or of saying to a group of veterans, ‘As I look out across the crowd and see our fallen soldiers…’ — Now THOSE were awkward! LoL

  42. GUIDO says:

Pathetic….get him away from this site ASAP….

  43. todd says:

this would be generally awkward, in any circumstance……

  44. David says:

Wow…what better way to pay homage to he man who abolished slavery than to take a picture with your poodle in front of it. Oh wait…I’m sorry…. “Portugese water dog”

    • Mark says:

Yes, this photo is strange. I think Obama needs to check the papers on that dog. That is the foo foofiest Portugese water dog I have ever seen. This is almost as bad as holding a cat. I’d like to see my president with a dog a little more bad a** than Fi Fi.

  45. kangariveroo says:

calm down everyone. he’s just going to a dinner at the BYOLWD house. rememba’ them?

  46. Forgiven says:

    All is forgiven.

  47. Gomer says:

Wow. Less than a year into his term and he is posing for photos in front an icon like Lincoln. And we thought posing in front of that “mission accomplished” banner was presumptuous.

    • MichelettiForYou says:

That photo is around a year old. There’s nothing wrong with your president, if you had somebody like Berlusconi, Calderon or even Sarkozy then maybe the situation would be different but the truth is the US.A. has been on the road to bankruptcy since the 70’s when banks didn’t want gold to continue backing them up, so you have been living in a vicious circle of debts and printing money, how come you didn’t complain back then?, did you seriously think it was going to last forever? No need to be bitter now, you’re just going to be living like most people in the world anyway.

  48. magillicuddy says:

just goes to show you… never make promises to kids about getting pets…look what you get into…

  49. yahoo says:

The back lighting on BO is good effect, he must be an angel.

  50. Tim says:

There’s just WAAAY too many jokes for this one to list!
