Zia and Nada were the daughters of Grand Duke MIchael of Russia and his morganatiic wire, Sophie von Merenberg. Zia married Sir Harold Wernher, BT – owners of Luton Hoo. Nada married Prince George of Battenberg, later 2nd Marquess of Milford Haven.
Georgina and Myra are Zia’s daughters. Their son, David, was the third marquess and Philip’s best man. Philip and David were first cousins as Philip’s mother was George’s sister Alice. The Duchess of Kent was a cousin to Philip and to Zia and Nada.
Queen Elizabeth II and Philip spent their honeymoon at Luton Hoo.
I didnt recognise HRH Princess Marina, The Duchess of Kent, her husband HRH Duke of Kent was killed on active service during WWll, by the way, We and the Poles and a few other free europeans plus the Empire, did a very good job of keeping the nazis at bay long enough for you lot over there to have to join in, otherwise you lot might have made peace with them, plenty of you didnt want to fight him.
Both my parents were involved, Mum lived on the south coast and got bombed lots my Dad was in the RAF before the war started so I do not take as humour cracks about the war!
A sitting Conga Line:
L-R Lady Rachel Davidson (lady in waiting to the duchess of Kent); Nada, Marchioness of Milford Haven, Lady Zia Wernher, Georgina Wernher, the Marquess of Milford Haven, Prince Philip of Greece, duchess of Kent, Sir Harold Wernher, Myra Wernher, and unidentified woman.
Get a grip Colonials, this is exactly the kind of public school/upper class fooling about that the Brits got up to at house partys, It shows the family of the Marquess of Milford- Haven including Prince Phillip, now Duke of Edinburgh, and they are all Mountbatten couisins and pals, when this was taken only Prince Phillip may have been royal unless he had already given up his Greek/Danish title in preperation for becomg a British citizen and marrying Princess Elizabeth now of course Queen, nothing naughty just country house silliness and larks.
I think this one is great. Clearly a bunch of rule breaking, go-against-the-flow types. You don’t see many photos from that era with such charisma. Although the old guy 3 in from the right is taking it all a bit seriously…
I agree. So many photo’s from this time the people have such stern looks. Maybe it was the cast from one of Mickey Rooney’s movies or just a family that liked to have fun.
I agree – the pose could be construed as awkward, but they’re laughing and having fun, so I think it’s better than just a formal group picture. This is the type of family pic I’d love to have on display!
What I noticed was there are no overweight peeps in this picture unlike today when this picture would have been impossible to take because nobody would fit on anybody else’s lap. Just a thought I had.
I think its cute. They are obviously having fun and you dont ever see this in this age of a photo. Thanks for sharing!! Quite a refreshing change in old photographs.

Ah, gotta love the Brits!
Marlene Koenig…thanks for the detail. It makes it all even better.
I should add –

This photo was taken at Luton Hoo in 1944

One of my all time favorites!!! I would have hated to be the one left out and stuck taking the picture.
I’m having trouble dealing with how awesome this is.
Awkward + old school = photo magic!
3rd from the left. Freakishly long fingers! An alien perhaps?
this is actually a lovely picture, if you ask me
Surely at least two of them ended up pregnant after this pic?! I love it too, such uncharacteristic photographic frivolity for the time!
I have seen this pic before. The tall guy in the middle is Prince Phillip.
Brings to mind an old game that I don’t think anyone plays anymore–
Thar’s a Bar
Whar??
Over Thar!
so why is this a celebrity photo??
What royal family is this? My guess is Belgium, or the Netherlands, or Denmark. Am I close?
Nope. British!
My life is complete now that I’ve seen this fabulous photo.
This would be far less awkward if it were boy-girl-boy-girl
oh….and the tall man in the middle looks pleased and the woman on his lap looks like she’s thinkin…”cigarette time!”
and we thought the silly poses started in the 80′s……….
Those old-timey folks sure knew how to party.
Doctor Sigmund Freud family reunion! Sometimes a banana is just a banana!
I love this picture! It’s just so fun and out of the ordinary for that particular time period, as others have said. It’s really cool.
Bunch of dirty little fun-havers!
Worst..lapdance…ever…
Most expensive lapdance ever…
Can anyone name each person in this photo? It’s like a royal family guessing game.
^^^ Oops, nevermind this. I didn’t see the older comments
So I see Prince Philip and Princess Elizabeth…who are the others, more royalty?
The guy in the middle is John Kerry, I just know it!

Educate us colonials (the ones whose ancestors saved British “arses” during the war), which one is Prince Phillip?
Oh, Mary, barf. Can’t take just a little joke, can you, way to make us all look bad…
PP is the tall one in the middle, I believe. Just look at that profile.
Is it just me or does the guy in the middle look like Prince William?
That’s his grandfather, Prince Philip!
2nd person from the right. Is that a man? It looks like Herman Munster in a dress!
I think this is a cute picture! I like it actually.
The third woman from the back has not had that much fun EVER!
What is the lady 3rd from the left sitting on???
Grandma third from the back is MAD!
I love the expression on the woman near the end with the dark lipstick. It looks like she is saying “Where do you think you’re putting your hand?”
Ed, that had better be an actual banana in your pocket.
Banana shelf
Well, it’s nice to know that they really do unbend once in awhile. Or should that be bend?

TONIGHT ON THE DISCOVERY CHANNEL: The History of Conga Line Tragedies
I was humming that tune while looking at this or I thought backwards bunny hop go bad!
They didn’t think to put the heaviest/tallest on the bottom?
Are you kidding? The tallest guy right in the middle looks a little too happy to be right where he’s at.
This is the cutest picture I’ve ever seen!!
I agree – the pose could be construed as awkward, but they’re laughing and having fun, so I think it’s better than just a formal group picture. This is the type of family pic I’d love to have on display!
The second women from the front is hatching plans.
Okay, I guess this works… if awkward = hilarious.
Ain’t nothin wrong with a little bump-n-grind
Woman third from the left is definitely yelling, “S***TTTTT!”
I love this picture!!
What I noticed was there are no overweight peeps in this picture unlike today when this picture would have been impossible to take because nobody would fit on anybody else’s lap. Just a thought I had.
That’s because the McDonalds brothers hadn’t arrived on the scene yet!
I noticed too how skinny everyone was…..maybe they were all on war rations…
True…but I’m surprised they don’t all have cigarettes in their hands since so many people smoked back then.
Especially after a pose like that!
It just goes to show you’re never too old for games (look who is leading the group)
hmmm well the woman 3rd from left looks like she got “poked” and woman in center looks awfully pleased…..
Guess she got “poked” too.
I think its cute. They are obviously having fun and you dont ever see this in this age of a photo. Thanks for sharing!! Quite a refreshing change in old photographs.
Almost exactly what I was thinking. I think it’s fun and charming.
I do say, old chap. We indulged in some debauchery that day. Twas a real doozy.
Loooooooooove it!!!!!
great comment
