“This is my brother and me at Petrified Forest National Park in the mid 90s. For a beautiful as the park is, our parents picked the most boring spot for a picture. This must have been the first piece of petrified wood we saw upon entering the park, and clearly a photo-op.”

“My wife was picture-happy on our recent trip to France. “Hey! Stand there so I can get a picture of the pretty wall!” I didn’t get it. It clearly shows on my face.”

Bored in the USA

“Our family drove from Minnesota to Washington DC for a family vacation one summer when I was thirteen. This is a photo of my sister and I in front of the White House in all of our fanny pack festooned glory. Amazing the secret service didn’t bring us in under suspicion of a dork attack on the President.”

“Circa 1983. My mom took us on vacation to Hawaii. My mom looks good, my brother looks constipated, and my sister (then 13) had just cut off all her hair. This photo reminds me why I never wear a moustache!”

“Classic tourist photo op near Waikiki. I’m pretty sure that the performers made my dad take his shirt off. It sure wasn’t our choice. (P.S. I’m in the red striped socks.)”

The Pioneers

“Every year our family used to go on an organized “Rendezvous.” Always held in some remote part of Wyoming, or Montana, or Colorado, the main tenant of these rendezvouses was that you had to wear clothes, use cooking utensils, and even sleep in tents and linens available during the period – mid 19th century!! And we were there for a week at a time to boot! So needless to say by the time we took this photo during day 5 of a particularly hot rendezvous in Colorado one year, my sister and I had had just about enough. The result…a truly awkward family photo!”
