Behind The Awkwardness

Make A Wish

“Even a 4 year-old knows there’s no “winging it” with birthday candles. This is my brother’s birthday. My mom had obviously forgotten the candles and had instead snapped Christmas taper candles in half.”

Happy Labor Day from AFP!

“I worked at a cub scout camp that had a theme of Star Wars. Some of my co-workers and I had a picture taken together. The older guy is a falconer, and we used the raven at camp a lot. To me, this picture makes so much sense, but to anybody else, there are three teenagers surrounding an older man holding a raven, and we’re all dressed as Jedi. Weird.”

Women In Black

“This was my sister and mom and I in a dance recital… as ADULTS! We were the Men-In-Black and Mom must have been an alien belly-dancer.”

Happy Mother’s Day

“I’m the pissed-off one dressed in high style 80’s neon on the far right, two feet away from Mom and my grandmother who clearly think the occasion warrants a bit more elegance than I do. (And yes, it really was mother’s day).”

School Ties

“As was tradition in our family, we were taking our first day of school photos.  The cat, Cuddles, had been posing with us in some of our earlier shots and then ran off.  I was whining because I wanted to have the cat in the pictures.  My brother, intolerant of my whining, punched me and told me to shut up.  This made me cry and I started crying harder when I realized my mom was still taking pictures.”

Haunted House

“This is me somewhere around 1981-82 with a demon at a local haunted house that ran every year. I was addicted to horror movies as a kid (and still am) so whenever the haunted house started up, I’d beg my mom let me to go in with the lights off.  After an endless amount of badgering, she finally let me go through in the dark. Expecting me to come running back out screaming, she stayed by the entrance only to see me come bouncing out the exit with a huge smile on my face. To commemorate this, she let me pose for a picture with the demon. As you can see, my smile refused to fade even a little bit and I was probably more than a little overdressed for the occasion.”

Backseat Driver

“My dad loved motorcycles. This is him on his Yamaha with me in back and my 2 year old brother bungee corded to the seatback.”

Through The Looking Glass 2

“This is photo of me on my wedding day before the ceremony started. The photographer told me to pretend I was looking out the window to see if my soon to be husband had arrived. I always thought it was such a goofy picture because I couldn’t see a thing out that stained glass window.”

Call Waiting

“After the wedding, my husband’s friends drove to the reception and started calling repeatedly after about 10 minutes while we were trying to take the pictures. January in Nashville was cold – 19 degrees! It was cold, and we kept having to stop so he could answer the phone. Needless to say, after about the 3rd phone call, I had enough! (Note the fist.)”

Behind The Awkwardness: Push

“I really didn’t want my sister in this picture…so I pushed her out at the last second. Can you spot her?”
