Behind The Awkwardness

Giggle Belly - Behind The Awkwardness

Giggle Belly

“My family used to play Giggle Belly.  You start by laying with your head on someones stomach.  When everyone is in place the first person says ‘ha’, the person on their stomach says ‘ha, ha’ and so on.  I am in the teal sweater with the acid washed jeans and 1990’s glasses.”

Mask - Behind The Awkwardness

Mask

“This was taken back in 1971 when I was about 18 months old. My grandmother had one of our cousins dress up as Santa to surprise me and my aunt (who is holding me). I’m not sure what happened to Santa on the way over…..looks like he was run over by one of his reindeer.”

Red Alert - Behind The Awkwardness

Red Alert

“My mother always dressed my brothers and I alike, but one Christmas, she made everyone do it.  This is the result.  I’m the one who is not smiling because I’m pretty sure I just received a “talking to” for my objection to the madness.”

Merry Christmas Baby - Babies

Merry Christmas Baby

“This is my brother and I at Christmas, 1965. I was only 6 months old and my brother obviously thought I was annoying, if not repulsive.”

Chocolate Baby - Babies

Chocolate Baby

“Discovered that one digitizing my grandparents slides. Must have been around the late 1960s. We are not certain about what happend prior to this photo been taken. Our hypothesis: The girl stole and eat the boys chocolate and got into trouble for doing so. Result: Girl sad, boy sad. We’ll never truly know, but this is just epic. It makes me laugh every time I look at it.”

Glamour Boy - Behind The Awkwardness

Glamour Boy

“We have so many photos and Christmas cards in our family that would earn an Awkward Family Photo award. This is another one of my crazy dad’s funny Christmas cards back when Glamour shots were popular (if they ever really were).”

The Bouquet Squat - Behind The Awkwardness

The Bouquet Squat

“It was time for the bouquet toss, and after too much liquid courage… the maid of honor began to hike her dress up, and assume an athletic squat in hopes to catch the bride’s bouquet. The hiking and squatting created quite an audience of onlookers. Normally, I tend to hide my camera during moments like these. But the awkwardness was just too much! I had to take this photo. Needless to say, the maid of honor did NOT catch the coveted bouquet. But she sure had fun trying!”

Christmas Jazz Hand - Behind The Awkwardness

Christmas Jazz Hand

“The infamous Christmas photo shoot of 1984.  Dad’s short-shorts and high socks highlighted his fashion-forward attitude and athleticism; my sister’s cheerleading perfection revealed her vow to never look bad in any photo- ever, and my single jazz hand stance complete this Awkward Family Christmas Card from nearly 30 years ago.”
