*sigh* That brings back many memories. The people in this photo look awesome as far as I am concerned. I wonder if any of them used toothpaste (along with copious amounts of hairspray) to help their hair stay so tall?
I’m the tall guy in the photo. Here are some successful (and not so successful) products we used to get our hair so high:
*Aquanet
*Sugar water
*Toothpaste
*Eggwhites (!)
Beware if you plan to use these techniques for your next Halloween party – the sugar water attracts bees in summer, and the egg whites can smell like a wet dog if it gets wet. I knew I would someday be famous!
P.S. Hello to all in the photo if you happen to find this!
Thanks for the reply Brian. You did an amazing job with your hair! Sometimes I miss the 80s. I went to my 20th high school reunion last year. Nobody had cool hair any more. It was kind of sad. We can all enjoy the photos though.
I also remember spraying with hairspray until the hair was wet, then using a curling iron on the wet hair/hairspray to ‘set’ it better and make it really stiff. The louder the ensuing sizzle the better.
I just love it! The guy on the right has hair that has clearly been influenced by the Thompson Twins, but judging by the scarf he’s a bit of a Japan/David Sylvian fan!
We were all there one way or another
Wow, it’s like someone put bits of The Cure, Siouxsie Sioux, The Thompson Twins, Howard Jones, and Roxette together in a blender and hit “Liquify”. It poured out as a big glop, and then they sprayed the crap out of it with Aqua Net.
Best of all, you just KNOW that some of them are now super-conservative, church people who won’t let their kids deviate from the norm! (they’ve also burned their copies of this picture)
Since this is a picture of me and my friends from prom 1987, I can ASSURE you that none of us is super or even mildly conservative, that only one of us had kids, and that this photo is still proudly on display in some of our homes.
Cool! I love the pic! I graduated in ’89 and this makes me homesick fro the 80′s! I had the BIG Hair and Aquanet was just not enough! I needed Stiff Stuff, but we didn’t have it then! I used to pouff up one side of my hair and shave the other….way too cool!
So glad to hear that Diana!!! You and your friends were much more fortunate than I was… my senior year was unfortunately saturated in Disco and The Bee Gees. I’d much rather have had ’87 music to listen to than ’78 music (not to mention your fashions were more desirable as well)!
This was actually a GREAT day – I was a lowly sophomore, dating the tall senior guy in the back and getting to go to prom with all his friends. I was SO in the zone.
Excellent! This is a picture of me and my friends from Prom 1987, submitted by the person in the front left. Calm down, none of us are related. Yes, that was Aqua Net. Yes, we liked The Cure, but I liked Siouxsie better, clearly. I’m the one in the red kimono.
Obviously you were not born in the 80′s because it’s Anthony Michael Hall-you also obviously have not seen the Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles or Weird Science-all classics
Okay, okay, I’m the “square” guy in the centre. Please keep in mind they were all seniors (I was dating the tall guy), and I was so desperate to be cool. I have gotten SO much mileage out of this over the years since 1987, even if I am the poser…

No, no, no….not the Cure. Definitely Animotion. Look it up. “You are an obsession, you’re my obsession”
“Yesterday I got so old, I felt I could die”…
My twenty-year reunion is this summer…. I can so relate to this prom pic.
It’s not Friday, but I’m in love with this picture!
Two words: Kick. Ass.

As the say…”the higher the hair, the closer to God”!
When I went to my HS 20th, many of the guys didn’t have HAIR anymore, cool or otherwise!
Rock it while ya got it!
I remember sugar water.

Hey Brian! (This is Coll, formerly Peter.) Isn’t it great being famous?
There are some things about the eighties I won’t miss.
You’re all beautiful! Love the pic!
I just love it! The guy on the right has hair that has clearly been influenced by the Thompson Twins, but judging by the scarf he’s a bit of a Japan/David Sylvian fan!

OH. SO. AWESOME! (effin-a man!)
This was my era, as well. Thank God I was too poor in high school to afford hairspray and a back-comb or this could have very well been me too.

And I Ran… I ran so far away…couldn’t get away…
The look like a cool bunch of kids. Love it.
To the dude in the front: It’s a sad day when looking normal is abnormal.
This was actually a GREAT day – I was a lowly sophomore, dating the tall senior guy in the back and getting to go to prom with all his friends. I was SO in the zone.
So I’m the guy on the right with the GINORMOUS red hair. I would like to apologize for all the damage I did to the ozone layer!

Accepted into the clique just weeks before prom, Steve and Debbie did not have time to get their hair up to full fabulouso.

The caption makes this photo about a million times better.
Ah, the 80′s. Gotta love it.
I suspect the annual expenditure of hair products by this family could satisfy the national debt!

This is my era as well-so I knew that Aqua Net had to be involved. These kids today and their “natural feeling” hair sprays.
I agree, too, that Siouxsie Sioux was, and continues to be one cool chick.
The redheaded guy in the back kind of looks like Prince Harry.
Six different ways to style my hair…
that’s some BIG hair! Hey, is that Michael Anthony Hall in the front?
Obviously you were not born in the 80′s because it’s Anthony Michael Hall-you also obviously have not seen the Breakfast Club, Sixteen Candles or Weird Science-all classics
Good times.
I think I see Alannah Currie from the Thompson Twins in the back row on the left!

Liar, Liar, Pants on Fire!
Nope. No fire here. Auburn High School, Washington State, prom 1986. Clockwise from left: Co, Brian, Diana, Mark, me, Julie.

“EIGHTIES”
(by Killing Joke)
“I’m living in the eighties! Eighties! I have to push, I have to struggle” (with my aquanet can and unmanageable hair)
Best…80s…Prom…Photo…Evah!
Who let Lady Di and the dude in a track suit tux in?
Seriously, the girl on the left looks like Drew Barrymore!
I know what you mean! It’s like this band was getting their pic taken, when the two in front slipped in for their prom photo op!

This isn’t awkward, it’s AWESOME!!!!
Are you serious? There was NEVER a time when this looked good!
oh, come on! in the 80′s, everyone looked like this. it was a magical time!
Oh, I beg to differ. This was an awesome look when I was in 10th grade
YES, there was a time when this was very fashionanle, you are probably too young to remember.
Uh…well….I’m from the class of 88 and I can tell you that most of my high school career was dressed like this. And my friends. And a couple teachers!
Yup, I was from the class of 85, and this is a classic Flock of Seagulls look! Love it, and loved the 80′s!!!
Not awkward to me. Love the look. Also love The Cure.
This is simply awesome. It’s just like my sister and friends in high school. Classes of 1986-1988.
They are fabulous!!!
Detangler
This looks like the poster for a John Hughes movie. I love it!
that’s what I totally thought LOL
It’s the Electric Light Socket Orchestra!
Who let the square in?
She’s pretty in pink….
He’s the Anthony Michael Hall character….it fits.
Was this picture taken just before a lightning strike?
Just after.
hahaha. The Cure is my fav band. This is sooo Robert Smith. But some how the guy and gal in front just don’t belong in the pix.
The family that Aqua Net’s together stays together.
Rock me, Amadeus
