Congratulations to Heather from The Great Divide, our little winner for the MacGruber Awkward Mullet Contest who proves that one head of hair doesn’t mean one hair style.

Poor Heather. Poor me. My mom did the same thing to my head. she said it was something people did in the eighties, and I always told her I’d never seen anyone else’s childhood pictures where they had the awful haircut. And now I have. Score: mom 1, me 0

  2. egeria says:

That’s the last time I ever vote in an AFP contest. Unless of course it a photo I’ve submitted in which case imma vote a hundred times a day.

    :rolls eyes:

    E.

  3. Marlon says:

I have two problems with this being the winner…

1.) The little girl is entirely too cute. With all the ridiculous looking schlubs, we have to pick on this little girl?

2.) It wasn’t really her choice. Even if she did pick the hair-cut, she’s too young to know what she’s doing. There’s plenty of ridiculous looking schlubs out there that should know better.

  4. Kate says:

So anybody with bangs has a mullet apparently?

  5. Lauren says:

Sherry: Not to be a stick in the mud, but you had enough time to worry about people commenting on a photo on a blog. Also, this hair cut is may technically be a mullet, but it is missing the essence of mullet-hood. However, the whole mullet joke is so five years ago its annoying.

  6. Charlie says:

Mullet schmullet. Hardly seems interesting at all. I think she won because she is cute. No one would even take a second look at her hairstyle on the street.

  7. Sherry says:

Wow, people REALLY don’t have any other problems or worries in their lives in order to get so worked up over whether or not this is a proper mullet! Some of them are SO upset and/or offended at the lack of proper “mullet-ness!!!!”

  8. Buck says:

    Not a mullet.

  9. Denise says:

I love this picture because it’s such a comedy of errors. Heather’s hair was obviously cut by a drunk person, it’s far too straight to ever make a successful mullet, and there’s no transition between the “business” and the “party” whatsoever. Just amazing!

    • Missy says:

I was wondering what to do tonight and you just gave me the perfect idea. I am going to get drunk and go style people’s hair! Awesome! Thanks for the tip!

  10. Hilly says:

That’s a banana clip, NOT a mullet. You can tell by the way the hair goes up at the top. And yes, I did wear more than my fair share of those in the early 80′s, so I know!

  11. Maryjohn says:

During the mullet years I saw this version of it quite a few times. They were ‘homemade’ mullets by people who didn’t want to spring for a hairstylist.

Billy Ray Cyrus’ mullet wasn’t gradual at all – crew cut with a tail and it was considered to be a mullet.

So lay off the little kid already!

    • helenhill says:

Totally disagree and feel your “poor little kid” argument is bs.

    • Hugh says:

No you are wrong, Billy Ray Cyrus did not have a cut like this. His hair did not have a part where short stopped and long began. I dare you to google pictures of him and find one that even remotely looks like this non-mullet. It doesn’t have to be gradual to be a mullet , but it does have to have some sort of natural transition from the “business” to the “party”. In that regard this is a FAIL.

  12. I am really bummed. Cain and Abel was totally the better picture and mullet. I think the funny looking girl from the number 3 picture was a better mullet than this.

  13. Hugh says:

So this wasn’t really of contest for viewers of this site. Instead it was just a contest to see who could get the most exposure and drive voters here via repetitive voting and radio advertising. Kind of takes the shine off the trophy if you ask me. For the record this not a mullet because there is no transition from short to long. Google mullet and look at the examples. None resemble this. And I have no interest in who won just glad it’s over.

  14. Bec says:

Fits the definition perfectly…no doubt this is a mullet!

    mul·let (mlt)
    n.

A hairstyle that is formed by cutting the hair short on the the top and sides and allowing it to grow longer in back.

    • Nerd says:

      THAT IS EXACTLY RIGHT!!!

THIS IS A MULLET NO QUESTION!!!

    • Nerd says:

This was the worst one in the contest by far

I think it would be better if people could only vote once because clearly this prevailed due to multiple votes by a small # of people

      Oh well its over now

  15. Heather (the winner) says:

Thank you, Lindsay & Yoany for voting like crazy!!!! And 94.5 The Buzz!!!! We are the champions, my friends! :)

    • helenhill says:

Election Rigged… Vote early and vote often, as they say.

    • Scruffy Bob says:

Congratulations on stuffing the ballot box.

    • Narcissus Shrugged says:

      Aha! Collusion! :)
The schlub in the tux with the Busch lite was my personal favorite, but you did have a nice half head of hair.

    • beth says:

BOOOOOOOOO!!! Normally I love this site but to find out it was rigged…I’m a bit soured now.

      • spaz says:

So you got 2 friends with computers / free time /AND a radio station in order to get the most votes. Like the mullet itself. . .lame.

But aside from that, I had a friend in high school who had that exact same style (except her hair in the back was down to her waist). This freind also had ADHD, so I imagine that getting her to sit still for a beutician, or to have a comb pulled through a whole head of long hair, (and parents who would never consider having their daughter in a regular short hair style) was behind that particular choice.

  16. HKM says:

Helen – are you kidding? That’s the definition of mullet! A ponytail requires a band of some sort actually holding the hair back. The girl in the pic simply has short hair in the front and long hair in the back – you can see the part, where the cut changes.

    • helenhill says:

You know, in all my life I have NEVER seen a cut like that called a mullet. And I wouldn’t call it that now either.

Oh well, I guess living in California in the 80s spoiled with with REAL mullets.

  17. camille says:

    Dear AFP:

What rock have I been under to have JUST discovered you?
Thanks for the snort-laughs this early a.m. I soooooo needed it.

I love you, and your little mullet too.

  18. helenhill says:

Really? She’s cute and all, but that’s a ponytail, not a mullet.

    • Steph says:

No, I’d say that’s a really good story. Wish they would share, though. Did her younger brother get a hold of some electric clippers and attack her while she was sleeping? Was a giant wad of bubble gum the culprit? Perhaps there was an outbreak of lice at her school and mom got a little carried away. *sigh* I guess we’ll never know…

    • Carl says:

      I agree, I don’t see a mullet, either.

    • Sihaya says:

No, it’s cut short even over her ears.

Why do I suspect that there was an incident involving gum?

    • adfogg says:

You are correct. Ponytail not mullet. I see 5 mullets better than this every day. To use an overused term… FAIL.

    • MCR says:

Agreed. I don’t get this shot…What am I missing here?

    • John R. says:

      Yeah, I agree.

      Photo FAIL.

    • blueMagoo says:

Yeah it’s a PONYTAIL not a mullet, Yeesh!

    • KJ says:

Are you people blind? Her hair is cut short (boy style) to right behind her ears and then it was left long! It’s pretty obvious that her hair is NOT in a pony tail. Poor kid.

    • Heather says:

my name is heather (not the same heather) and i, too had this haircut. it certainly is a mullet and the torture it brought on in elementary school was immense. let the girl have her day in the sun. hasn’t she been through enough already?

ps, the deal is that it was an easy at-home cut. mom or aunt would chop everything from the ears forward to avoid getting hair in the kid’s eyes & food. it was a little-known form of torture in the late 80s.

  19. Heather says:

Does this mean I can finally stop seeing MacGruber ads in every other entry? I don’t even care about the movie.

  20. Cla says:

    Kidding. Righteous mullet!
