Behind The Awkwardness

Insane Clown Posse

“This is my husband and his younger brother dressed as clowns.  Their Mother (my Mother-in-law) decided that for Mother’s Day one year that she would dress her 2 sons as clowns and have their portraits taken.  So, she proceeded to dress them up in homemade outfits and her own makeup.  On the way to Sears, the younger brother was crying hysterically and that is why he is not a “happy clown,” and his face is smeared.  I have this picture hanging in our hallway of our home just to remind myself that I am now a part of a dysfunctional but awesome family! Now we have two sons together ages 3 and 4… question is, should I carry on the tradition?”

Jungle John

“Back in 95, a traveling zookeeper (Jungle John) came to my cousin’s birthday party and all the kids took pictures with him and his snake. Needless to say, I wasn’t into it. And I’m afraid of snakes and men in safari hats to this day.”

Public Admirer

“That’s my little sister in the middle, it was her 4th birthday party. The boy behind her was her first stalker. When we moved away the next year,  he told her as soon as he was old enough to drive he was coming for her with a moving truck to bring her back.”

The Air Below

“As a professional photographer, I always hoped never to take a photo that would be fit for this site. So much for hope.”

Horns

“It was our grandparents’ 60th wedding anniversary – circa 1967. I especially remember the itchy taffeta dress but mostly being pulled from my dancing in the aisles to take this picture. On the right, my sister with the “halo” bow & cake behind her … obedient, stand here, arms down, smile, okay, yes. Me with the devil horn candles behind me … WTF? Can I leave now? We are pretty sure our Mom taped our bangs to our foreheads and cut away. Had my parents understood the prophetic sign that I would be rebellious they may have just given me away that day.”

Summer Vacation

“That’s me and my cousin Alex at the age of about 8 years old at the Marquette Ore Mine. This photo was taken on one of our many summer visits to my grandmother’s home in Michigan.  Poor Grandma was running out of fun activities for us to do during these long summer visits.”

The Hangover

“It was 1978 and my parents used to party every Saturday night… even if it was the night before Easter.”

Big Bunny

“I am The Overgrown Easter Bunny.  It was 1984, I was 10 years old.  My grandfather insisted that I dress up like the Easter Bunny for my younger cousins and siblings.  This photo shows me with my mom, dad, sister and brother.  I was mortified, though my brother is the one emoting how I was feeling inside.”

Dunk

“This is a photo of me from when I played basketball in second grade. My mom liked to put my hair in bows to match my uniform and I had really bad eye sight.”

Rabbit Trick

“This is a photo of me and my cousin about ten years ago. I was about eleven, a giant awkward thing who had yet to get braces. For some reason, while walking around at the mall my mother and aunt spontaneously thought it would be a grand idea to force us to get easter pictures. The “photographer” put us in half a bunny carcass and bunny ears, and voila!”
