Behind The Awkwardness

Anatomy Of A Bouquet Catch

“In the last 6 years, I have caught the bouquet at almost every wedding I’ve attended. So much so that I forget how many I’ve actually caught but can more easily remember how many I haven’t caught (only 3, to be exact.) And on more than one occasion, I’ve snatched it out of the hands of the bride’s only sister… This photo captures not the exception, but rather the norm.”

White Wedding

“My parents wedding in the early 60s. My mother and aunt both wore pan-stick makeup and judging by these pictures you can see why they don’t make it anymore!”

Double Vision

“The year was 1976. My mom had just come home with that fabulous perm, and, apparently, I asked to have the same done to my hair.  I was three or four at the time, so I’ll have to take her word on that.  I do, however remember the traumatic experience of having that fro cut off several days after this picture was taken, because I played in a sandbox too emphatically and my mother couldn’t comb through the tangled, sandy mess!  This picture will always make me smile (while shaking my head).  It shows just how tiny our immediate family was – just me and my mom, with dad behind the camera at his studio. It’s goofy, sure, but back then, it was just ‘us’.

K.O.

“This is my older sister (by 12 years) and my father. She got boxing gloves for Christmas and thought it would be a good idea to challenge our father. From the picture, you can tell, it wasn’t such a good idea.”

Overwater

“At 9 years old, I learned to waterski. Being short, I got a lot of spray in the face. Goggles seemed like a good idea at the time.”

Left Out

“I was so tired of my little sister following me around and having to be in every picture I was in – she just had to be the center of attention. This time my mom told me (in the red dress) and my friend while playing dress up to pose for a picture and I was not going to let my sister be in it. I held the door closed (notice my devilish smile) so she could not come outside in the picture. My mom didn’t even notice this until she got the picture developed. And I saw my little sister got her way, she was still in the picture.”

Fun Guy

“At a recent family gathering, everyone was told to check out the puff-ball mushroom growing in the backyard. Cousin Paul took the admiration one step further, and quite accurately re-created a late-70s senior portrait.”

Fun In The Sun

“On holidays in Sydney , Australia. Most people think Bondi Beach is fairly spectacular ; sun, surf and beautiful people, not our Oisin!”

The No Smile

“For several years I purposely refused to smile on photo day and the photographers would find artistic ways to present my photos to my mother.”
