Behind The Awkwardness: Seeing Is Believing

August 29th, 2011

“This miraculous photo is of my darling dear mother, in the 80′s, with what is obviously a cutout of the great Thomas Sullivan Magnum. The best part of this photo is the glasses, but, the second best part is the fact that my mom refuses to admit that it is a cutout. She still thinks she met Tom Selleck.”

I often wonder why people wore such face swollowing glasses in the 80s.

  2. HairSlayer says:

Also if that were a cut out why do his clothes move? He had a shadow if you look hard enough and it also looks he has muscles under the jacket. Mate this really isn’t a cut out and the mom legitimately met him lol

    • Mommy says:

If you see his clothes moving, you should probably cut back on the booze. And yes, shadows do photograph. Even in photos of photos.

  3. HairSlayer says:

At first glance I honest to God didn’t think he was a cut-out. I love how excited this women is. I bet she would be cool to hang with. I think my step mom and my grandma would have gone crazy too if they got to hang with a cut-out of that man. My grandma still has his poster that was recalled. And it was either him or Burt Renyolds that kissed my step mom on the cheek.

  4. Jasper says:

    I think this is completely hilarious! {hugs cutout of Alice}

  5. Bele75 says:

LOLOLOL!!!! This was MY Mom in the 80′s!!! She would have passed out if given the opportunity to get a picture with “Flat Magnum.” AND………she also would never admit that he was cardboard!!! LOL!! :)

  6. Cindy says:

I think I would have liked your mom- she was probably a very funny lady!

  7. Austin Powers says:

That’s not you mom, baby. That’s a man.

  8. Rae says:

That could be my mother. Seriously.

  9. Robert says:

Tom Selleck has this same picture and tells everyone he met Dee Snider from Twisted Sister!

  10. Lynn Hubbard says:

I just had my picture taken with George Washington. He was a bit flat but still awesome!!!!!

  11. dia says:

    your mom is so fabulous

  12. Kron says:

I love how she’s touching his cardboard chest hair. You go, girl!

  13. Colleen says:

I’ll bet her first-born that she only very recently (if at all) gave up those glasses and earrings!

  14. Jack says:

    Remember Elaine’s Christmas card “nip”?

  15. megan says:

Wow that cut out looks VERY real

  16. andi in nc says:

This is awesome on so many levels!

  17. Karen says:

Is NO ONE going to claim ‘Photoshop’? : )

  18. Joyce says:

The fact that she casts a shadow and he doesn’t is a dead giveaway…or maybe he’s just the devil? I love the whole Linda Richman look!

  19. Suki says:

I want my photo taken with Cardboard Selleck too. love the earrings everything was big in the 80s.

  20. Kim says:

OMG! I never should have come here today! Tears rolling down my face!

  21. Morgan says:

Hey, it looks pretty real at first glance.

  22. Penny Diamond says:

Mom looks SO delighted to just be there at all. Wow – if we could all be that happy with something so simple as a cutout at a Sears studio with a phony palms background.

  23. pj says:

Poor Tom looks like he is leaning a little as if he has wind

  24. meri says:

She not only met him, she ran her fingers through his chest hair! Way to go 80′s Mom!

  25. The Beeb says:

    I love your mom already!

  26. nellypetty says:

She obviously couldn’t see through those glasses very well.

  27. Spacecopter says:

Those glasses are just plain rad. They don’t make frames like they used to. Now it’s all about small and unintrusive. I want some frames that will leave a mark on the bridge of the nose like in 1993! (Probably the last year they were made that way.)

  28. Shellyshell says:

Looks good to me! I would never have realized he was cardboard!

  29. KenG says:

    *awkweird*

  30. Lynne says:

Her earrings and ‘do are pretty bitchin’, too!

  31. SeƱor Loco says:

Five bucks says the pendant at the end of that gold chain he’s wearing is his zodiac sign.

  32. T says:

Had I not been told it was a cut out It would have taken me a while to figure it out! If I was in this photo I may have thought I met Tom Selleck as well. :)

  33. jess says:

I knew someone who thought that Magnum PI was actually pronounced Magnumpi…I’ve never been able to call it Magnum PI since.

  34. LV says:

I’m inclined to give Mom the benefit of the doubt here. Look at the way the shadow of her hand ripples against the folds of his shirt. If it were a cut-out it would be a flat shadow. On the other hand, that doesn’t mean he wasn’t pickled and propped up…

  35. matnkat5 says:

At first glance, I totally thought that was Tom Selleck in the “flesh”. And really the only thing terribly awkward about the picture is the earrings and the glasses, boy the 80′s really were excessive. I think the picture is funny, when I first looked at it, Tom Selleck looked like he was tolerating a fan, so that’s funny!!

  36. Rick says:

The cutout looks pretty real to me … I had to check it a couple of times before I was convinced that it was not real. Of course, the way she’s pawing his chest, it would have been AWKWARD if that was a real Tom ….

  37. diane says:

I think the most awkward thing about this photo has to be the awesome earrings!

  38. Carol says:

haha they make a good couple

  39. natedawg says:

For as hairy as his chest is it felt remarkably smooth.

  40. James says:

    …And boy, was he THIN!

  41. Kurtis says:

Critics: “Selleck’s performance in this picture was surprisingly one-dimensional.”

  42. cocamojoe says:

I was Tom Selleck for Halloween two-years ago.

  43. Rattrap007 says:

Cut out Tom looks creeped out.
