Imagine what his other outfits must look like if THIS was the BEST choice for his PROFESSIONAL portrait. I want to know the thought process that lands a person in a place where they put THIS outfit on, and think they look hot.
No. I just changed my mind. I don’t want to know after all. It might be contagious.
He reminds me of a middle-aged Andy Kaufman, and it looks like the kind of photo Andy would have done! Maybe, like Elvis, Andy is still out there somewhere!
I sincerely wish this site would include this picture on their Facebook page – somewhere, anywhere. It’s really THAT good. I saw this last night, and came back again tonight to laugh hysterically once again. Oh and I’m certain the Olan Mills photographer kept a copy for himself. Who WOULDN’T??
I enjoy wondering what the photographer from Olan Mills must have been thinking? Maybe, “hey, hold still a minute… let me find that gray background I have here somewhere… I think it will be perfect!”
A PLEA FOR SUPPORT: Okay, I’m addicted to this photo. I keep coming back to look at it. I know it’s just a matter of time before it’s my screensaver. Let’s not let this gem fall to the wayside. The only reason it didn’t get more comments is because we all agree it’s the real deal 100% awkward. There’s no photoshop controversy, no over-the-top meanness, no politics involved, etc. Just a confident dude capturing the moment at the height of his roller-skating abilities. So, for the love of laughter, leave another comment or two if you agree with me!!!
(Yes, this was awkward to write but I will sleep better tonight knowing I’ve done my part. Thanks and goodnight)
I was enjoying this website…clicking along and smiling…THEN this shot came up and I stopped. And laughed. THEN I read there were skates…and I laughed harder! Thanks Jay and Gail for your backstory! I’m so glad you uploaded Gray man.
OHMYGOD! I was laughing too hard, tears rolling down my eyes, then I read the post that there were skates! It took another few minutes to be able to see clearly enough to look closer. He’s so proud of himself, all lumpy and grey. I’m hoping he’s still out there, skating away.
I think he went to my church. No? Okay… but anyone who went to a presbyterian church in the 80s knew a guy like this. Single, sings in the choir, strangely devout yet flamboyant.
I’m hearing “Dancing Queen” playing in the background, while 1000′s of pretty, dazzling lights from the disco ball play upon the skating rink floor! Haaaaa!
Where are they now? – This gentleman has moved on to character work in such films as The Lord of the Rings, Monster House, and the new animated film “9″…
I just don’t understand the odd lumpage. I mean it’s so….odd. So monochromatic. Was it some some of thing like colorforms, where you could add different outfits to him afterward? What is it?!?!?! I need to know!!!
Thanks Jay for letting me know how you got my cousin’s picture. I can totally believe that he passed these out. I didn’t know he sang, but that does not surprise me either. His older sister lived with my family during her last year of high school and until she got married, and she and her mother had a falling out and so because of that, we didn’t see them much for many years. My father (his sister is the mother of the guy in the pic and said female cousin who lived with us) stayed in touch with them and we would hear about stuff through him, but I rarely saw this guy much after we were young teens. I guess every family has a few nuts in the family tree, and he’s definitely been one of ours.
I am the person who submitted the picture. I have a good friend of mine who knew this man personally, and was given this picture. The man in the picture handed out these pictures to members of the choir in his church…
At church one time a young lady noticed that his license plate said “TBUNS”. When asked what this meant he replied, “My friends call me Thunderbuns.”
He, obviously, was a big fan of roller skating.
He sang a solo one Sunday at church, the words were,”Like the woman at the well I was seeking” He sang, “Like the woman in the well I was sinking.”
i don’t know how i would have gone another day in my life without the backstory… rofl.. i really need to stop getting on here at night. i’m sure i’m waking up the neighbors!!! ha haha
I just have to thank you, Jay, for bringing me a lifetime of joy with this photo. And the nickname “Thunderbuns” could not be more fitting. I imagine magical evenings filled with rolling/spinning to tunes like “Turning Japanese”, “If You Like Pina Coladas”, and “Xanadu”. Skate on, T-Buns. Skate on.
Ok I’ll bite. Skin-tight, turtleneck, bodysuit, long-sleeves, BELLBOTTOMS & ROLLERSKATES, Friar Tuck hairdo, missing package, blending in. Photog nightmare, the stuff of a comedian’s dreams!!
***Any comments that are offensive to the point of being viciously personal, racist, homophobic, exceedingly profane, violent or too graphic in nature won't be posted. We want to keep this site a friendly place to be awkward. Thanks!***

NO. Ohhh no. No, no, no, no, no. No.
But on the other hand…..YES!!!!!
Bruce’s ‘Roll, Bounce’ persona proved quite inspirational to his younger brother, Richard Simmons. It’s apparent enthusiasm runs in the family.
BUT HOW CAN THEY SEE ME?!?!
He reminds me of a middle-aged Andy Kaufman, and it looks like the kind of photo Andy would have done! Maybe, like Elvis, Andy is still out there somewhere!
Is that a spare rollerskate wheel in your pocket, or are you just happy to see me?

oy vey.
im still cracking up at this pic months later !!!!! i think i woke up my neighborhood again lol hahahahahahahahhaaahhaha
I enjoy wondering what the photographer from Olan Mills must have been thinking? Maybe, “hey, hold still a minute… let me find that gray background I have here somewhere… I think it will be perfect!”
Laughing so hard that I am unable to answer the phone at work!
I am crying/laughing hysterically. at work. I cannot stop. This is THE BEST, true Awkwardness. Backstory sold me.
I’ve been laughing at this picture for months. MONTHS! And, I only noticed the skates today.
It’s like the gift that keeps on giving!!
Roll Bounce.
i honestly just dont know what to make of this picture
My girl wants to party all the time…
This is the best picture ever taken. Ever. I wish they sold reprints.
This could possibly be the best picture in the world.
He reminds me of Penquin from Batman…lol
this reminds me of that big foot photo caught walking through the trees. maybe its his stance.

Agreed. This picture definitely needs to be in the Hall of Fame.
oops! I meant Most Popular Posts, not Hall of Fame.
Well there SHOULD be a hall of fame…and TBUNS should definitely be in it!! I have to confess, I come back every time I need a laugh too!!!
I cannot pretend I don’t secretly want an outfit like that… for “No one is home but me! time”, of course. No roller skates, though.
I love that this picture is a professional one by olan mills and not just one of his super cool skating buddies taking it of him.
What is that shiny thing near his left hand?? Is he wearing a huge ring?!
This picture needs more jazz hands.
I think what really gets me is his facial expression. Instead of looking surprised, or disgruntled, he looks like he is enjoying himself greatly.
probably the most epic of all awkward pictures
the face makes me crack up every time
This is my favourite picture on this site. I have actually been giggling about it for hours. xD
HE’S ON SKATES!!!
I was enjoying this website…clicking along and smiling…THEN this shot came up and I stopped. And laughed. THEN I read there were skates…and I laughed harder! Thanks Jay and Gail for your backstory! I’m so glad you uploaded Gray man.
i did not know this person was wearing skates either until I read an older post. I just keep saying “wow!” and giggling.

OK.
Balding.
Tight and loose in unnecessary places.
All gray.
Skates.
Possible action pose.
Am I missing anything?
Now, how could this NOT be on this website?
I feel like it somehow completes it in a way.
I was already dying because of the monochromatic lumpiness of Mr. Gray. Then I totally lost it when I saw the elephant bell pants and skates.
By his body position, you just know he was busting some dance moves when the photo was taken.
I’m hearing “Dancing Queen” playing in the background, while 1000′s of pretty, dazzling lights from the disco ball play upon the skating rink floor! Haaaaa!
Dancing Queen? I was thinking more along the lines of “Wired for Sound” by Cliff Richard.
Crap! Now I’ve got “Dancing Queen” stuck in my head!!!
GREAT visual, though!! Too funny!
why?
this is the most epic-est photograph on this sight. i want to meet this sexy man. look at his freaking face. epic.
That outfit is a leeeeetle too tight….
This is hands down my absolute favourite photo. I Facebooked it.
mee too!
I FACEBOOKED IT TOO!!! laughed for a long time and i still come back every few days to cheer myself up!
He is SO lumpy! Bwahahahahahahahaaaa!
Ohhh dear, this is the best I’ve seen so far. The back story is amazing!
Where are they now? – This gentleman has moved on to character work in such films as The Lord of the Rings, Monster House, and the new animated film “9″…

So where is he.. just looks like hands and a face.. yeppers he’s blendin alright!

RAFLM*O!!! Thanks for the background info! heeheee
we are wondering what this guys name would be and its driving us crazy…
jay please fill us in…
I just have to thank you, Jay, for bringing me a lifetime of joy with this photo. And the nickname “Thunderbuns” could not be more fitting. I imagine magical evenings filled with rolling/spinning to tunes like “Turning Japanese”, “If You Like Pina Coladas”, and “Xanadu”. Skate on, T-Buns. Skate on.
Is it me, or is this guy levitating?
Hahahaha he so is.He’s a jedi.
he is wearing rollerskates
the roller skates are what really make this photo.
Roller Skates! This may be the best picture on this site. I can’t stop laughing.
Thanks – i just thought they were bad shoes. I fear that my arsenal of wisecracks will be fully spent on this pic, so I must abstain. *sigh*
Ok I’ll bite. Skin-tight, turtleneck, bodysuit, long-sleeves, BELLBOTTOMS & ROLLERSKATES, Friar Tuck hairdo, missing package, blending in. Photog nightmare, the stuff of a comedian’s dreams!!
I hadn’t even spotted the skates!
I am now in tears …
.. in work
I think he secretly wanted to be a Wheeler on Return to Oz.
I cannot stop looking at him and giggling..
I neither fainted reading these comments. And the caption makes me laugh every time. That is the awkward on so many levels. Gumby gone wrong.
