This photo. All these pics on AFP crack me up, but this one I actually clicked-on. It just grabbed my attention. I love how it went from American Apparel to “I thought it was me” to thinking that I really like this photo for 2010 toooooo …what’s that white thing?
Oh wow…I’ve been dancing for 17 years (14 of them as a kid, 3 as an adult), and even in my most awkward years, none of my photos looked nearly this bad, but that may have been because it was the 90s by that time and my mom used to practically rip my glasses off my face before my recital photos were taken. For some reason, she thought it was funny to make me take them off before I could find the studio where the individual photos were being taken so I could move around blindly…for shame mom!
But wow, she’s got some awesome Jazz hands…my male Hip Hop teacher likes to tell us to use “Jazz Hands” alot…perhaps she inspired him? LOL!!
I can’t believe I had to read through SO many comments to finally read one about this … totally the most noticeably awkward part about the photo everyone!!
I cant beleive how many comments about pads i had to read through. anyone who has done tap or ballet dance will know its a part of the stockings, often people dont wear undies when wearing stockings to theres a little light coloured piece of cotton sewen in. when i did competition aerobics it used to sneak out all the time. its not a pad guys, use your brain. if you look closely you will see its circular, not rectangular
I had to read the comments JUST so I could see if someone else noticed this–I was definitely going to say something if not. It DOES look like her pad slipped!
As a photographer who’s done many photos like this I can tell you that it’s not unthinkable to miss this as we’re so trained to focus on the face and the hands. Also I would hate to tell a 10-11 year old girl, “Your um pantyhose needs to be adjusted.”
The glasses really aren’t her fault at all. In the 80s we had such a fewer selection than today. We were happy when they added color to the frames. Also look up “headgear”. Man, the 80s were a great time but in some ways – we were just screwed on looking “cool”.
Boy howdy, I need to send in some of my old ballet pictures. I was as gangly and freakish as any of these kids. My torso took two years to catch up to my suddenly freakishly long arms and legs, so I looked like a praying mantis for awhile there.
And yeah, had those glasses, too. I feel her pain. Though, it sounds as though she’s in no pain at all now, bless her pea-pickin’ heart!
God help me but this is exactly how I looked at that age. The enormous two-tone glasses, the permed hair, and the jazz outfit. I was in dance classes and recital time was the one time per year that I could get all painted in the face with mom’s blue shadow. Rock on, sister!
The glasses may be what were called Cosmetones (spelling?)–they were advertized as being tinted one color at the top and another at the bottom, so you had instant eye shadow and blush.

Nah, that’s normal on lots of tights. it’s kinda like a reinforced liner sewn right in. I always hated that about tights when I used to take ballet long long ago.

Its more likely to be a tear in the tights. If it was a pad it be under the tights and less noticeable because of the colour of the tights over it.
