School Photos

Broken Wings

“This photo is so 90s, I can’t look directly at it without getting eyestrain. I am 13-14 here, so this is about 1992. The carefully-constructed bird’s wing bangs, the big earrings, the dress-over-a-shirt combo… and this was before I knew how to tame my eyebrows, so there’s that, too. The only thing I can be grateful for is that I was not allowed to wear makeup yet. I can only imagine how that would have turned out.

I did not date at all in high school.”

My Mother’s Blood, Sweat, And Tears

“I think I’m somewhere around 10 in this photo, which would put it somewhere in the mid-80s. This hairstyle is the result of curlers left in overnight and a curling iron in the morning, and a lot of my mother’s blood, sweat, and tears. It is little wonder why I had no friends as a child.”

I Should Have Been On Drugs

“This is probably one of the worst school pictures ever. I must have been laughing when he took the picture. But why would my mom send me out like that with my hair like that, knowing that it was picture day? Everyone who sees it asks me, “Were you on drugs?”, my response was “No!”, but I should have been. I am a fairly good looking guy, I promise.”

Something Borrowed

“What goes well with Picture day?  The roach clips I found in my sisters room.”

Why I Despise Button-Downs

“I don’t know what my favorite part of this picture is: the blank stare (I wore glasses and couldn’t see anything), the pulled back hair, my gap-tooth ‘smile,’ or the shirt, buttoned ALLLLLL the way to the top, which features a dog pissing on a fire hydrant. It’s a wonder I had any friends. I’m pretty sure this shirt is the reason I despise wearing button downs.”

Totally 80’s

“I love this photo because there was no doubt in my mind that I looked absolutely awesome that day. This was my favorite look and I rocked it with zero shame. Incidentally, it would be years before a boy actually liked me, but I was too cool to care.”

Permfection

“This is me.  What in the world my mom was thinking when she did this to me, I cannot say.  Between the homespun clothes and the perm gone wrong, I never had a chance.”

Keep Your Eye On The Ball

“My brother threw a ball at my eye when I was 10 years old and it was picture day two weeks later. My eye stayed like this for 4 years. I was also in Special Ed at the time. I think this is why I became a stand-up comic.”

Dad Hair Day

“This is what happens when Mom goes out of town and Dad is responsible for making sure I am ready for picture day at school.”

You Better Smile

“My son wouldn’t smile for a camera. So on this picture day, as I took him to preschool, I told him he’d better smile for the camera. When I came to pick up the photos, the teacher pulled me aside and said that the photographer was in tears, and this was the best he could do. At first, I was a little mad that my son couldn’t pull out a real smile, but it’s quickly become my most cherished photo.'”
