Awkward Drill Team
August 3rd, 2009
According to Ingrid, “our music was something by the Doobie Brothers and the soundtrack of Labyrinth. I kid you not, we were instructed to emulate amoeba at the beginning of our routine. Which included hula hoops.”

Haha ohhhh my god! This town in 45 minutes away from me and my aunt lives there! Hahaha. I’m gonna have to ask her if she knows any of those people.
Let’s face it….the 80′s were just plain awkward!
14 girls, 1 dude… what a lucky boy!!!
Ok I am fairly certain there are at least 5 or 6 guys in the picture.
The entire front row is male and then in the second row, second from the RIGHT is a guy and !!!! possibly The Top row Second from the left.
But with all that freakish 80′s hair, how can a person be certain. We need a comment from someone who was in this photo for full clarification. 1 of these fifteen people HAS GOT to see this picture on here sooner or later! Then again.. I don’t think i would Admit to being in this picture myself…
Dance Magic Dance
Jump Magic Jump
now i’ma have that song stuck in my head all night!
oh boy, if bowie had a drill team…this would be it.
so this is the thompson twins’ drill team?
Is that a dude in the front row? Talkin about awkward!
I have looked at this photo a few times, and it just hit me: some of them are actually guys!?!?!
My daughter is on a colorguard squad at ther high school and thankfully, their uniforms have been rather nice. But rest assured, judging from what I’ve seen at the competitions, there are still plenty of other squads out there not afraid to “fly their freak flags!”
whoa- can you imagine what it would have looked like if they had all done “jazz hands”?
Yes, yes I can…
Sledgehammer meets Alice Cooper video!!
sometimes, I doubt your commitment to sparkle motion.
hahahahahaha!!!!!!!!!!!
Let your Freak Flag Fly!
those are not spirit fingers, THIS are spirit fingers!
They look ready for a Queen music video, where’s Freddy Mercury?
This performance (and its after party) was the inspiration behind the “Just Dance” video.
Another timeless reminder of how the drill team is always the coolest kids in school.
Lady Gaga’s Fan Club
PFFT…Yeah right!
More like Kajagoogoo!
I could see them dancing to “Too Shy”.
No, there’s two now.. one in the middle row and one in the top row.. see if you can find them
okay there is one person in the photo who has no idea whats going on, see if you can find her…
That is just too funny! JAZZ HANDS! I love the kiss-ish make up too!
Only drill teams can rock the socks and sandals to THAT level! :]]
Socks and sandals, tights, are those capes? That is just amazing…. x]]
Please, please… someone videotaped the performance…. just post the youtube link… Please.
HAHAHA!
I love you.
The best part is that they made the championships. Somewhere, there must be a movie in the works…
This picture is the best on the site!
*JAZZ FINGERS*
I love how EVERYONE is doing something different with their hands.
I think I may be in love with everyone in this photo. SHEER AMAZINGNESS.
I find myself wondering exactly which Doobie Brothers’ tune is best paired with the Labyrinth soundtrack…hmmm..China Grove?…..Rockin Down the Highway?..hmmm…
It was the ’80′s. You had to be there.
So very right. I can’t explain the neon colors, bizarre big hair, strange silhouettes or overall attitude to my kids now. This is a great example of why we need to keep the 80′s there, revisiting it everyso often, just to remind ourselves to wear neutral colors.
Waaaaaarrrriors come out and plaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay….Warrrriors come out and daaaaaaaaaance!!!!!!
HAHAHAHAHA!
OMG! I just snorted soda. Too funny!
Course, the reference is from the 80′s so most people probably won’t get it.
roflcopter…the warriors, ftw. the warriors did it!! ^.^
OOOH NOOO they killed Cyrus
You remind me of the baby
What baby? the baby with the power
What power? power of voodoo
Who do? you do
Do what? remind me of the baby
Dance Magic Dance!
This is amzing! The most awkward part is trying to imagine ANY Doobies tune that could possibly warrant jazz hands!!
“You remind of the babe, what babe? The babe with the power, what power? The power of voodoo, who do? You do!”
A homage to Kiss? Scary mimes? Bleeding-eye zombies? Sad clowns? I’m so confused.
Is this the legendary KISS army?
Girls in the middle: gimme five!
Girls on the top: Up high!
Guys? on bottom: Down low! TOO SLOW!
I feel like they are trying to tell me something. Like they are spelling it out for me with all the different hand positions, but I just can’t figure it out!
Jazzhands?
Ladies and Gentlemen, your tax dollars at work! No wonder they wanted to count ketchup as a vegetable in the ’80s, as they were spending so much on hula hoops and dark eye make-up.
Love the girl in the back row, 3rd from the left. Awesome, tentative jazz hand!
Something tells me she wasn’t that into it!!!
Also, are boys allowed on drill team? He sporting a serious jazz hand though!!!
ILLINOIS?
Wow, you wouldn’t ever expect that!
I love the description of their music.
i’ve heard of jazz hands, but not jazz hand…
Jazz Hands Personified!
This isn’t awkward,
it’s Awesome!!
AGREE…wish my school had a cool drill team like this!
My school had a drill team that I was on, but it was more military than jazzed-up hands that this team has. I think that Alice Cooper did their make-up though!
I am digging the reversible black and whit gloves….
This picture needs to enter the halls of awesomeness and be gold-framed on the wall.
You think this is awkward? You should see the basketball team! GO ZOMBIES!
I live and teach high school in Jacksonville, Illinois! Although I was only 7 years old when this was taken. I am really curious if this is the team from the high school or if they just held the championships here, and this team is from out of town and competed here.
I actually went to MacMurray College and was amused to see this
I won’t be able to sleep now that you’ve posed the question.
I was wondering the same thing Buford.
Who’s the Drill Team leader? Gene Simmons?
probably david bowie. Go jazz hands!
Jazz Hands!
Lady GaGa
I always have thought that hula hoops and amoebas should go hand in hand!
