I have a nephew that does that with his eyes whenever there are pictures taken, but his mouth is normal. He’s 16 and you can look at his pictures through the years and his eyes are always opened really wide. I don’t know if he thinks he’s going to squint because of flash and tries to compensate.
It’s from the movie Spinal Tap. There’s a scene where a guy is talking about a speaker that “goes to 11″ for when you really want some ooomph. At least I believe this is a play on that.
Jean Shepherd’s inspiration behind “A Christmas Story”. Little Randy would have to be toned down to a simple uncontrollable laugh however, this smile kind of freaked Jean out.
My parents should be glad after I show them this — they had trouble getting me to smile in photos when I was younger, but if they had bugged me about it just a bit more, I probably would have turned into an oversmiler too!
We absolutely need to arrange some sort of introduction for this little boy, and the original oversmile girl. Hopefully, they’re around the same age, and will hit it off.
The glare from the shining oversmiles of the resultant children will be epic. Perhaps it can be harnessed as some sort of temporary-blindness weapon…
Actually you’re right, though it sits amongst others in sort of a best-hits collection. This is the one that gets the most laughs from people on their first visit to our home.
Casey – this is my favorite photo on the whole site. It would be hilarious if everyone posed again exactly like this in the same pose (a modern-day version) and the oversmiling boy (now a teenager?? man??) gave the EXACT same facial expression. And then you have to submit the new photo here again. PUH-LEEZE!!!!
Eventually you just give up. My 3 year old has been doing this in photos for the past 6 months or so. EVERY time. It’ll be hilarious later. Right now, not so much.
YES! I opened the comments on this one because I KNEW, I just KNEW that I wasn’t imagining the uncanny resemblance. That kid went home and hid under the kitchen sink, I just know it. Then he played with his mashed potatoes at dinner.

i think i know this family…. *facepalm*

Hahaha! That is so cute!
i dont get the caption for this? x

Totally a play on Spinal Tap…..”found an amp that goes to 11, all the others only go to 10″. Wahahahahaha!
Jean Shepherd’s inspiration behind “A Christmas Story”. Little Randy would have to be toned down to a simple uncontrollable laugh however, this smile kind of freaked Jean out.
Wow I commented above about how he looks like Randy. I didn’t think anyone else would have reached the same conclusion independently, too funny!
….I think the dad is my high school Government teacher from senior year…
Yes he is…I picked it out right away. Was gonna double check the yearbook but then I saw it was submitted by Miller. No doubt.
Nope

That’s hilarious! Also a shame, because it really would have been a totally non-awkward nice photo.
too cute!!
It’s howdy DOOdy TIME,
It’s HOWdy dooDY time…
I LOVE this photo
It made me smile too.
Haha, I started by looking at Mom and went clockwise. I was like “Ok, normal, normal, normal, HOLY CRAP!”
Lol. That is pure win right there.
I still don’t get the 11 and 12 part… I feel kinda dumb!!!
It’s a reference to Spinal Tap.
OMG! I just spotted a rat as big as a cat!
I guess moms everywhere are right. It actually WILL freeze if you make a silly face once too many times.
“IIIIIIEEEEEE am the GREAT CORNHOLIO!”
Looks like someone consumed two tons of sugar before the family photo.
Bonus points for the random floating cows on his shirt.
OMG!!! I love it! He looks like he’s in a wind tunnel.
LOL
so lets summarize:
Mom is channeling Darla (from the little rascals)
Dad is channeling Steve Zahn
Bro is channeling Marisa Tomei
The Kid is channeling Alfalfa
and was also the body double for both Wallace AND Grommit!
Your summary is hysterical! Sounds like a new Disney movie.
I love this. What a thing for family and friends to have a laugh over for a lifetime, we have similar pics as well.
Dad’s tie knot makes the boy look like he has a cow-lick.
Alfalfa is that you?
I bet they had that hanging in the main hall. Too cute.

“Cheeeese, Gromit.”
I’d like to award you nine out of ten Internets for that comment, if I may.
WIN. WIN WIN DOUBLE WIN.
How cute is this? I love it.
Eventually you just give up. My 3 year old has been doing this in photos for the past 6 months or so. EVERY time. It’ll be hilarious later. Right now, not so much.
LMAO good god I need to stop looking at these pics at work
He’s just making up for his lack of teeth.
This one made me giggle more than any others I’ve seen lately. Probably because I’m spending so much time with my 3 boys!
Alfalfa?
The dad looks like Steve Zahn!
hahahaa…I think the little toothless boy looks like Alfalpha from Lil Rascals fame…CUUUUTE!
This was part of his portfolio in auditioning for the role of Alfalfa in the next unnecessary remake of The Little Rascals.
YIKES!! I’ll bet the photographer was wearing a clown suit….. *shiver*
The old brother looks like Marisa Tomei to me. Which I realize is odd.
LOL – I see it!
And now I see it too. Yikes.
HA! i see it too!
totally Marisa!
he was just told he would be getting dads adams apple when he grows up.
I read the heading then started slowly scrolling down. Nice, nice, nice, WTH?
That’s exactly what I did! Hahahah
Thanks. I just peed my pants.
And I think little Ronald is trying NOT to.
The little boy kind of looks like a ventriloquists’s dummy…which makes the idea of mom and her hand placement a little suspect.
OMG!! That is hilarious!!
The youngest reminds me of Alfalfa from the Little Rascals…..wish his hair was gelled to a point!! LOL!!
Yes! Alfalfa!
(plus his mom looks a little like Darla!)
This is THE BEST awkward Family Photo I have ever seen. I will buy the next book if they put this pic in it!
Definitely. It should be on the cover.
I was going to say he reminds me of Ralphie’s younger brother from A Christmas Story (I think his name is Randy)… but Alfalfa kinda works too

“If you smile really big, the tooth fairy might bring you some new teeth tonight.”
Great photo. It’s like a modern family with a 1960′s TV sitcom kid in it! LOL
I don’t know which is more awkward…his smile or his shirt!
I love the shirt!
nice cow shirt
I agree – nice shirt!
how cute
WOW LMAO
Mom whispers through clenched teeth as she pinches Junior’s heinie, “Smile, dammit…”
That’s it exactly!!
He’s seen the massive set of chompers older bro is sportin’ and is practicing for when his gargantuan permanent teeth grow in.
Bro’s teeth are fine. Were you a bully as a kid?
Oh, man, this one made me LOL til it hurt, awesome!!!
Me too.
And I gotta say, THAT looks like a happy family.
Me, too! Thanks AFP.
OMG, tic-tac out the nose!
The smile. The cow shirt. Awesome!
