Loose Change

« Back to Virgin America Awkward Family Vacation Contest

“Like many who grew up in the 70s, my family’s annual vacation generally meant piling into the car and driving across country to somewhere cheap. My father was an incredible penny-pincher in those days, admirably captured in this photo. I believe we were on our way from Montreal to Moody Beach, Maine when we stopped off to get something to eat. My father dropped his change after the meal and he made us all scramble around the Lums Restaurant parking lot picking up the pennies.”

This picture is of Ohms on Lisbon St in Lewiston, Me. You can see the steeple of Holy Cross Church in the background. The brick building across the street on the left is an accountant’s office now. The white apartment building in the background is now the office of Dr. Norman Madore. Across the street from Lums was the Steer House and Happy Jacks was just down the street

We used to go to the Lum’s in Bangor Maine all the time. I don’t remember much about the food but we went there for the cold beer and casual atmosphere. The served beer in frosted mugs and we would hole up in the corner booth for hours. I do remember the ‘Ollieburger’ but couldn’t tell you what it tasted like. The was one in Augusta, Maine as well and we went there a few times. The Bangor location is now a Guvernor’s restaurant.

Is this Columbus, Ohio ??? We used to go to a LUMS there, I didn’t know if it was a chain. Great shot though, love it.

What cracks me up is that someone had the presence of mind to actually PHOTOGRAPH this moment. LOVE IT.

OMG! I know this parking lot! This is in Bangor, Maine, and was actually a popular restaurant back in the day. (No thanks to Nancy’s family…) My friends and I always wanted to meet the Lum family, but alas, never did… So we just called it SLUM and pretended we were dyslexic before we knew what it meant. Thanks!

I don’t recall the Lums in Bangor, but I remember the one in Portland a little too well. What a hellhole. Just going to a Lums with your family would have been awkward enough, regardless of what you were wearing for pants.

This Lums Restaurant is actually in Lewiston Maine. The church in the background is St. Croix. It is now the home of a Chinese Restaurant called Cathay Hut and next door is a Dunkin Donuts, . I used to eat there all the time with my grand father.

the plaid bell bottoms pants! 1974, perhaps? My dad had these same pants, pretty sure I had a pair myself. & I remember LUMS restaurants back then, on the east coast, & they had a little theme song at the time “no matter what you’re cravin’, Lums’ll leave you ravin’…”

    Performance art indeed :)

Reminds me of the time my mom was taking me to urgent care and she made me wait for 10 minutes outside while she picked up cans so we could take to recycling for cash. Penny-pinchers are an interesting breed!

This transcends awkward. This is performance art.

Is plaid-butt your dad? If so, I think you’ve evened the score by posting this one. :)
