Yes, this is for real, and it is Caplin Rous, who has passed away. He was as gentle as a lamb, please remember him with a smile in your heart, he loved everyone he ever met.

  2. Steph says:

Is that a capybara for real? It’s a lot more enormous than I thought they were! YIKES!

  3. madison says:

it looks like a giant guinea pig!!!

  4. Rachelle says:

Reminds me of Tom & Jerry when Jerry is replaced with a kangaroo, & Tom thinks Jerry grew. Tom soon found out kangaroos box! LOL!

  8. Doreen says:

OMG!!! Is that its bed, and what’s up with the grass surrounding it? I’m convinced that thing could eat the little boy!

  9. Matt says:

How in the world did they manage to get a pet cabivara? I grew up in Brazil and have never even heard of that being done! Awesome!

  10. Trixie says:

Billy, I done told you to stop feedin’ Peanut so much! Now look at her!

  13. kyle says:

    hmm.. where is mommy?

  14. Amanda says:

Is this Dobye the capybara? He is my friend on facebook.

  15. JennyBenny says:

    Best caption-to-picture EVER!

And I can say that after spraying coffee through my nose and onto the keyboard. Ow

  16. Tammy- says:

You can just tell brother and sister on the left terrorize the hell out of little brother with this thing.

  17. Ponyo says:

You can see these on David Attenborough’s Life of Mammals documentary. You should see them swimming in the water like hippos. I want one…

  18. tmansbamaw says:

I saw some in person @ my grandson’s birthday party @ the Chattanooga Zoo in March. I did freak out when I saw them; had no clue something like that existed. But, they didn’t seem too aggressive; they were “more frightened of us than we were of them.” LOL!

  19. amy says:

Please say this rodent was photo-shopped. Please.

  20. LKT says:

I think they might need to hire some Peruvian flute players before this thing attacks the city!

  21. beckster says:

This would freaking scare the you-know-what outta me. “momma gimme a kiss” I would definitely be screaming out for Westley!

  22. taino_sam says:

i’d hate to clean after it….

  23. Groovymom says:

    It’s Willard!

  24. Carole says:

Imagine the size of the wheel that thing runs on. Imagine how little sleep you’d get while it is running on the giant wheel all night.

    • daler says:

hahahaha! The visual is cracking me up!

    • Sioux says:

or the hamster ball? the older brother and sister probably put the little guy in the hamster ball. that’s why he looks terrified!

    • tmansbamaw says:

I’m now picturing an act in the Barnum & Bailey Circus- giant rats endlessly running on giant wheels… And outside PETA workers hold up signs saying “Stop the spinning!” or “Free the Giant Rats!” Since this capybara is wearing a bandana, I’m really thinking he could make it in the rodeo!

  25. Lori says:

Are those guinea pigs that the dad and oldest boy are holding?

  26. Kari says:

I dig his bandana! Very Bon Jovi of him.

    • ScoutC says:

I missed the purple dog harness before — maybe it’s leash trained.

      • Be3t says:

I noticed it too. Imagine living in that neighborhood. “Aww, here comes the giant rodent family again. Hey! If you think you’re gonna let that thing ‘go’ in my yard, you’ve got another think coming!'”

  27. Molly says:

That is a hell of a thing!

  28. Heather says:

I love how the littlest boy is the only one with a “get me the hell out of here” look on his face.

  29. fedoraTm says:

    I think that’s Caplin!

  30. Deer says:

Take that back. That wouldn’t really work unless they found a teeny little bandana to put on it.

  31. Deer says:

Are we sure that this isn’t one of those perspective mind-trick pictures where they put something in the foreground and it looks huge in comparison to what is really behind it?

    • Brian says:

I think it’s a combination of a very large rodent plus a perspective trick tthat makes it appear even larger. They’re big, but they aren’t THAT big.

    • CarrieM says:

That’s what I thought too, then I looked it up; they’re for real, and they grow up to 4 feet in length.

  32. Nichole says:

If you also missed it there are two guinea pigs in the pic lol
kinda makes me think “hunny I blew up a guinea pig”

  33. Debbie says:

    Was there Taxidermy involved??

  34. ScoutC says:

Who in heaven’s name would tie a bandana around the neck of a capybara? Oh—maybe Jeremy from the other day!

  35. Birdie says:

I think he’s kinda cute, in an awkward kinda way 🙂

  36. M.G. says:

Do you think the guinea pigs are terrified of their giant cousin? You’d have to keep them apart to prevent the little things from getting squashed!

  37. LoveThisSite says:

I would fall into a dead faint if I saw that in person.

  38. LainTexas says:

I thought capybaras were endangered or threatened or something. Is it legal — or wise — to keep one as a household pet?

  39. Laura says:

I live in brazil, we here call that a ‘capivara’..
we rather keep them outdoors, though.

  40. sp says:

It is, in fact, a capybara…the worlds largest rodent!

  41. McKevin says:

I think that’s one of them womp rats that Luke Skywalker used to shoot in Beggar’s Canyon back home.

  42. Ben says:

Where’s Westley when you need him?

  43. JerseyPam says:

I am laughing so hard right now, way too funny! I guess rodents do grow that big in New Jersey! Thanks, AFP people.

    • Elliemae says:

Know what you mean. I’ve been laughing so hard, I have tears rolling down my cheeks. Between the giant rodent and the look on the little boy’s face I can’t stop laughing. Oh, the comments about this are hilarious too.

  44. Lori Green says:

ROUSes… I always hoped they existed.

  45. BeQui says:

    That is terrifying.

  46. sully r. says:

    is that caplan the capybara?

  47. Renee says:

    It’s a capybara!

  48. flipking says:

    OMG What is that??!!

  49. Rae says:

    What is that?

  50. Rattrap007 says:

    It that a giant wombat??
