Spreading the Awkwardness
What I love about this picture and what is awkward to me is the “obvious” son-in-law/brother-in-law to the right who can barely get in the picture. You can tell he wasn’t too comfortable being in there.
My ex used to have huge tattoo of Ralph, taken from this exact pic, on his bicep…Now that’s awkward!
Ralph Stanley is one of the masters of bluegrass music ….this is still a pretty funny picture though. loving the one guy with short sleeves and a different colored hat!

Dude Ralph Stanley is a BAM*. Nothing ackward at all about this picture. I sing his Roadside Tavern song almost every weekend at the bars.
ralph stanley is baller no matter what he wears. and anyone who is in a picture with him could be completely naked and still look cool. just being that close to ralph stanley must make some of his complete awesomeness rub off on you.

Ralph is my cousin, so I was a bit shocked to see this pic on a website such as this.
I hope people click on the comment section to at least understand what this pic is about.

Obviously, as others have pointed out, an album cover. Is it awkward – perhaps a little, as all of these staged shots of awkward musicians are. However, they are not a family. Now, if you had a picture of RS at his house, with his family, and it was awkward – then fair game. This, however, doesn’t seem like it belongs here.

I love Ralph Stanley, but you can’t say that this isn’t an awkward photo. Ralph doing the weird hands thing and the guy on the right doing the cheerleader lean-in? Not to mention left side strange hand on the hip guy. I’m going to go listen to a Ralph Record now and remember that good musicians need to hire good photographers.
I am a HUGE Ralph Stanley fan, but I do wonder…why do bluegrass bands feel the need to wear cowboy hats? They’re not cowboys, nor do they play cowboy music. I find it odd. And YES, it is an awkward picture. I actually think it’s cool that he’s on here!

you all are missing the joke in this picture….check out the guy on the right who has a differnet color hat. He has this awkward lean sort of like he snuck into the picture to deliver a message…. “Um, Mr Stanley phone call on line 1″. Look closer at some of these pictures…it is truely awkward with mr grey hat leaning into the shot.

as soon as I saw this picture I was so irked that Dr. Ralph Stanley got put up here! Agreed, this one needs to come down!
First, it’s not a family. It’s a bluegrass band (a LEGENDARY bluegrass band). Second, it’s not awkward. It’s pretty much required that old school bluegrass bands wear cowboy hats, white shirts, and ties. Third, Dr. Ralph Stanley for President!!

I knew it was Ralph Stanley! For those of you who don’t know who he is, pick up the “O Brother Where Art Thou” Soundtrack. He sings the “O Death” sequence and wrote (i think) the “Angel Band” song at the end. It’s cool his photo is on here. If People of Walmart has Ric Flair and Michael Cera, this site can have Ralph Stanley.
His version of “O Death” is really chilling. In a good way.

Y’all are missing it. The awkward part is everyone in white hats except for the guy on the right. He must be a fill in and not a regular member of the band. Or he forgot to look at the “what clothes to wear tonight” list.
What the HELL? I had no idea who this man was until this post. I read about him and he seems like a nice guy. But, just because he’s a musician, and thus not a ~regular person, doesn’t mean his pose isn’t awkward… or funny. People need to calm down.

I can not believe that this picture is on this website! This is probably a pic for of the many cd’s, ect…that has been published. Dr. Ralph Stanly has won Emmys for songs and has appeared all around this earth to perform and share his traditional music….and besides one of the members of the band is my first cousin, who happens to also be a gifted player. It is fun to look at different pic’s of people-but not to make fun, this website is for “awkward family photos.” And this goes for other pic’s too that people are making fun of.

Agreed!! He is the godfather of bluegrass. He is a living legend. Saw him a few years ago in concert and he’s amazing.

Correct! This is the bluegrass legend Ralph Stanley and his band the Clinch Mtn. Boys. Albeit a somewhat awkward photo, at 85 yrs. old and still playing over 200 tour dates a year…Ralph can grab is fingers or whatever he wants.

Let it be known that his son Ralph the 2nd (on left with crossed arms) is the most awkward person ever! The night I met him he fell over a firewood pile while trying to sauvly introduce himself.
