Looks to me like elf #1 is trying to seize elf #2 who’s trying to get away as elf #3 readies to bludgeon him with a candy cane. Very frightening indeed.

Everyone else is falling apart, Mom is composed and manages to look great. That’s probably why she kept the picture.
