“This is a photo of my family on the way to Disney World during the summer of 1976. That’s Mom, Dad and me in the back and Grandma sleeping. We all traveled together (Grandma, Mom, Dad, sister, two aunts & me) in that big brown station wagon and pulled a pop up camper behind us (we were the Griswolds before the Griswolds existed). No air conditioning, high humidity and a Grandmother who snored – is it any wonder I still can’t even think of vacationing in Florida?”

OMG…….I just had a flashback……….Mom, Dad, 5 kids, Grandma and a cousin………but we didn’t have a camper…….we slept in the station wagon!!!
We took the same vacation! Except ours was all over Ireland and my grandmother wore her trench coat the whole way and my dad ripped the vent off the top of the rental van going into a garage. Great times!
LOL! I felt like I lived half my life the back of the station wagon when I was a kid.
We have A/C down here now. Come on back!
This reminds me uncomfortably of that National Lampoon Vacation movie. Your grandma was alright, though, wasn’t she?
We did the same thing. We would take turns sleeping in the floorboard or in the back part where the windshield was. How crazy stupid was that?! Ah the joys of traveling in the 70s.
Ah, road trips are such fun! We tried it about the same time, with 5 kids, Grandma, hubby and me. Tried to rotate seats so each kid had some time by the window as we headed south from Albany to FL. Didn’t work so well when the oldest boy had his turn by the window … he didn’t want it down because the wind would mess his hair. HIS hair!
Are you travelling in the family’s monument to naugahyde?
