Behind The Awkwardness

Behind The Awkwardness: The Grind

“My mother was usually creative decided to make us an “organ grinder and his monkey”. Inside the organ grinder was a tape recorder with a tape of marching band music. As you can see my jerk brother was reminding me to stay close to him at all times….blah blah blah. I HATED that costume and did not want to wear it…….in the end at least we got a ton of full size candy bars than the kids with the garbage bag costumes and masks.”

The Groceries

“Having an identical twin sister growing up in a house without a whole lot of money could be interesting at times, especially when my Mom was feeling a little crafty. She saw something on tv about making costumes out of stuff you have around your kitchen, so she collected receipts, coupons, paper bags and cracker boxes. She then cut the cracker boxes into masks and cut arm holes in the bags. She taped everything on, (not stapled or glued)…taped! We kept ripping and falling apart with every step we took on our class parade. The teacher had to follow us around with more rolls of tape while we walked. My sis and I got upset because the parents kept saying, “oh my gosh! Look at the garbage bags!”

Beware Of Crocs

“My dad was taking a photo of my husband pushing our daughter on the swing, and just at the moment he clicked the shutter a kid walked in front of her and BAM. For the record: After a few minutes of crying he was fine, and the kid’s mom thought this photo was so funny that she had my dad share it with her so she could send it to her relatives. Upon seeing the photo, a friend of ours commented, “Get used to it, kid. Girls are going to be kicking you in the face for the rest of your life….”

Dump Truck

“My 10-month-old was sitting in the Tonka truck and my 2-year-old wanted sit in it with him but wouldn’t fit. So I put the 2-year-old on the back of it and both boys were so cute and smiley and happy that I ran to get the camera. As I was focusing and they were both still smiling. I clicked the shutter and then both boys went toppling backwards. My 2-year-old exclaimed, “mmmKAY!” (I’m OK!) and the baby let out a single fuss. I laughed uncontrollably when I saw the picture. My husband thought it made quite the awkward family photo.”

Grandpa George

“My Grandpa George is…..well…quite the show stopper. We never had a normal family or photo for that matter. When the family would all get together, we could always count on Grandpa George to make us laugh. He would get so hammered he would disappear into his bedroom for a half hour and either the Wolfman, Dracula, or Zorro would come out and chase us around the house! We had a blast. Im in this picture, but my granny is blocking me. You can tell by the smiles on our faces we didn’t care who thought we were crazy… we had the BEST grandpa in the whole world!”

Who Likes Short Shorts?

“This is a photo of my dad back in 84 or 85. Those were one of his many pairs of daisy dukes. Both him and my grandpa had a matching pair of ones with rainbows on the sides. I was always embarrassed when they would attempt to take me out in public while they were wearing them.”

No Thanks

“This is one of my wedding pictures. The photographer had asked my husband to kiss my neck while my mom was five feet away. As you can see, our reaction was caught on camera.”

Plaidoon

“This was a family picture of my siblings and I taken a few years ago. I decided it would be a good idea to wear plaid and my brothers decided to follow suit. My sister however, not having plaid, raged.”

Baby Powder

“This is a favorite early photo of my daughters after a strange incident involving baby powder. Their future personalities shine through.”

The Twiggle

“This is my lovely family and myself. My sister was holding me and trying to wiggle out her tooth with her lips.”
