Behind The Awkwardness: Blades Of Glory
June 16th, 2010
“My younger brother in his ‘awkward yet fabulous’ phase. Please note the following:
1. Western-style shirt with Christmas-star-snowflake ornament….
2. One exposed skate (just to prove that you’re wearing skates?).
3. Indestructible plastic-frame glasses because, of course, the parents were worried about their child breaking the stylish/expensive ones.
4. Gold lamé fabric bringing out the most unsympathetic tones in the ginger kid’s skin and hair.”

Song from Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory……I’m wearing a Golden Ticket !!!
Sassy! Now give me some jazz hands!
You’re the best big brother ever
Awww, give the kid a break… I mean, this picture was taken YEARS & YEARS before he founded Microsoft…
not awkward yet fabulous – it’s just absolutely fabulous!!!
I demand an update! Whatever happened to this guy? I bet he become only more fabulous as the years went on.
Do tell.
Yes, Yes!! Enquiring minds want to know!!
Lost Excerpt from “In God We Trust – All Others Pay Cash” by Jean Shepherd.
After the inevitable ending to our holiday season of fluffy bunny feet and b-b guns, my mother had taken me promptly to get me a new pair of glasses. They were sturdy and were certain to be able to withstand any other flying bullets should I need to save our house from Bad Bart again.
It was five days after Christmas when the doorbell rang and I had received my birthday present from my Aunt – yes, the one who thought I was not only four years old but also a girl, and inside were ice-skates and what can only be described as gold tin foil as my costume. My mother once again made me try it on when my brother Randy, grabbed the camera and snapped a picture of it only to later post it on “Awkward Family Photos” which would end up to be my most humiliating experience of my life.
*End Lost Excerpt*
FTW!!!
Winner Winner Chicken Dinner! I laughed muhself out of muh seat “ITHANGYU”
Just a thought: I’d be real careful during thunderstorms wearing this.
I think I’ve seen Kim Jong-il in that outfit before.
Wow, me too! Hilarious
Loud and Proud?!
Pure Fabulosity! Hope he is having a nice life…
I love this kid!
“HATERS GOTTA HATE”
SUPERSTAR!
This kid is adorable!
‘Awkward yet fabulous.’ — yesssss
Goldfinger.
He’s the man, the man with the midas touch.
A spider’s touch.
Such a cold finger.
Beckons you to enter his web of sin
But don’t go in.
if they weren’t so shiny they’d almost be pyjamas
wowsa. I mean, wow, indeed.
Hey Laura’s younger brother…don’t get mad at your sister posting this picture, get even! Find a good one of her and send it in. I double dog dare ya…I triple axle dare ya!!!!!
i think he is adorable, brave and has a fantastic sense of humor…
OMG!!! Must have been the 80′s. But, dude, you are rockin’ that lame’!! If my little brother had the guts to happily wear that outfit, I’d show him off as the cool little bro’ he is, too!!
Hey… At least he’s happy. Despite the western costume, the rolled-up leg looks pretty gangsta, though. Gangsta Cowboy on Ice = good.
Gangsta is what I was thinking, too, Truetrue. I think he’s a member of the notorious Lame’ Gang (they broke up shortly after this picture was taken).
I love him!! Thanks for posting!!!
Where are the Robot, Judy and Penny? Warning! Warning! Warning!
LOL! Perfect!
Ohhh, the pain… the pain!
Love it!!
What a terrific sister for being sure to point out all the awkwardness in a very public forum. Don’t be surprised if he gives your kids ant farms or sand for Christmas.
Very clingy material….Ooops.
Buck Boitano in the 21st Century
ftw!!! But I will admit, that kid is probably making millions designing barbie clothing…
Ha! Win
GOLDMEMBER: The Younger Years
NAPOLION DYNAMITE: the younger years
Who needs a gold medal in figure skating when you have a whole gold outfit? And what an outfit it is!
OMG! But he looks so happy!
Do the Iron Lotus!
He looks so happy and pleased with what he’s got going on.
He looks like a young “Alpha” from that show “Dollhouse”!
“WHY?!?!WHY?!?!?WHY?!?!”
That is a very brave child.
I would say the brave one is the sister who submitted it. Surely he is now big enough to beat her up.
… but he’s so proud!
I like how the photog doesn’t have the right stuff for backgrounds so we see the ugly carpet/backdrop line!
Laura is such a cool big sis. Pointing out all the problems for her lil bro! Thanks, sissie! You RAWK!
He is on ice….therefore the background wouldn’t cover the floor.
Nope, not on ice. I used to figure skate- the photographers use this awkward blue stage to make it look like ice.
Awww,I thought be background was an iceberg.
Could this be the inspiration for the “Fire and Nice” episode of “Modern Family” where we discover Cameron and his sister were an ice dancing pair?
Haha, a ginger skating kid immediately made me think of Mitchell as well.
I thought of that, too!
It was Mitchell, not Cameron, who was the skater.
This kid is oozing self-confidence (seriously).
FABULOUS!
Your brother is ‘awesome’!
The exposed skate says it all for me.
And, but of course darling, your GingerBoy is going to get decked out in gold lamé! When you make a statement. You. Make.A. Statement.
So few people (with the notable exception of Cher) can pull off gold lame`, hollywood western, and black ice skates. Laura’s little bro should have a life-sized copy framed over his fireplace mantle! He rocks!
Laura, Laura, Laura.
DANG girl, why do you hate your little brother so much? Evil has a name … and its name is “Big Sister Getting Even”.
That’s a lotta lame’!
AHAHAHA!!! Nice!
lol that is so true
