I’m surprised there’s been some question if this is Apple Valley, MN (as opposed to Apple Valley, CA). Clearly the lack of tans on any of these children is an indication they haven’t seen sunlight in months. Interestingly enough, I really thought the two boys were wearing wrestling unitards (or whatever they call those ugly things) at first, which in my mind explained the short shorts. I graduated from AVHS in ’82 and I don’t remember the boys’ basketball shorts being that short.
“Ahh, wait I think I just pooped. …Yep, that’s poop.”
Oh my god that’s my high school. AMAZING. Class of ’05! And super awkward photo. Haha.
good ole avhs
Who could miss the AVHS on that horrible gold uniform. Go Eagles!!!! Class of ’96. Thanks for sharing Jo and yes this photo is awkward. I’m sure I have plenty of bad photos from high school too.
Is that Ashton Kutcher in the middle?
Quick…….pass the ball to the wrestler on the right…..he in turn will grapple the ball to the plush blue carpet, rolling it to the kid wearing the over-sized Foot Locker jersey allowing a 2-point shot to the imaginary basket for the Win !!!
Don’t look at the camera. It’s only a family portrait.
No wonder the girl is looking to pass – the ref has her cornered too.
I think the gold team could use a little better spacing on offense.
Can anyone say MATCHING SCRUNCHIE? Talk about being dressed your best…
in this age of males terrified of being turned in for paedophilia etc…. that girl reminds me of my daughter when she was around 13, I want to hug her till her head pops off! SO CUTE!!!
bless you esackman! I was feeling like some pervy weirdo because that boy’s unfettered junk was the very 1st thing I noticed.
Ha, that was what I thought was the awkward part of this photo, lol.
The most awkward thing about this photo, and I can see why no one has mentioned this, is with shorts that short, the boy in white should be wearing some sort of proper athletic support. Which, obviously, he is not wearing.
I’ve been assured it was just an unfortunate result of awkward fitting shorts, not what you think it is.
Thank goodness, Jo. It is not what I thought I was, because it certainly looks like what I thought it was.
hahahahahahaha
It looks like the girl is about to do the robot.
I don’t get the title. Can anyone explain?
D is for Defense, as in the brothers are using a strong defense against their sister.
Wacky Minnesotans.
And, I am guessing the short boys basketball shorts were the style, what, 15+ years ago when the picture was taken? So, does Coolcat know our Ashton Kutcher?
It’s almost 20 years old. He says they were so short because they didn’t have money for new uniforms on his team, so they just got what they got.
And I don’t think so…
I feel kind of bad for the kid who’s the ref. In my family, being the ref signifies no body wants you on their team….
Is the kid in the white uniform rockin Avia High Tops???????? Please say it aint so Joe!!!!!!!!!
My husband(the kid in white) and I sent this in because I said it was awkward, he said it wasn’t and we needed a tie-breaker. He still doesn’t think it is, but as much as I love my in-laws, this is definitely awkward. Sorry guys! Love you!
I’m cracking up. Jo, what year did your husband graduate from AVHS? I’m class of ’95. Good ol’ Minnesota.
He didn’t go there, but his sister did for a while. She may have been in your class…
Yes… you are right, by a landslide ! It’s really not even close.
Not awkward? No basketball hoop, a blue curtain, fakey hand moves — yeah, I thought an actual basketball game just happened to break out in the photo studio.
Jo,
Is that you in the picture? Were you high school sweethearts?
Nope, that’s my sister-in-law and my brothers-in-law. I didn’t meet him until his older, less lanky years. LOL
It pains me to think that your hubby is thinking, “There is not a more natural-looking photo of disinterested siblings playing basketball on a velveteen court anywhere in the world.”
cracking up now!!!!
This is AWESOME! I prefer to think us kids from Rosemount weren’t awkward.
Fun to see photos of kids from my area. Thanks for sharing!
They seem to all be looking in one direction, but it’s not the ball they’re looking at.
The White Shadows!
Who let the wrestler onto the basketball court?
These kids got all gussied up in all their finery and posed for this shot? Worse, someone thought it was a good idea.
Let the girl make her shot, ya bunch of bullies!
I guess wherever this game is played there are three baskets on the floor for each team to brick it.
Basketball Jones, I got a Basketball Jones
Got a Basketball Jones, oh baby, oo-oo-ooooo…..
Great Cheech and Chong Reference….:)
I hope that ref is calling a foul. If anything qualifies, it’s this picture!
The tall kid looks like a young Ashton Kutcher.
You are so right!
OMG, You’re right1
that was my first thought too!
Who wears short shorts? We wear short shorts.
ahahaha….oh crap, now that’s gonna be stuck in my head all night
Apple Valley! (Okanagan, right?)
Minnesota
Very awkward that the boys’ shorts are shorter than the girl’s.
Is it just me being neurotic, or does it bug anyone else that the “ref’s” whistle appears to be upside down? Seriously, you go to all this trouble to stage a sweet b-ball game, and you can’t get the whistle right?? Sheesh. What’s WRONG with people??
Ohhh, yeah….. good eye!
Melissa 2
When I was that kid’s age, that’s how I held a whistle. Not sure when I learned better…
No problem with the upside down whistle…..he INhales anyway.
DOHH!
LAME!!! What were the parents thinking??? Why spend the money if you can’t see their faces???? If they’re going to do the photog thing, just go to an actual court.
Did I say LAME??? Why studio shot a “fake” BBall play????
this was my thought, too. you can’t see any of their faces clearly. what a rip!
The kids are hiding their faces in shaaaammme.
ha ha ha!
At LEAST make the backdrop look like a basketball court!
Why are their shorts SSSSOOOOOO Shrort??? The girls shorts are longer than the boys. Now THAT’S Awkward!!
Why is everybody going on about how short the shorts are? That’s the way a basketball uniform looked before the hip-hop era arrived and “shorts” started extending down an inch above the ankle and the waist went down around your knees. Is everybody here about 15 years old or something? Learn your shorts history already.
LMAO @ “shorts history”
Lmao @ “short history” too…..(even though he/she is correct on the short history)
Yes! Fashion comes and goes-even in the sports world.
LOL! Someone just posted a pic of me on facebook & captioned that I couldn’t find shorts any shorter than that? Additional comments on Shorts History & singing the Nair Shorts Shorts song helped us all remember…
amen! i remember the days when shorts were short. you youngsters just check out that Shorts History book.
That’s why I stopped watching basketball. Back in the day, the guys looked good in their little shorts.
Yep. I quit watching basketball about that time, too.
what i find awkward is that the kid in the middle has short shorts than his sister…
This one is DEFINITELY not staged! ;-D
I thought it was photoshopped.
Why do parents do this to their children? If you must see them in a basketball uniform, take a candid picture of them while they actually play basketball! Studio shots like this are so… (say it with me) … awkward.
((saying it with you)) “Awkward”
In a falsetto voice of course.
Right…In my family, if the youngest brother was the ref, he’d be pounded if he didn’t rule for the kid with the most might.
where’s mom and dad?
Yeah, that’s definitely awkward.
As the principal of AVHS, I don’t think I have ever seen better looking old sports wear!
Hey! You really are the principal of AVHS! That’s cool you visit this website! haha
ya when i saw this i was lik. uh what? does that say apple valley?i practically live there, im a 2010 grad from lakeville north
Mr. Degenaar,
I lost my mind when I saw the Apple Valley logo in this photo, so you can imagine what happened to my brain when I saw your post. So. Awesome.
AVHS Alum
As a former AVHS bball player (number 24 too!) it was awesome to see this photo. Thanks!
Is this Apple Valley, Minnesota?
haha best picture ever!!
Mr. Degennar is the best!!
Apple Valley Minnesota?
Yep, that’s AVHS, MN. Grew up in that city. Didn’t Mr. D teach back at Scott Highlands or something ages ago?
