Behind the Awkwardness: The Patriot
November 15th, 2009
“My grandfather is the star of many awkward family photos. Here, he poses pantsless, with a pair of kettlebells, artistically composed at his feet to highlight his lack of pants and booty short spandex. The flag in the background pretty much says it all: this is AMERICA.”
(submitted by Hannah)

You’ll shoot your eye out!
Who wears short shorts? Grampa wears SHORT shorts!
They hung the Christmas balls out on the Fourth of July.
Looks like someone fought in the Battle of the Bulge, and won!
These are my kettlebells, this is my gun, these are for lifting, this is for fun.
OMG LOL
WOW…go Gramps! Lookin good!
I had no idea they were detachable. Guess I should have paid more attention in biology.
Win!
America, even our elderly still have the power to carry their iron balls.
This has got to be the most awkward photo I’ve ever seen. Totally awesome.
For once, Granpa has EXACTLY the right amount of cowbell.
LOL, hilarious!
HA!
Definitely photo-shopped.
Really? Because older people can’t be in shape like grandpa?
“n’ I’m proud to be an Americaannnnn…where at least I know they’re freeeee….”
“And I’m freeeeee, free ballllinnnnn”
OMG, I am laughing so hard I am bawling!!! (balling?)
I LOVE your Grandpa. This is like seeing what my husband will look like in 30 years or so. My husband sports that very same look!
AMERICA: Our Balls are so big we can’t even wear pants!
Brought to you by The Greatest Generation.
It was a nice family photo until I scrolled down and realized it was a pants optional photo shoot.
Some families just added more to the American melting pot than others did, and this grandfather wants you to know exactly WHAT!
America… F*** YEAH!
The flag is not backwards…it’s appropriate to have the stars in the upper left hand corner when faced out to the street or hanging on a post.
And REALLY? that’s what you focus on in this photo? I see a whole lot more to focus on. Hubba Hubba
Myyyyyyy goodness! Actually, Grandma and Grandpa both look to be in great shape…but dang, Grandpa, put on some pants!
LOL The girl in the middle’s body language is hilarious! She’s all turned to the side…I don’t know you, I don’t know you….hahaha
*Real American Hero…*
We salute you, Mr Uber Obvious Innuendo Ball Man…
“When it comes being a pumped up septuagenarian you leave nothing to the imagination. So here’s to you Mr. King of The Villlages. May your kettelbells never breech your spandex.”
*chortles*
Two thumbs up! Love it!
outstanding…two kettlebell salute to Stacey and Snowrider.
I think both GrandParents should put down their toys before they poke someone’s eye out! Good Grief!
Oh my! Gramps, put on some pants, stat! VERY awkward, indeed.
If we could find a grandpa like this for Marney, Lisa Byron Chesterford could host Thanksgiving this year!
I just spit soda on my keyboard!!
Ever wonder why Hannah always has her back toward gramps in the family photos? Wonder no more.
Grandpa looks like he could kick butt. Hanna is a hottie…..but Grandma looks a little chilly. SHEESH!
i agree, hannah is a fox. and grandpa looks like he could wrestle alligators.
Damn you for making me look!
Sorry….it’s those little subtleties (did I spell that right?) that make the photo even more awkward. Let’s face it Jen, if you were in a photo and had N.E. wouldn’t YOU feel…well….awkward?
Thanks for some great laughs, folks. I can’t top any of these comments.
No wonder Hannah has her back turned to her grandfather. Ewwwww. AWKWARD
Best awkward picture EVER.
This crap is so funny! I’m not sure why I have never been here before, but now that I’m here I think I’ll stay a bit.
Welcome…you will find it so difficult to tear your eyes off the awkward that you won’t be able to find the exit…
Bahaaaaaa. WOW – holy mother of brass ones. Yikes. My poor eyes.
I vote this for most awkward pic of the year! The fact that it’s your Grandpa makes it even more awkward XD
Why is the flag backwards?
The flag is being flown correctly. When hung vertically the blue field should be in the top left. We now return you to your regularly scheduled awkwardness.
it is correct…blue field in the upper left corner.
That’s actually how you hang a flag vertically. It doesn’t seem like it should be that way but its accurate.
I can’t believe that on THIS picture there is all this discussion about how the FLAG is HUNG!!!
FTW!
Best comment!
The flag is not backwards. “When the flag is displayed either horizontally or vertically against a wall, the union should be at the top and to your left.”
There’s a flag in the picture…Oh yeah, look at that! I was so focused on grandpa I didn’t see it!
LMAO!
YAOUCH! Too much
The flag in the photo is being displayed correctly. When hung vertical, the stars on the American flag should be on the viewer’s left.
The flag is not backwards. It is properly displayed. So is Grandpa!
ZING!
You’re looking ar the flag? LOL
And does it really block the front door like that?
Only when Grandpa’s standing within…
Oh. We’re talking about the FLAG?
Evelyn – funniest comment on AFP!
But I did also wonder why the flag is blocking their front door…
When displaying the flag , vertically or horizontally, the flag’s union (stars) should be at the top, to the flag’s own right, and to the observer’s left.
It’s not. That’s the proper way to display the American flag when flown vertically…canton on its own right.
It’s not backwards. That’s the way you’re supposed to hang it when you hang it vertically, with the stars in the upper left corner, same place they are when the flag is horizontal.
Yikes – I didn’t even notice! I want to know why it’s hanging over the doorway.
To try and block grandpa when he exits the house in his short shorts?
ummm when hung vertically, the stars still remain in the top left corner.
this flag is not hung backwards.
the flag is not the only thing that is HUNG!
the flag dresses left and ummm so does gramps..
There’s a flag?
Is that Mrs. Grandpa? If not, will he go out with me? On second thought, I don’t think I could handle it.
Not sure we all want to know what you mean by “handle it”.
Oh, I think we know exactly what she means!
In the words of Jerry Lee Lewis “Great Balls O’ Steel”! Grandma certainly looks proud to be Grandpas American!
all my eyes see in that photo is the cute girl in the middle.
Ditto, she is smokin’ hot…
Is that a compound bow or is grandpa just glad to see you?
laugh at grandpa all you want, but that’s one happy grandma.
I’d leave a funny comment, but Grandpa looks like he could kick my a**
Now THIS is what I consider an Awkward Family Photo!! Finally! Grandpa, I love you for adding your uncomfortable touch to this photo. God Bless America.
Next we have a photo of Bob Johnson and family. Bob is world renown for coining the term “Cruise Missile” and in later years he came up this the term “Weapon of Mass Destruction”. Thanks Bob, a true American patriot!
Now I see why Gam’s looks soooo happy. Dang!
Oh, and I forgot to say: there IS a country for old men!
*snort*
*giggle*
THAT was a hysterical comment. I have been laughing SO hard at all of the posts. I am barely still in my chair
Let your flag fly, my friend. America means Freedom to Bulge.
Your grandfather is John Glenn?
No. He’s Dwight Eisenhower.
Wow, he’s aging really well then!
Sad thing is, I have that dress.
Sad thing is I have that underwear.
The dress is okay!
The underwear is fine, too!
You must admit, he has big balls.
guffaw! laughing really loudly!
Ow! My Eye just got poked out!
LM*AO best comment ever!
Its always fun until someone loses and eye !!
ok thats supposed to be “an eye”.
Whoa – the most awkward thing for me is the package on Papaw! God Bless America!
Amen
amazing.
Hooooooo and grandpa is packing some heat. Oh my.
Haha! My first thoughts, exactly!
Me too! I was wondering if he would be free this weekend? Perhaps Saturday nite ?
