Garden Of Eden - Behind The Awkwardness

“This photo has it all when it comes to awkward engagement photos. My husband and I were 19 at the time of the photo and I was still a bit rebellious. My dad was paying for the wedding (including the engagement photos) and I seized the opportunity to show him how grown up I was. I was attempting an artistic Garden of Eden which even included my pet python, Merlin. I frantically purchased fake flowers the day of the photo shoot because I was inspired to make the photo more authentic. After our traditional engagement photos, we took our clothes off and tried some alternate poses.  When we got our proofs back, we showed them to my family at my birthday dinner. My grandma screamed, “OH MY GOD!” and I started crying and ran to the car where soon-to-be husband yelled, “Well, what did you expect!?!”

Those were the days, my friend! LOL!

Nothing wrong with this pic, fairly artistic, it’s not porn. If it was a painting people would be seeing it in the art gallery, or museum.

My then-GF and I have a set very similar to this. You won’t be seeing it on THIS site, though. The nudity is not ‘implied.’ 😉

At 19 we think we are so grown up! My scandalous move at 19 was to be the virgin bride and third wife to a man who was 7 yrs older! Today would have been our 20th Anniversary! Ahhh young love!

I think the real reason your Grandma was so freaked out was because she thought you were marrying a man without genitalia! 🙂

This is actually a pretty damn good picture. Not that awkward, in fact, pretty clever. I like how “Adam” leans on “Eve” for comfort, even as she holds the serpent in her hand.

I think what makes this so arresting is Amy’s Madonna-like face and expression (the classic Madonna, not the singer:) Whatever commenter said she was ‘brave to put this on the interwebs” was being a bit snarky…years from now, Amy will look back and say, “Hey, I was beautiful, and this was one kickin’ pic!”

Thanks for the background information. Here is what I think my grandmother would have said upon seeing it, ‘you have a tattoo???’

  15. Julie says:

Well….the story makes this even more awesomely awkward! LOL

Ok, the picture is awkward. But Amy, you are beautiful!

All I can say is Wow! What a story that is! Truly funny and really cool!

Cannot imagine what goes through a photographer’s head when they dream up this kind of shot, especially for an engagement picture. I would have put the python around his neck!

This has always been one of my favorite photos posted on this site. I just have one question. Did grandma ever get over her first reaction to this photo?

  21. Ria says:

Oh my. You have courage putting this up on the interwebs, dear.

  22. Lizzie says:

Your story is priceless! I’m sure that many if not most of us made some kind of “grown up” decision that…well…wasn’t so grown up. Thanks for having the sense of humor & courage to share your “moment of brillience” with the rest of us! What a hoot!

I can’t stop looking. what is wrong with me?????

    • BJ19 says:

Me neither, though exactly why it is escapes me. It’s like an unvarnished version of a painting from the Renaissance era? I guess those Adam/Eve images play much better as paintings than real-life photos… Awkward with a capital A.

Groom-to-be is clearly not into this, hiding face in her arms.
