I can totally relate. My in-laws came in the room within a half hour of the birth camera in hand and my husband and I really were not ready or in the mood. We wanted time to breath and bond with our baby. They were from the era of Mom being knocked out during the birth and Dad not being involved at all. So I forgive them.I absolutely love the expression on this Dad’s face though!
There are hospital nurses that take pics of newborns on THEIR time rather than wait for the parents or even the infant to be ready, my friend ran into that issue when her son was born. Plus we don’t know the circumstances of the birth itself which could have left her in a less than photogenic mood. They could be pissed off at the lack of consideration of the photographer. just a thought.
I’m pretty sure that’s my cousin and her husband. Cuz was in a pretty bad mood when I went and saw her in the hospital after her second kid was born, she looked pretty much like this…
Wow – this couple looks too tired to be happy. Mom has a bp cup and an IV, so this wasn’t an easy labour. Dad probably went through so many emotions that he needs a good cry or a good drink to sort himself out. Baby looks like s/he is hungry.. I have a shot like this after each of my kids; everyone looks nasty in my pictures, but I cherish them.
It’s standard procedure for every woman to have a BP cuff and IV for a hospital birth. There’s more to this story, but maybe not necessarily because it was difficult.
They were expecting a girl, painted the nursery pink, bought a pink car seat, hair bows, all pink and purple clothing. And they had a boy. Now they’re thinking about all that stuff they have to return and the repainting that Dad has to do. And…they are looking at the doctor who assured them it was a girl.
This photo actually makes me glad that we did not get a family photo until my first son was over two weeks old. Thank you AFP for taking away a regret!!
Gotta be the mother-in-law taking the picture while telling “Dad” how to hold the baby… daughter is annoyed her mother’s even there and through it all the baby is wailing! Been there. Done that!
I agree! I’m also inclined to think this photo may not have been taken on a digital camera. Back in the day you couldn’t approve every photo immediately. Very likely an in-law failed to count to three before capturing this image.
People shouldn’t forget that this is an AWKWARD photo. I imagine that this happy family has albums full of happy, non-awkward photos.
My daughter had a baby a month ago after 15 hrs. of labor and the first thing my proud husband did when we got to go see him (within 30 minutes of birth) was whip out the camera. He, my son-in-law and I had been up since 1 in the morning when her water broke so needless to say none of us were at our best. Believe me, the baby was the cleanest looking one in the room! My daughter and I saw him aiming that thing at us and we said in unison “NO!” Bless his heart, he was so proud he just didn’t think. I agree. I bet that’s what happened here. Save the blessed event pics for when everyone’s had some rest and a nice, long shower.
I can totally relate– I bet it is a clueless relative bugging them for a first family picture. Mom’s exhausted after a long labor, dad’s exhausted from listening to mom yell at him how her pain is “all his fault,” Yeah… this picture could have been me last year……
dad looks exhausted and ROASTING hot in there. what kind of idiot would capture a memory like that though? ick… just pictures of baby til parents can pull a smile together
No, the baby is not just smiling, but has already developed a sense of humor that says “Hello World, Here I am! Why are you guys so tired? I only had nine months of time to grow to be your adorable child! Been working hard at it!” Of course, I understand that the parents are majorly sleep deprived at this point and will be for quite some time. But it still looks to me that baby is laughing in dods face!
I think most ppl on this site have never gone through the childbirth ordeal. We went about 48 hours with no sleep and lots of pain. I wish we looked this good in our post-baby pic!
Have you ever given birth? Good grief indeed- My first son was 42 hours of labor, plus I tore and at the end of that I was in no mood for smiling. Dad looks exhausted and sometime overzealous relatives take pictures when your not ready.

“Ya mean, this is all we got out of this deal?”

I cant wait to see the photo when the baby is a teenager
i’ll send one in for them right now.
that way they’ll be prepared to be prepared.
I’m pretty sure that’s my cousin and her husband. Cuz was in a pretty bad mood when I went and saw her in the hospital after her second kid was born, she looked pretty much like this…
Wow, not even a fake smile!
Both of the parents look in shock.
Mother of four here, aunt to 13…that baby is crying, that’s how newborn’s look when they cry.
Dad told Mom after she delivered the baby that *he was tired*
.
Paradise by the dashboard lights wasn’t worth it……..
I might be able to find a smidgeon of humor if a cartoon was being referenced here…..
And the kid is thinking, “Will somebody PLEASE double check my ID bracelet and tell me I don’t have to go home with these people”!?
“Is this it?”
Maybe this wasn’t the best time to bring up the Justin Bieber concert.
lmao..best comment
He thought he was getting a puppy……………
Start saving for therapy now!
I am still laughing so hard I can hardly breathe. This is one of the funnies photos I have ever seen!
What this family need is some nice, deep, relaxing SLEEEEEEP!
“Mom…..please no more pictures!!!!!!!”
Dad..”How come he looks like my brother?” Mom…”Uh….”
love it!

Wow…I would be a little concerned here.
Aww, the first diaper change….
The baby looks terrified! LOLOL! It’s a funny pic…relax people!
Taking a picture is one thing; keeping the picture is another.
and having it displayed publicly is jaw dropping
“She was admitted for a tonsillectomy…”
And a quick scan of that monitor shows dad’s stocks just took a big hit. No wonder neither of them are smiling.

Good one! LOL

why in the world would you take that photo? Let them get some rest and have some bonding time! Insensitive goof!
If momma aint happy…aint no body happy…let’s get this straight from the beginning!
oh man how true…not even funny how true….lol,sad..
American Gothic: the Next Generation.
from the look on his face, you’d think dad just went thru 15 hours of hard labor instead of mom…
maybe they didn’t know they were expecting, like the people on that TLC show!!
Hahaha! I think this is just plain hilarious! Those poor exhausted new parents!
Gotta be the mother-in-law taking the picture while telling “Dad” how to hold the baby… daughter is annoyed her mother’s even there and through it all the baby is wailing! Been there. Done that!
This one gets my vote!
Yep. That was my guess exactly. One of the moms is there. This has nothing to do with the baby and everything to do with the photographer.
I agree! I’m also inclined to think this photo may not have been taken on a digital camera. Back in the day you couldn’t approve every photo immediately. Very likely an in-law failed to count to three before capturing this image.

Jeez, this is really depressing…
They look exhausted….
Exactly.
Why is everyone saying the baby is laughing? It looks to me to have been crying, be crying, and to continue to cry….
Oh happy day!
Wow, at first I thought that their baby had died, by the looks of their expressions. Lord knows I’ve seen my share…my baby was born “sleeping.”
Oh Jessica, I am so sorry for your loss. : ( A good reminder for those of us having a very difficult day with our child.
Baby actually looks grunting
Mom you cannot judge (pain, tired, etc)
dad looks exhausted and ROASTING hot in there. what kind of idiot would capture a memory like that though? ick… just pictures of baby til parents can pull a smile together
At least the baby is smiling. Everyone else look annoyed.

This is the most honest new-baby-and-parents photo I’ve ever seen.
I think most ppl on this site have never gone through the childbirth ordeal. We went about 48 hours with no sleep and lots of pain. I wish we looked this good in our post-baby pic!
“We”?
Yes, we. As both mom and dad had to go through the birth on different levels.
Actually, every single person has gone through this ordeal.
That baby knows it isn’t going to be much fun at the ole homestead tonight.
How sad! But, it looks like the baby is laughting! I’ve never seen a newborn look so happy.
The Smiths, being presented with their hospital bill
Ha ha!
Well, if they don’t want the baby, I’ll take the baby. Good grief!

TMI there Jan….
