“For ALL the skating lessons and outfits I’ve doled out, ONE of you kids better be the next Sonja Henie” (1930′s Olympic skater turned movie star for a time- sort of a Kristi Yamaguchi prototype).
I don’t get it. Why is this awkward? They’re having fun together. It’s a lovely photo.
Unfortunately, to many people today, anything warm and wholesome is ridiculous…
I love this family! They look very happy and fit. And they’re spending quality family-time together!
In all seriousness,
NOT AWKWARD.
This is just a beautiful photograph.
I absolutely love this photo– nothing awkward about it.
i love this one! so cute!

Wonder if this is how mom and dad met? It’s rather cute! And they seem genuinely happy. Well, maybe not Dad, who may be feeling a little shaky.
This is a great picture. Judging from the girl’s skates and the fashion, it’s either the 50′s or the early ’60s. Ice skates came up higher then and the haircut of the youngest girl looks a lot like a popular “pixie” haircut of the late 50s early 60s. As for the pants, they could be regular pants, but I think they’re the now old-fashioned gaberdine pants men wore for skating. Did anyone notice that the younger sister fell, evidenced by the wet spot on her knee.
Not awkward at all; just sweet.
I totally agree that this is a cute photo and the first thing I thought was that the youngest girl looks like Ellen DG.
I like this! we used to skate as a family, not indoors in cute outfits, and my mom skates three times a week at age 66!
Here’s a family that owns a regulation size casserole dish.
ah ha ha, love it! winning comment!!
I don’t care what anyone says–that’s a great looking family. Are they real? Not out of a Sears & Roebuck, are they?
Coming Friday to the Youngstown Civic Center – “Father Knows Best On Ice!” With Dick Button as Jim, Hays Jenkins as Bud….”
(Joking aside, I think it’s adorable.)
The youngest girl looks like Ellen Degeneres.
Does anyone know what the sweater that the dad is wearing is called? I’ve looked on vintage clothing sites and can’t find it. It’s from the early 60′s and it’s a striped cardigan I think. But I can’t find one online.
The sweater and all the girls wear were made by my mother…those were practice outfits…we had costumes for shows
So you do know this looks adorable, right? What kind of shows did you do?
Oooh — is the awkwardness that your feet are not in 3rd position like the rest of your family?
Carlos, I have one… my brother’s, from the ’60s. I wore it in the 80s as vintage, but it’s pure wool & ITCHES like the devil! I will see if I can find it for you.
Not awkward !
Such a cute picture !
If God intended for people to skate he would’ve…aw nevermind.
And you know those outfits were handmade my mom herself!
When mom says it’s “All skate”, then everyone better get their skates on and look happy….. I bet she was Olympic back in her youth and living vicariously though her daughters……
Anyone notice it looks like little sis has a bloody knee?
That’s why big sis has the crown.
I also love how Mom and Dad aren’t together…the son comes between them. It’s probably a height thing, but still…so old school
I thought maybe she fell or kneeled and got her knee wet……I hope it’s not blood and they took the pic without cleaning her up first.
No it’s not blood. I was racing around the rink, even though mom gave strict instructions to stay quiet and clean (possibly related to Aunt Marnie) and I fell and got my tights wet. As usual I was in the dog house (and no longer a candidate for the tiarra). And it was several years later before I started flipping people off much to the horror of my mother.
THIS IS AN AWESOME PIC!!!
So perfect for the olympic closing time! I just love the rockin’ stems and figure on mom and the beautiful tiara on sister. Great photo!
I agree with everyone…this is super cute and sweet and not awkward. Our fam used to ice skate as a family every Friday night, back in the fifties.
Glad to know I’m not the only one who spotted Ellen!
If the person who submitted the photo thinks it’s awkward, let it go!
Come on people!
I’m betting they don’t think it’s awkward — that they thought it was so awesome they kind of wated to share it…and I’m glad they did. Very swet.
This isn’t awkward. Nothing even remotely cringeworthy. If this was my family I’d buy myself a mantle to hang it over!
I really do not see how this is awkward. It’s a family that figure skates?
i’m with you kat
My family used to roller skate on the weekends. It was a great family thing to do!
This is so Ozzie and Harriet.
I think the youngest girl looks like young Ellen Degeneres!! (:
I think this photo is a reminder of a better and much simpler time. Very sweet!
This is so cute… All I to say to mom is….. wait for it….. She’s got LEEEGs! She knows how ta use them!!!! (In a Barbara Billingsley kind of way, course). And the dad is soooo Dick Button!
i seem to have missed the awkwardness and detected only cute. it’s a nice picture
Gotta vote for sute on this one.
CUTE, not sute – will try to proof next time.
I didn’t realize Ellen DeGeneres was a skating prodigy.
That was my first thought, too.
Okay, maybe not my FIRST, but definitely in the first 5.
I said the very same thing! I sent it to her in fact.
I love this pic! It’s sweet in a very 50′s kind of way. And does anyone else think the youngest girl looks like a mini Ellen?
I was thinking the same thing. It does look like Ellen.
that’s what I was thinking. A dead ringer for Ellen
Yes indeeeeed!
i don’t think this is funny. it’s cute.
Adorable! Not awkward!
I think this is a nice family photo. All I can say is after having three kids and still having a nice waist like moms-maybe I should take up skating!!
Skating/Rollerblading/rollerskating (for you oldschoolers out there) is the best exercise, period, because it’s cardio, forward movement and side to side movement all at the same time. [There's an Olivia Newton-John Xanadu-Let's Get Physical segue here, but I'm not up to it...]
Wait a minute….what if that’s actually….oldest sister?
Wow, mom’s in good shape for having had 3 kids. MIL*!
lol, this one’s actually kind of cute.
What’s weird is that the girls/ladies are all in skating outfits while the guys are in just regular street clothes but with skates on.
Yeah, you’re right. The fellas should wear fire and ice outfits like in Blades of Glory.
I don’t think those are normal pants. Check out the cuff…???…I could be wrong. It’s happened before. And I don’t know jack about staking.
I think in the 60′s most men skated in outfits that looked close to street wear. The unitard and spangles have only come into being since the 80′s or so.
I think that is cute!
Notice, the youngest daughter is starting to give the bird? Maybe she is pissed she could’t wear a crown like her sister?!
LOL!!!
I love this picture! How fun that they all went skating as a family – you don’t see families doing much together these days. This photo is awesome.
Agreed. It’s a cute photo from…the 50′s?
I love this!! I love skating too! Ha gives me an idea for a family photo lol! Now to get the bf into a pair of figure skates (he’d say not happening EVER)
The skates are easy. Getting him into the flirty skate skirt’s gonna be hard.
I agree, I love this picture and fail to see any awkwardness.
If everyone doesn’t complete their triple axles before dinner, nobody eats!
its quads now…………cant get a medal if you dont do a quad but you get the 2nd place tiara
yeah…the little brother on the end that was forced in to the skirt fell while trying the quad. that’s why his knee is wet.
