Reach Out And Touch - Behind The Awkwardness

“This one perfectly sums up my siblings complete inability to give genuine hugs to each other. This was taken at my high school graduation in ’05. That is not my molester uncle… it is actually my brother Sean, mid-embrace. And that little cupcake is my little sister Rain. Why am I cupping her ear like that? We may never know.”

That dress is freaking awesome! *jealous*

  2. Alekx says:

This just proves that parents should not force their kids into picture love because
it truly just ends up awkward.

I agree with many other claims of the wedgie woman in the back.
    Not a pretty sight.

Anyway, I might add that Sierra is a major cutie in my opinion.
Even if she has an ear cupping hobby.

  3. Victoria says:

I went to high school with him!
It’s a trip seeing his picture on here randomly.

  4. Danny says:

I love this pic so MUCH! It’s the look on the girl’s face. AWKWARD city! And the hipster older brother with his ironic vintage wear. Perfection!

  5. Michelle says:

LOL! This same thing happened with my husband and I in a WEDDING photo. He was leaning into kiss me and was reaching for my face and the camera caught it mid-action so it looked as if he was grabbing my boob! LOL. This is so funny. You are not alone! But the sister with the hand cupped over her ear? That one has yet to happen in our family. LOL. Too funny!

  6. kim says:

Others may disagree, but I think this family has a great style! Awkward, but stylin’ :]

  7. james ryan says:

    Jonas Brothers look.

  8. George says:

The lady in the tight white dress is kinda’ awkward too.

  9. Di says:

    Robin Scherbatsky? Is that you?!

  10. M says:

What isn’t awkward about this picture!?

  11. Jane says:

    My goodness!

  12. Lauren says:

bahaha this is like my favorite picture

  13. joaniebaloney83 says:

Hmmmm, the brother kinda looks like Nick Lowe. Did anybody else notice that, or am I really dating myself?

  14. Cindy says:

Maybe it’s just that I was looking at the Scooby Doo pool a moment ago, but doesn’t bro bear a striking resemblance to Shaggy and big sis to Velma? Little sis could be a younger Daphne, but now I’m just reaching…

  15. KT says:

I don’t think the woman in white has a wedgie. I think those are actually capri pants.

  16. Tangerine says:

Your bro is pretty sexy rexy if I do say so

  17. Silverear says:

Hm, Christian-Side-Hug Fail by the brother? ;)

  18. Emily says:

The clothes and the fact that the daughters name is ‘Rain’ make me think they come from a unique family :o) Which I think is awesome (but then again…my kid’s middle names are Sunshine and Sky). Looks like mommy lets the little girl dress herself, haha cute. Funny picture for sure.

  19. Excentrico says:

    First: LOVE the outfits!
Second: gorgeous brother. although it might be the vest i’m lusting after.
Third: more pics please, one can only wonder how birthday parties must look like…

  20. m says:

This photo is a smorgasbord of awkwardness. There is too much to take in. It’s like an awkward overload.

  21. Madi says:

They look like indie rock stars. Haha. Totally cool.

  22. Kars says:

I think the brother is hot.

  23. Brother Sean is a dreamboat. Tell him to holla at me.

  24. hello_cleveland says:

    Sierra, your brother is hot.

  25. Leighann says:

Wow, 2005? I don’t recall those fashions in 2005!! Scary!!!!

  26. LuLu says:

This photo looks like it has been shuffling around in a box with a bunch of other assorted junk for quite some time. That’s too bad. I’d send this sucker out as your christmas card next time around or blow it up, frame it, and surprise your parents with it prominently placed on the mantle. This photo deserves a grand gesture.

  27. Pete says:

A little sepia tone and this could be an early 80s shot. Actually, I think this photo could survive scrutiny as a period photo from just about any year, except 2005 :) Love the happy days suit your brother is wearing.

Oh, and the breast grab coupled with your brother’s knowingly creepy smile is just perfect.

    10/10 on the awkwardness scale

PS. Is there a DeLorean parked out back by any chance?

  28. sj says:

The explanation for the ear cupping…. Hear no evil.

The explanation for the breast cupping… See no evil. (or is it “C”?)

The explanation for the awkwardness for which words cannot truly express… Speak no evil.

Which makes this photo a modern (albeit dated) depiction of the 3 wise monkeys.

  29. Uncuw Biww says:

He has the same affliction as the Dr in Nurse Jackie!

  30. Sara says:

Since the little sister is also wearing weird clothes, I’m going to guess they come from a wacky hippie bohemian-type family. I would love to see what the parents are wearing!

    • Sarah says:

The youngest’s name is Rain, the submitter’s is Sierra….nope, not hippies at all. How did Sean get that name, or was he named after Sean Lennon?

Not knocking the names, I have an affinity for the odd, too. I actually want to name a kid Hart.

And, I wore mismatched shoes in high school, given they were the same brand, though.

  31. eko says:

Cup the breast – cup the ear, hmmm…I missed out on this fad. Shame.

  32. Kristy says:

Rock me, Amadeus! This shot is awesome on so many levels.

  33. It is better if you don;t hear him sneaking up….

  34. Susan says:

Kinda takes your mind off the fact that the brother’s shoes don’t match!!

    • Cheryl says:

OMG! I didn’t even see that! I was too distracted by the clothes those poor people are wearing. Hard to believe that’s 2005!

  35. David says:

OMG! How cute, they found a graduation cap for your second head – sprouting from your neck. Awwwww!

  36. keimloesch says:

Cup an ear, cup a breast… what the heck.

  37. JN says:

Nice black slip peek, Sierra. ;)

  38. Sonn says:

The woman behind you in the white skirt has serious stand-up skirt wedgie. Ouch!

  39. Jessica says:

What is the little sister wearing?

  40. Yvonne says:

I think the more relevant question is, why is your brother cupping your breast?

  41. backchat says:

So hopefully it just LOOKS like bro is cupping her chest? If it was caught mid-hug, it could really be an optical illusion, with the camera snapping a moment too soon. Otherwise I would ask that the caption be changed to, “The family that cups together, stays together!”

  42. KVC says:

    Fab dress Sierra

  43. Julie says:

I’m not sure who is having the better party, the people at the graduation or the folks on your dress…

  44. Pookie says:

Coming from a family who hates to touch each other, I feel your pain…and your body language…and that look on your face.

notice I didn’t mention the breast grab

  45. Jen says:

Gotta love the timing of snapping a photo. I can see where this one was going but the mid-embrace photo makes this one look kinda “pervy.”

The facial expressions make this one a great shot! Thanks for the explanation!

  46. Maria says:

It’s the wedgie of the woman in white (background) that I find truly awkward.

  47. Trish says:

Not to mention the balloons growing out of your head.

  48. Whoa says:

Seems like an awful lot of cupping going on….

  49. LT says:

That “cupcake” has quite the fashion sense!

  50. Ronny says:

    2005? Really?
