Having dated many chicks like the one in the back when I was in HS,
we would have referred to the girl in the back as “New Wave” and the girl
in the front as “Punk”. The New Wave chicks weren’t as hard as the Punk
chicks and still wore somewhat popular clothes (no leather or spikes).

Watch the movie SLC Punk if you need further instruction on the differences…

Wow, Mr. Semantics is here to set us all straight! I forgot he’s also an expert in punk/new wave culture…thanks for the lesson, oh worldy one. I would contend though that the girl in the back has shaved sides, not just slicked back or styled, therefore qualifying her as whatever she and her friend wanted to be called.

      I love the picture!

  2. StrictTime says:

I think everyone involved in this portrait is awesome, not awkward. Those girls really knew how to rock a look– did it with real style. Love Love Love

  3. glasstabletop says:

    wow, make-up certainly does wonders.

my mom was so pissd that we showed up looking like this for our family photos. like she didn’t notice until just then what i looked like..lol. and yes, i am a girl. who used to have a big black mohawk.lol! and thats my best friend, not my sister.

  5. D says:

    lol the mom looks frightened

  6. hellkitty says:

At least the “new wave” girl in the back tried to comply with Mom’s “Wear a pink sweater for the family photo” request . . .

  7. hellkitty says:

At least one of the kids tried to comply with mom’s “wear a pink sweater for our family photo” request . . .

  8. mcr says:

    hahahahahahahahahha

  9. Marian says:

Now that’s the kind of family I’d like to chill with…nothing awkward about it.

  10. cmfiowa says:

And I run….I run so far, far away in a distant galaxy…..

  11. The Anti Boop says:

    wow…that’s the best!

  12. Marcia says:

The intensity of the gaze of the girl with the black mowhawk is what’s cracking me up. And the fake widow’s peak she drew in on her forehead. I literally laughed until I cried. I hope I’m this understanding when my kids start experimenting with their “looks”.

  13. S_Rose says:

J.W., how old are you in this photo? Your bf is the perfect transitional person between you and your mom, like on an Evolutionary scale between conservative and punk! She looks a bit like you both, too! This is a fabulous photo! :)

  14. ggAlien says:

The one in the back is SMOKIN HOT!!!

  15. ko_y says:

    要是在中国这叫做非主流~哈哈~

  16. MissDroog71 says:

Those girls are gorgeous. I wish I had more shots of myself from ‘back in the day’. Brilliant.

  17. Collin says:

I think it’s pretty great that the mom managed to pull off this portrait with the girls and achieved a merely amusing pose, not too pissed off to show up. Proves she has the ability to let her offspring express themselves. Truly a snapshot of the times. Thankfully we all move on!

  18. jennyann says:

I was 13 in this shot. I thought I was the hottest sh** to walk the earth…lol. :)

I swear you look just like a younger version of the girl now on LA Ink. I love that your Mom took this picture. She must be a great person.

  19. RS says:

This is a pefect family portrait. No joke.

  20. Michelle says:

I wish I could do that with my makeup! I could never rock that as good as you girls do/did!

  21. kush says:

you’re just great!!! love that photo! and the one in the background is pretty attractive :)

  22. Sorcha says:

Jennyann, you rock. This is how I wanted to look in high school but my mom was a lot stricter about that sort of thing. This photo is awesome, not at all awkward.

  23. graphicartist2k5 says:

what the hell universe is this from? the universe where the 80’s never dies?

  24. Fred Jones says:

Never tell your kids they can wear whatever they want in the family portrait. You WILL be sorry.

    • Sorcha says:

I wouldn’t be. Long as it’s clean and doesn’t show his naughty bits, my kid can wear what he wants for his pictures.

  25. Krissie says:

What a proud moment for this Mom, I know my heart would have been bursting with pride!

  26. Jess says:

Better watch yourself Romulans! Willliam Shatner might send these ladies after you!

  27. DMM-K says:

So now we know the inspiration for Kate Gosslein’s hair-do.

  28. Lisa says:

Mom looks so proud! Or frightened!

  29. Pearlellen says:

hahaha this is so bad ass, after seeing this i want to round up some street punks and make them take a in space family photo

  30. ErickB says:

As this is obvious a picture from the 80’s would love to see what the girls look like now in comparison.

  31. Bill says:

Lol. I’m a 68 year old man and I love how these girls look. I think it’s kinda sexy. They’re both beautiful if you’ll look beyond the way they look.

    • Anne says:

“They’re both beautiful if you’ll look beyond the way they look.”

I know what you meant but the way it came out is hilarious.

  32. mr. happy says:

LOL You can her the girl in pink thinking, “Why me?”

  33. Nightowl says:

I’m thinking this wasn’t taken in the ’80’s. I don’t think GBH was around then, were they???

  34. F'Yeah says:

    Hot…

  35. HyphyTime says:

    Falconnnnn punch!

  36. Christian says:

  37. Those girls will grow up to crunchy, uptight, businesswomen

  38. they really are looking out of this world… the rosary beads is looking good, i just love jewelry beads…

  39. Antony Reklaw says:

Both girls have great looks! Awkward? Not in my book.

  40. Antony Reklaw says:

Both girls have great looks! Awkward? Not as far as I’m concerned.

  41. Gob Smacked says:

Jenny Ann, you have the coolest mother ever. Ever!

  42. Elsa says:

I respect this mother so so much. Awesome that she captured a second in this families time… exactly. Hope it’s hanging on their living room wall!

  43. Katina says:

We don’t have anything this my high school. I’m actually the girl at school with my whole head shaved wearing wigs. (I don’t have the courage yet to show up with a wig yet, I plan it my senior year). I have female pattern baldness, the reason to shaving all my hair off.
But yeah, my dad used to be so pissed off at me when I came over to family reunions with pink or blue hair.
Now I see girls with just red, long hair…so boring. Also emo/scene hair -_-
I’m more interested about you and your friend shaving your eyebrows off. Wait, are they?

  44. skybolt says:

    + sigh +
I wish I still had hair

  45. Slick says:

Ooops, that was “to say”, but it went off the page and I couldn’t see it.
And now I can’t edit it. *sigh*
It’s never as funny if you have to do it this way.

  46. SK says:

    How can you tell?

  47. Slick says:

    They’re girls. Both of them.
