Doncha love the little guy? We have countless family photos where we (the older kids) are sullen and the youngest is happy as can be.
Even the jumbo sized Coca Cola failed to liven up this shindig.
Looks like Mom is having ice cream with caramel sauce for dinner.
Conversation 30 seconds before Dad snaps picture:
“Oh for crying out loud, Jennifer! Just put on the wretched hat and smile for your father. I said SMILE!”
BTW, I don’t think they look dysfunctional. I think they look like any family with a teen and preteen would look after forcing those two to wear a pointy hat with dinosaurs for a picture. Just think how’d they look if they knew that ol’ David was going to post it on the internet one day.
On the shelf behind the boy in blue is a set of Funk and Wagnalls encyclopedias. We had the exact same set, circa 1988. I bet it is 1988.

I’m pretty sure that’s a reference to the fact that there is no cake – “Slice of chicken” instead of a “slice of cake” .. OBV.

You’re spot on on the year. Coca Cola Classic came out in mid 1985, so it’s after that. And that kid in the blue shirt looks *exactly* like I did in 1988!

It has got to be the little boys b-day and he just thinks it is great that his mom made his “too cool” older bro and sis where the hats!!!! Great picture.
