Behind The Awkwardness

Falling Slowly

“My daughter and I had been holding hands and she was leaning away from me and our photographer caught the perfect moment!  So the rest of us are looking fabulous while my 2 year old is crashing into the pavement!”

The Final Frontier

“My daughter’s father gave his whole family space outfits for Christmas in hopes to get the family together for a photo session. I thought it was the oddest idea ever.”

Roller Derby

“This photo was taken in the Fall of 1966. My Dad just returned from a hunting trip with the hide & antlers of his prized 5 point bull elk. It was Saturday night and my older sister & I just had our hair rolled for church the next morning. I was obviously thrilled to have my picture taken with the stupid elk and rollers in my hair.”

Replica

“My brother and sister-in-law got married about 17 years ago and my kids were asked to be in their wedding party… my son was the ring bearer, my oldest daughter was a junior bridesmaid and my youngest daughter was dressed in a miniature replica of the bride’s gown. In this family photo, we look like a crazy family that just married off our two youngest children, my older daughter looks like she has one oddly placed prosthetic leg, and I’m rocking some sweet shoulder pads.”

Urban Cowboy

“This was one of my most awkward years, early 80’s when Urban Cowboy was blowing up at the box office.  My school decided that spring photos would be exactly that. Well I am not sure if that was the greatest of ideas, but its given my family, facebook and now hopefully AFP plenty more laughs!!!”

Interview With A Vampire

“Back in the early 1970’s my crazy mother loved having big, over the top Halloween parties.  At this one, she rented a coffin from a funeral home and laid in it for hours while my friends came to visit her.  I think she was loaded personally.  To this day, people remember her for this party!”

Granny’s Got A Gun

“In 2010, we sent you this spunky picture of our sweet Grandma Nadine (taken years earlier). We are saying goodbye to this beautiful woman on Tuesday, but are forever grateful to AFP for memorializing her spunky attitude on your board game. She got a kick out of being a part of the AFP family! Thanks for sharing our fun memories!”

We are sending our love to Lisa and to her legendary Grandma. Her spirit and spunk in this photo will live on forever.

Sugar Don’t Bite

“This is my sister’s dance class from approximately 1989. Although there are so many funny elements to this photo, nothing quite trumps the stud in the back.”

Angels & Demons

“This was shot by a professional photographer when my wife was expecting our second baby. It is common in China to have such photo shooting for any important family time. But the photographer did not expect me to act as a demon behind my wife.”

Gutterball

“At the time of this photo, my family lived in a small town off a busy highway. My little sister was ever wandering off, wherever we went; and she had a tendency to put everything in her mouth. We needed a solution to keep her in sight and out of trouble, while we were outside doing yard work. The only thing we had was baling twine, which we kept tied to the gutter. We had to put her on her “leash” often, which makes her adult preference for bondage rather… awkward.”
