Lunch Break
“It’s obligatory to take a family photo in front of the Washington Monument when in D.C., but apparently it’s a bad idea to interrupt lunch when doing so. With a half-eaten sandwich in everyone’s hands but my dad’s, the only smile is his. And there’s something so wrong about all of our outfits. I’m the one in the yellow dinosaur shirt that is very tucked-in to pink pants. Plus, the monument is apparently growing out of my sister’s back. I believe our grandparents took the photo. Obviously well-trained at the art of framing the perfect picture!”
The VW Suite
“This photo was taken of my mom and me during my family’s road trip across the country in 1975. Dad and Mom bought an orange VW pop-top, loaded all of our belongings inside and hit the road. It became our home. Mom even decorated (note the hanging plant). This is a snapshot of one of my potty breaks. A little hard to go when everyone was watching.”
Petrified*
“This is my brother and me at Petrified Forest National Park in the mid 90s. For a beautiful as the park is, our parents picked the most boring spot for a picture. This must have been the first piece of petrified wood we saw upon entering the park, and clearly a photo-op.”
The Wallflower
“My wife was picture-happy on our recent trip to France. “Hey! Stand there so I can get a picture of the pretty wall!” I didn’t get it. It clearly shows on my face.”
