Olan Mills is a treasure trove of 80s awkwardness

  2. Marissa says:

    legendary hot

  3. Iloveskateman says:

The funniest part of all is his expression like … “Oh yeah, now you KNOW you WANT me!”

  4. binkymae says:

Perhaps it is from the Olan Mills training manual in the section on selecting background color. Under the tab “Don’t make this common mistake”.

  5. PS says:

I wear my pants way up high!
I wear my pants way up high!
    I’m telling YOOOOOOU, girl,
I wear my pants way up high! yeah!

  6. feelinz says:

This guy reminds me of that old comedian, Gallagher. All he needs ia mustach and a sledge o’ matic.

  7. Angie says:

He really should have worn grey roller skates. Tis a shame to ruin such a carefully selected outfit.

  8. KP says:

I REALLY REALLY love this one!

  9. Kate says:

This dude aspired to be an extra in either Skatetown, USA or Roller Boogie.

  10. Queen of the World says:

Is dude wearing a UNITARD? Is that even legal?

  11. db says:

    What.

    The.

    Hell?

  12. Sandy says:

I like the semi-action pose. Watch out he’s gonna get you! :O

  13. Tim says:

So…where’s the subject? All I see is a grey wall with one of those “Have A Nice Day” stickers on it!

  14. tyler says:

Its like a car crash, u dont want to look but u cant turn away.

  15. Damien says:

He seems very excited to be having his picture taken.

  16. Carrie says:

The background of this photo is strangely reminiscent of “Watchman”. Stunning.

  17. Gail says:

Oh.my.God. This is my cousin! I am not lying. He was really into roller skating when younger (he’s in his early 50s now) and to my knowledge still lives with his mother. Not sayin anymore, and I’m not really in touch with them, but yeah, this is totally the kind of picture he would have had made – probably one sitting on a shelf somewhere around the house.

Who is the Jay that submitted this? My husband’s name is Jay and I have a son named Jay but I know they would not have this picture. Just curious if you know my family?? LOL

    • Anonymous says:

Well, Gail, you must be proud! :D

    • nite owl says:

Gail, what are the odds that your son and husband are named Jay and this is submitted by someone named Jay? Me thinks one of them found this somehow…

      • Gail says:

No, I don’t think there is any way it was them. We have not had any contact with that side of my family in years, In fact my husband has only seen this cousin once, at my dad’s funeral, and my son has maybe met him two or three times. They are the branch of the fanily that we never ever see. And I’ve never seen this photo, I just know he used to roller skate because my dad told me (his sister is this guy’s mother) and I recognized him. And yes it’s pretty freaky to find a relative on here, but it shows me these are legitimate pictures. I wish whoever posted it would tell me how they know my cousin. I’m not mad, I think it’s hilarious, I’m just curious. I don’t want to say his name on here or what town he lives in, but this Jay has to be a friend or boyfriend (yes that’s what I mean) or something. It is just hilarious to me.

How awkward is it to look at AFP for a good laugh and discover a picture of your own family member?!

  18. CCCC says:

This is my favorite AFP of all time!

  19. jnmcnally says:

    Oh my.

  20. Rebekah says:

…And so Secret Agent Man candidate 247 fails the “incognito” test!

  21. m says:

“this gorgeous outfit really complements any lovely figure. and if you act today, we will throw in a free pair of roller skates, so you can get on your way and Burn That Mutha Down this weekend.”

  22. Mark says:

This actually makes me uncomfortable. Good job AFP!

  23. robyn says:

    Ok…..why?

  24. Penny says:

Something about this photo – I have to keep looking but when I do I just have to look away. Not sure whether to laugh or cry. I think I am blushing for him.

Where are you now gray 70′s rollerskate guy? Are you able to speak for yourself and explain this photo in greater depths than, “it was the 70′s”?

  25. melissa says:

    Dad, is that you?

  26. Amberosia says:

It looks to me like he’s wearing a jumpsuit and this is his, “Someday I will be a professional roller skater” picture.
I’ve got $5 that says he was an assistant manager at Skateworld.

  27. judy says:

I am just wondering why someone would go and get their picture taken all by himself like this?
A modeling shot? no. Gifts for relatives? I hope not. For his living room? Just maybe.

The phographer must have giggled a bit when he realized that nobody else was coming for the session. As a photographer, that would be awkward.

  28. Paul says:

    Brian Boitano Senior?

  29. Loladeville says:

The most stylin’ man on the planet!!!

  30. Fred says:

So this guy paid to have this photo taken. Then went through all of the proofs and chose this one. Then paid for (I’m assuming) several copies of said photo. Then what? Gave them to people he knew? Thought his Grandmother would carry around a copy in her wallet to show off at her next Bridge Club meeting? Did he post the 8×10 on the living room wall?

Ayyy, it’s things like this that make me never want to have my picture taken.

  31. JESS & MATT says:

    #1 All Time hilarious awkwardness

  32. Laurie says:

Sweet cracker sandwich! WHY?? WHY?? WHY??

  33. Awkward Turtle says:

I wonder what that is on his hand. A magic mood ring, perhaps? Or maybe it’s his skate key. :o )

  34. No one’s said yet? I’m shocked…

    LOLLERSKATES!

  35. Denise says:

This is an enigma – it baffles understanding and cannot be explained. My brain is mush now.

  36. msumissa says:

So, in the next pose is he “shooting the duck”??

  37. Jennifer says:

Hall of Fame for sho. Is there a sister website for photographers to explain their strangest requests? Did no one try to talk him outta the grey backdrop? Good grief- anything else would have been better. Stars, paint splatters, split rail fence and barn…

Bet he’s a helluva skater though.

    • butcherbaby says:

“anything else would have been better. Stars, paint splatters, split rail fence and barn…”

badly painted Eiffel towers, folding chairs, compound bows, 2 dimensional wedding, gigantic translucent baby heads……

  38. BPG says:

This will cause nightmares. Oh why do the 70s keep haunting me!

  39. XLscooper says:

He almost got by the huge gray wall when his cloaking device began to fail.

  40. Ken says:

I think this was supposed to be the futuristic look back in the day (’70s ?). That is, if everyone was going to wear bland clothing and roller skates. BUT I think this was as uncomfortably numb then as it is now. Awkward too, obviously.

  41. Maureen says:

The first Awkward Family Photo Hall of Fame inductee.

  42. generickat says:

I wonder if he rolled into the portrait studio.

  43. Joanne says:

This takes the cake-I don’t think we will see a more awkward picture. It took me a while to even spot the roller skates. What are people thinking???????? I think the ill fitted, tight clothes really bother me the most!

  44. Tulip says:

He is fast…in more ways than one!

  45. mel says:

“Do a little dance. Make a little love… get down tonight. Get down tonight.”

    Oh boy.

  46. dsto says:

Next on CHiPS! John and Ponch have met their match in a jewlery thief that evades arrest on rollerskates!

  47. Palmesan says:

I think the picture was taken this week – he looks like a British politician who’s decided to get “with it” to appeal to younger voters ….

  48. Stuart says:

And, yet…Somewhere there is a mother proudly showing this picture to this day saying, “Wasn’t my baby boy soooo handsome?” :D

  49. Nick says:

the best is the caption because, well, GREY and yeah, there is some anatomy showing.

  50. Gee says:

    Oh my.

This pretty much tops all other pictures of awkwardness!
