The Ice Storm - Behind The Awkwardness

“My grandparents immigrated to the U.S. from Switzerland. On a family trip back to their homeland, they posed for this photo in front of a glacier. Armed with ice picks and standing in the arms of a stranger dressed in a polar bear suit, the photo leaves just one question: What do polar bears have to do with Switzerland?”

Hahaha oh yes … the Swiss grandparents. I have a set of my own … they just yell at me and tell me I look gruesome instead of shoving me at weirdos dressed as bears. :(

  2. alisotom says:

what do you get when you cross a golfer with curtains from a motorhome? those pink pants!

  3. Elle says:

Hmmm I shall re-title this to “Furries… A Family Affair”. Or “Death To Smoochy Part Deux”.. I’ve not decided yet.

  4. peter says:

how did the polar bear from the Dharma Initiative get to Switzerland?

  5. Bernardo says:

It puts the bear in the basket or else it gets the pick again…

  6. Easter Bunny says:

Hey! It’s Ralph from ‘A Christmas Story’ :)

  7. Rattrap007 says:

Is it me or does the kid in the glasses totally look like a young Adam Savage from Mythbusters?

  8. John M says:

I wonder if the person in the polar bear costume smiles when someone takes a picture??

  9. ValC says:

“You’ll pick your eye out kid.” ;)

  10. Wolfman says:

And dad thought ‘seeing as we’re going into snow and ice, I’ll just wear my smart tweed jacket’ . Nothing strange about that.

  11. Phil K says:

As dr. jones began his family trip to the center of the earth. He realized he was being followed… Something was wrong… VERY wrong.!

  12. AndrewT says:

    Geek joke:
What’s a polar bear? A rectangular bear after a coordinate transform.

  13. ScoutC says:

LOVE the smile on the large polar bear. He must be enjoying a vacation in Switzerland, too. Love the scarf nearly as much as the bear. If only Grandma had put her chiffon scarf on HIM!

  14. josh says:

is that the kid from “A Christmas Story” it really looks like him

  15. Jonathan says:

    1) No one has mentioned the girl’s pants yet, this is what happens when you cross Barbie with a golfer.
    2) Is that a third bear on the girl’s shoulder or is it some sort of weird growth?

  16. nowunyouno says:

The ice picks are in case the dude in the bear suit gets frisky…

  17. M3 says:

Can everyone say ” Jungfraujoch ” I was there a few months ago ( mountain / glacier next to the Elgar ) I think they had a polar bear ice sculptue along with the squirrel looking for his nuts from the “Ice Age” movie. I wish they had this polar bear in costume though, I probably would have gotten a similar awkward pic like this one lol :)

  18. thescousewife says:

Man, is that awesome! I love everything about this. Does the boy wearing the green jacket have a European man purse? If so, Yay!

    • emcd says:

Unfortunately, I believe the suspected european man purse may be a binoculars case. You never know when you might need a close up view of, well, ice.

  19. Troubadour says:

OMG! My family has the SAME picture! Ours was taken in 1986 when we went to visit my mom’s family in Switzerland! :)

  20. Lilly says:

    HILARIOUS!! I can’t stop laughing!

  21. mugabo says:

    *ice axe.

  22. Rachel says:

Whats Ralphie from A Christmas Story doing there?

  23. mollytov says:

The kid on the right looks just like Ralphie from A Christmas Story doesn’t he? Only thing missing is the bunny suit.

    • esackman says:

They wanted the bunny suit, but the day they were there, it was at the cleaners; therefore, they were reduced to their second choice: the polar bear suit.

  24. Stacey says:

“The photo just leaves one question”??!!???

  25. Anon says:

    un-bear-ably awkward!!

  26. Missie says:

I first thought the boy in green was holding a gun. I wondered why the polar bear would make himself such an easy target, and why he would want to fake-kill the baby polar bear the brother has!

  27. Alan says:

    I see 2 bears…must be bipolar.
