Bill Janklow actually does not drink. He was diabetic and passed out at the wheel. There was no alcohol involved. And I am unsure of how he could have fled the crime scene considering it was in the middle of nowhere and both vehicles were totaled. get your facts before you post.
He never passed out, but was driving about 90 in a 50 zone, and ran a stop sign. A motorcycle hit his car and the guy on the motorcycle was killed at the scene. Good Ol’ Bill walked away from the accident, but he did not flee.
Governor Janklow is the guy who later became a US Congressman. He was also the guy who got convicted of driving drunk, killing a guy and then leaving the scene? What a peach.
The scary part is, I saw a kid who looked just like the boy in the white shorts a week ago. Shorts were pulled up that far and everything. Made me wince, that did.
Best part of this picture is the name on the sign. That governor later became a Representative in Congress, and was arrested for a DUI, and killed someone in a wreck. Perfect fail to go with the perfect waistband fail.
He was never arrested for a DUI, I umm hate the guy, but he ran a stop sign and a motorcycle plowed into him. He was given 100 days in jail, and the guy’s family had to sue the US government for compensation (whatever that is in such a case) and not him personally since he was on govt. duty; only going about 90 in a 50 zone and running a stop sign…….. What a guy!
That sign is roughly 30 miles East of Watertown at the MN border, roughly at the 3 o’clock position in the state. At the time, these tourists were the most important people to pass through our beloved state, and a granite marker now stands in the place where this portrait was taken.
The monument is a 10′ tall 14-ton granite carving of 100% polyester gym shorts.
In the late 90s my mother took us back to meet her family in SD (which is a long way from where we live- Australia). We have a photo similar to this – not the shorts, but 5 kids standing awkwardly in front of a sign at the border; and we weren’t really fashionable at the time either. I feel their pain!
bwahahahaha!! I just had a flashback of when I was a kid (1980-ish) going to Yellowstone as a family vacation… I think my sister & I had these outfits, we stood outside some Wyoming sign & yes, those vinyl seats & metal seatbelts were killer!
I know about where that spot it, and it not close to the missile silos, this is entering SD from MN in the norther part of the state. 212 goes from the Twin Cities to Watertown, SD and then on to the Black Hllls. this had to be taken at the MN border with SD.
Aw, man. This picture is so awesomely awkward that I am actually jealous. I wanna photoshop myself into it and put it on the mantle. I won’t, but I want to.
Oh my. Did we take a flashback to 70s gym uniforms? Look at those shorts. Wedgie Alert is right and the grass in the mouths. Wow. This isn’t awkward. It’s down right weird looking. But I agree with Heidi those shorts gotta make a comeback.

this a repeated pic….
The look on Dad’s face… “If I hear ‘are we there yet’ one more time, someone is getting left in the hayfield!”
No, kids, you won’t be able to see Mt. Rushmore on the horizon if you turn around!

huh???

I swear I know the guy in the blue…
ok, so who am I?
Hahahah I’m from South Dakota and this is how I feel.
If South Dakota was directed by Rob Zombie.
…this must happen.
Even more funny when you realize the Gov on the sign was gov from ’95 to ’03….
hah! I’m hoping that was taken during his 1979–1987 run as governor
I know it was from the 79-87 run, I went to school with the little girl in the photo.
Governor Janklow is the guy who later became a US Congressman. He was also the guy who got convicted of driving drunk, killing a guy and then leaving the scene? What a peach.
My question is … Who was taking the picture!!!???
Exactly what I was thinking! “No, no… you guys get in the picture, you all look so good today!”
OMG…..this one is so classic!!! Love it

Pull those pants up, no droopy drawers here, I want to look nice!
Now that they made it there I hope they stay. Especially Mr. Whiteshorts.
For some reason, I don’t think they’re tourists!
It appears that they also give you a wedgie as you cross the state line into South Dakota!
Why, if it isn’t my good friends Pat, Chris, Kelly, and Sam!
Ok Everyone pull up your shorts and get over by the South Dakota sign…Well Maybe we over did it on the shorts thing.
hahaha the unfortunate kid in the pink is a dead ringer of my ex’s dad!!! this made my dayy
They all need to let the waistband on their shorts down – just – one – inch.

What’s up with the freak wearing jeans?
Ummmm, the second kid from the left? His weiner is practically poking outta those snazzy shorts.
my dad grew up in South Dakota and he has a photo just like that! omg hahaha. Same outfit as the second guy from the left and everything
I am hope this sign is still standing cuz I am going to see if I can find it and take a photo in front of it…awesome!
Why, oh why was everything so awkward in the 80s? The hair, the glasses, the shorts…
They must live near one of those radioactive missile silos.
I am dying and crying! WOW! Those shorts….
I think I see that kids bow staff.
There are so many things to say, but I’m going to take the high road and simply say, “Interesting picture.”
The thought of sitting in a car on a long road trip with these shorts on makes me very uncomfortable… hahaha god how did they do it!!
And back then, seat belt buckles were chrome metal and HOT. The vinyl seats were hot, too.
I remember the hot seats and seat belts burning my legs because of short shorts like those!! Ahh… the good old days! hahaha
bwahahahaha!! I just had a flashback of when I was a kid (1980-ish) going to Yellowstone as a family vacation… I think my sister & I had these outfits, we stood outside some Wyoming sign & yes, those vinyl seats & metal seatbelts were killer!
Sure, it took a while, but they finally found a spot where they were the coolest kids around.
bwwwaaahhh! LMAO
OMG laughed till tears ran…
The saddest part is that this photo was taken just last summer.
Has anybody else noticed how long everybody’s arms are, or are their shorts just THAT short??!!?
“West 212″; it says it all.
I know about where that spot it, and it not close to the missile silos, this is entering SD from MN in the norther part of the state. 212 goes from the Twin Cities to Watertown, SD and then on to the Black Hllls. this had to be taken at the MN border with SD.

You could just say you were photoshopped out, and enjoy the arguing!!!

I finally just noticed the grass in the mouths, LOL! tryin’ to be hayseeds, cuz that’s cool in South Dakota…
Man, those short just gotta make a comeback!!!
We wear short shorts
Exactly!! Now I will be singing that darn song all day long!! LMAO
Wow I am glad they tucked in their shirt tails !!! LMAO!
Wedgie Alert!!!
Those are three of the most unfortunate pairs of shorts I’ve ever seen.
hahahahahah!!!!!!!!
The only thing better would be to have those four go back and take the same photo again – in the same outfits.
It looks like Dad just walked behind all of them and yanked their pants up as high as he could before he got in place for the picture.
…but missed the right sock on that tallest boy.
Oh my, that IS a boy! Oops.
Hahahahahahahaha!
Ha ha ha! I was thinking the same thing! Could they possibly wear their shorts any higher?
A family still the process of evolving…
Love Dad’s ‘fro.
I mean big bro’s fro.
Going through the pic and came across a family I knew! Had to say hi from an old 4th ST alum!!!
