Behind The Awkwardness

Small Wonder

“This is a photo of me and the robot I made when I was in the 3rd grade. Who knew I could create a great work of engineering at such as young age? This photo is just one example of the intense awkward stage I went through – please note: lack of smile, random lawnchair in the obvious cold weather, bright blue glasses…and yeah, that robot.”

The Throne

“My uncle decided that my grandfather spent too much time in the bathroom. For Christmas, he got him a padded toilet seat so he would be more comfortable. Super awkward.”

I Ain’t Afraid Of No Ghosts

“I’m the boy in the picture with my family. Apparently, the ghostbusters craze got the best of my mom and she made us walk through the mall in those stupid shirts to get our picture taken. From the look on my sister’s face, I don’t think she was too thrilled with the whole idea either.”

Party Favors

“This is my Great-Aunt, who went to my cousin’s wedding in that pastel track suit with the purse around her neck. This picture was taken right after she was told she could take home the champagne glasses. She fit as many as she could in her hands, but made sure she had room for the leftover champagne.”

The Hangover

It was my 1st birthday and apparently, while my mom brought guests to the door, I licked all the liquor glasses empty. After returning, she saw me falling backwards and passing out. The ambulance medic told her that I had consumed too much alcohol and sat me on the throne. Not too much has changed since then.”

Splash

This is my mom, dad and brother in Sydney. Posing on a bridge, my brother set the camera on timer, and ran back to join my parents. However, he had too much momentum and fell back into the pond.”

The Patriot

“My grandfather is the star of many awkward family photos. Here, he poses pantsless, with a pair of kettlebells, artistically composed at his feet to highlight his lack of pants and booty short spandex. The  flag in the background pretty much says it all: this is AMERICA.”

You’ll Shoot Your Eye Out, Kid

This is my brother and I. I was around nine and he is about 6. Pink shirts and suspenders really? I look like a cross between Ralphie from Christmas Story and a young Larry King.”

The Space Between

“My brother was fussing the whole portrait session, and my parents were getting frustrated as they were just trying to get one decent photo of the family. Finally, they threw their arms in the air and told him to sit where he pleased. It was my brother’s decision to sit off to the side. As you can see from my smirk, I wasn’t upset about it. Considering how odd the picture turned out, I’m surprised my family selected to hang it in our home for all these years.”

The Joker

“In the photo is my grandpa holding me as a baby in 1989. After grandpa retired, he started a side job as a clown, where he’d go to birthday parties and do magic tricks. He also often wore his boxing shorts from his days as a heavyweight boxer at Michigan State. He was dressing upto entertain the grandkids that day, and the boxing/clown combination certainly made for an interesting photo.”
