Having dated many chicks like the one in the back when I was in HS,
we would have referred to the girl in the back as “New Wave” and the girl
in the front as “Punk”. The New Wave chicks weren’t as hard as the Punk
chicks and still wore somewhat popular clothes (no leather or spikes).
Watch the movie SLC Punk if you need further instruction on the differences…
Wow, Mr. Semantics is here to set us all straight! I forgot he’s also an expert in punk/new wave culture…thanks for the lesson, oh worldy one. I would contend though that the girl in the back has shaved sides, not just slicked back or styled, therefore qualifying her as whatever she and her friend wanted to be called.
I love the picture!
LM*O LM*O…Glenlivet12 you are funny!
I think everyone involved in this portrait is awesome, not awkward. Those girls really knew how to rock a look– did it with real style. Love Love Love
wow, make-up certainly does wonders.
my mom was so pissd that we showed up looking like this for our family photos. like she didn’t notice until just then what i looked like..lol. and yes, i am a girl. who used to have a big black mohawk.lol! and thats my best friend, not my sister.
so, still rockin the mohawk?
no mohawk for many years
Adorable!
This is great and your friend kind of looks like Christina Applegate?!?!
That’s what I thought as soon as I saw that girl!
That is so funny your mom looks like she is trying not be pissed.
Hold hands on one side. Clench fists on the other.
that’s what I was thinking! … a half-hearted smile to mask the shock and frustration
Dude. That picture is the best. Seriously. Pity you’re not still rockin the look. Peace
I think you guys look great. You rocked that look and never looked back.
i love the photo- both you girls look great and i commend your mom for still going through with it! i had to deal with the slings & arrows of my folks and family (except my grandma, she thought i looked great, but then again she used to be a flapper) till well into my thirties, when they finally realized it wasn’t a “phase”.
Call me old-fashioned, but I am just relieved to know that is a girl in the front!!! I was getting a lil weirded out thinking that was the son!!! LOL
Your friend is damn cute.
♥♥Tank girl hair.
Jennyann, this look came out many, many years after I was out of school, or, I swear to you, it’s a look I would have adopted myself!
Rock on!
lol the mom looks frightened
At least the “new wave” girl in the back tried to comply with Mom’s “Wear a pink sweater for the family photo” request . . .
At least one of the kids tried to comply with mom’s “wear a pink sweater for our family photo” request . . .
Kudos to mom for embracing these two girls.
hahahahahahahahahha
Now that’s the kind of family I’d like to chill with…nothing awkward about it.
I agree 100% with you Marion. I love the look.
And I run….I run so far, far away in a distant galaxy…..
wow…that’s the best!
The intensity of the gaze of the girl with the black mowhawk is what’s cracking me up. And the fake widow’s peak she drew in on her forehead. I literally laughed until I cried. I hope I’m this understanding when my kids start experimenting with their “looks”.
yes Spaceballs for a family photo totally rocks!
J.W., how old are you in this photo? Your bf is the perfect transitional person between you and your mom, like on an Evolutionary scale between conservative and punk! She looks a bit like you both, too! This is a fabulous photo!
The one in the back is SMOKIN HOT!!!
要是在中国这叫做非主流~哈哈~
Those girls are gorgeous. I wish I had more shots of myself from ‘back in the day’. Brilliant.
I think it’s pretty great that the mom managed to pull off this portrait with the girls and achieved a merely amusing pose, not too pissed off to show up. Proves she has the ability to let her offspring express themselves. Truly a snapshot of the times. Thankfully we all move on!
Ain’t that the truth! Kudos to that mom!
I was 13 in this shot. I thought I was the hottest sh** to walk the earth…lol.
JennyAnn
I swear you look just like a younger version of the girl now on LA Ink. I love that your Mom took this picture. She must be a great person.
This is a pefect family portrait. No joke.
I wish I could do that with my makeup! I could never rock that as good as you girls do/did!
you’re just great!!! love that photo! and the one in the background is pretty attractive
Jennyann, you rock. This is how I wanted to look in high school but my mom was a lot stricter about that sort of thing. This photo is awesome, not at all awkward.
what the hell universe is this from? the universe where the 80’s never dies?
Er, I’m pretty sure it’s from the actual 80s, or thereabouts.
New Jersey.
Long Live the ‘80! I miss those years.
Never tell your kids they can wear whatever they want in the family portrait. You WILL be sorry.
I wouldn’t be. Long as it’s clean and doesn’t show his naughty bits, my kid can wear what he wants for his pictures.
What a proud moment for this Mom, I know my heart would have been bursting with pride!
Better watch yourself Romulans! Willliam Shatner might send these ladies after you!
So now we know the inspiration for Kate Gosslein’s hair-do.
Mom looks so proud! Or frightened!
hahaha this is so bad ass, after seeing this i want to round up some street punks and make them take a in space family photo
As this is obvious a picture from the 80’s would love to see what the girls look like now in comparison.
Lol. I’m a 68 year old man and I love how these girls look. I think it’s kinda sexy. They’re both beautiful if you’ll look beyond the way they look.
“They’re both beautiful if you’ll look beyond the way they look.”
I know what you meant but the way it came out is hilarious.
LOL You can her the girl in pink thinking, “Why me?”
I’m thinking this wasn’t taken in the ’80’s. I don’t think GBH was around then, were they???
yeah, gbh started in 78, and theyre actually still touring!! i saw them a couple years ago! =]
Hot…
Falconnnnn punch!
Love it..is this around 86-87 man it takes me back..Rock On
Those girls will grow up to crunchy, uptight, businesswomen
they really are looking out of this world… the rosary beads is looking good, i just love jewelry beads…
Both girls have great looks! Awkward? Not in my book.
Both girls have great looks! Awkward? Not as far as I’m concerned.
That’s a chick.
Ooops, that was “to say”, but it went off the page and I couldn’t see it.
And now I can’t edit it. *sigh*
It’s never as funny if you have to do it this way.
How can you tell?
They’re girls. Both of them.
