I didn’t know it would turn into a night I would never forget. I don’t know if it was the manliness in his chest hair or the curls rolling down his shoulders, but as the chorus to “Edge of Seventeen” played and our glances met, a shiver ran through me that even my shoulder pads felt. In the morning, together in his small, twelfth story studio apartment dedicated to his denim art, we took each others’ portraits to always have and remember.
But, of course, I could not say that to my questioning teenager looking for a weekend handout. Instead I would give a small, special smile and with a slight shine in my eye say, “Someone I once knew.”
