Bullseye

All those hopes and dreams of him becoming a doctor just don’t seem important anymore.

The Van Helsing family: the early years.
HAHAHA
Shot through the heart, and you’re to blame.
BWAHAHAHAHA. Perfect.
The kid has earned his Arrow of Light. Not that awkward……..
My sentiments exactly. It’s a big deal to a scout.
I was just coming here to say that. Thanks for beating me to it. I agree, commendable, not awkward.
I agree; the Arrow of Light is a big deal, and one of the last things a boy earns before he crosses over to Boy Scouts.
It is the arrow of light…good job kid…NOT AWKWARD at all!
Good Job, Kid! Awkward Job, AFP.
Yeah, not an awkward picture at all, and quite a proud moment for this kid.
Shame on you for thinking this was an awkward moment!! An Order of the Arrow is certainly a big deal as the the only award higher will be when he completes his Eagle Scout project and becomes an Eagle Scout. Way to go young man, and yes he just may become the doctor as referred to in the picture’s caption.
I was going to comment on the Arrow of Light, but thought I’d check for one already posted.. I agree not awkward, until someone commented on the compound bow with it, that was funny..
Kudos to you kid, you worked hard for that arrow of light!
Indeed!
I’d be willing to be it’s the Arrow of Light Ceremony, when one graduates from Webelos (Cub Scouting) to Boy Scouts.
what he really needs now is The Compound Bow
I think you can earn a merit badge for compound bow construction
Just the presence of an arrow had me laughing and shaking my head.
Is that a school flag on the right side of the mantle?
Phrew! Glad we got that over with!
There’s a whole other ceremony for that…………….!
finally! what we get to comment 5 and no-one makes a compound bow joke with this picture??? pick it up a little people, pick it up! however, i do appreciate the van helsing comment was first. nicely done neverfirst, nicely done.
I was wondering how long it would take before the Compound Bow joke was thrown in.
FTW
Knew it was coming!
THanks for getting the compound bow joke out of the way….. now all we gotta do is figure out a clever way to fit a regulation size casserole dish joke and this comment section is complete!
I thnk everybody who completes their arrow of light has a picture showing their pride of the achievement… Not even a little awkward.
Yeah that is the Arrow of Light. It is not an archery award. It is one of the highest award a Cub Scout can earn and is quite an accomplishment for the young fellow. If anything it should be a sign that his hopes and dreams of becoming a Doctor might become a reality, because he must be a smart and dedicated kid to get it. Bravo, lad!
Agree with the above. Scouting isn’t that awkward or geeky and that is the Arrow of Light award which, IIRC, doesn’t have to do with archery. Awkward Fail.
I think the little shmoo thing on the fireplace mantle is scary. Good thing it’s captured in a glass case – wouldn’t want it to get out. Other than that the pic seems fairly ordinary though it shouldn’t hurt dad to crack a smile…
am i missing something here… all the Arrow of light is correct… a high honor for a boy that age… i keep looking for the awkward.
or is this just a set up for the compound bow guys
It’s the Arrow of Light badge. He’s also wearing the pin, which is the dark-colored, rectangular one directly below the circular patch on his shirt. As I recall, it’s the only scouting decoration that you can wear for your entire scouting career, up through Eagle and scoutmaster and all that. I was proud when I got mine too (in about 1983); good job, kid.
This one’s pretty tame comparatively — us Boy Scout parents know the drill with the Arrow of Light ceremony.
Wow another compound bow joke…didn’t see that one coming
Not awkward at all…this is a Boy Scout.
We at the Wings of Love dating service believe in keeping our Cupid agents motivated to always do their best.
I guess I’m missing the “awkward” part of this.
Is it me, or is that the smallest mantelpiece in existence?
That arrow’s gotta go on the wall friends. No more room on that mantelpiece, for sure…
Shoot that poison arrow through my HEAAAART…!
Yeah… I’m not seeing the awkwardness of this one, pretty much every boy scout that has graduated out of cub scouts has a pic just like this one.. however, I sense that is posted primarily to be a cross bow joke conductor.
this isn’t awkward at all… we need more faceplants. no… DEMAND more faceplants…
Aww! I think this one is cute! The caption, on the other hand, is just darn funny.
Father is so proud.
As others have mentioned, that is an Arrow of Light, the highest award in Cub Scouting (so it’s sort of the junior Eagle Scout). It is something to be proud of, and this photo isn’t any more awkward than one with any ten-year-old American boy. (Which is pretty awkward, I’ll admit.)
There is nothing awkward about this photograph. This young man, with the help of his parents, acheived the highest recognition in Cub Scouting, and is the only badge a Cub Scout can take with him into Boy Scouts. Smart a** comments about compound bows and Van Helsing betray the level of ignorance of the acheivement this young man has accomplished. Frankly, this site should take down this photo.
AGREE, AGREE, AGREE..does not belong on any site that would call this awkward! …we need more PARENTS like this who can guide their children to bigger and better things…they will be our next doctors, lawyers, presidents….
Get a sense of humor!
It’s just a scouting milestone. And FYI: all parent/child photos with a scouting involved will be a little awkward. There’s nothing special about this photo.
This is the first one that I just didn’t get. Awkward Fail.
It’s going to be awkward to pin that on his uniform. My Webelos pin was MUCH smaller.
lol.. THAT was funny
Arrow of Light… really not that strange.
This is the Order of the Arrow, moving from Webelos to Boy Scouts. I fail to see the awkwardness.
Order of the Arrow and Arrow of Light are two different things.
Oops. Sorry. Should have read further. Mea Culpa.
No, wait, Arrow of Light.
I see nothing awkward about this photo. It’s a boy who has earned an award with his parents…where’s the awkward????
Tjat was the arrow he recreated the story of William Tell with his little sister. Unfortunatly the sister couldn’t make the photo.
It’s the Arrow of Light! All of my brothers have those. The most awkward part about those ceremonies are doing the cheers…
By far the least awkward photo on the site.
I think he needs to be fixed up with one of the van Helsing girls… now THAT’S a match made in heaven!
It’s the Arrow of Light for Cub Scouting… not awkward at all except for the awkward-looking people.
Just because I feel like a jerk today: but oh no, here come the “compound bow” jokes… Maybe they were -kind of- funny 592 posts ago, but c’mon… enough!
I especially enjoy the flags that are supposed to go on your car nicely accenting the mantle.
The mother looks like a woman who goes to my church…but that doesn’t look like her husband or kid. Aside from that, I don’t see anything awkward about this one. Just two proud parents and their proud son.
I agree Michael
“Today I am a man!”
I don’t find anything awkward about this one either.
If mom or dad were groping him, or he was checking mom out, yes, but this is your standard picture.
OK, how is this awkward? The kid got his Arrow of Light. I’m sure there are plenty of Boy Scouts that became doctors. Pick a different picture.
What’s awkward about this photo? If it is the Arrow of Light, then it’s something for him to be proud of as he works towards his Eagle Scout.
I’m with Lil J and Michael….I don’t see anything awkward about it. Then again, I’m married to an Eagle Scout, with 2 more for BIL’s.
I don’t really see what’s awkward here…
thats cool…my lil cousin gets that arrow soon. Boy scouts is great for kids…my Uncles a pack leader i guess its called.
this post will eventually be overflown with Compund Bow/van helsing references.
Yeah, that set-up was entirely too easy!
What’s really awkward are all the comments saying that this isn’t awkward.
the dvd’s crammed into the shelf adds a nice touch.
Boy Scouts are cool. . . only thing awkward here is the fact so many of us don’t get why this is awkward!
I wish the Girl Scouts were half as cool as Boy Scouts. . .
Arrow of light is a big accomplishment for a Cub scout, my son received his too. Not very awkward.
