Ha! My sister and I each had this sweater, in blue. We got them for Christmas from a tacky aunt. We were both like “Uhhhh, thaaaaaanks.” My sister had to wear hers for picture day that year. I think I got away with wearing mine once.
The sweater is cute for her. She’s still a kid and can get away with it. It’s the mother holding the dad’s hand down that’s awkward! She knows what he’s about to do and is holding him back!
I find it more awkward that the whole family shoehorned their not small selves into the narrow wall space between two doors. The photo composition is truly stupendous.
Moving your arms in this sweater must make the horses look like they have broken necks. Lying down, it would look like a Godfather movie scene, squared! I would not have thought any of that at that age, though, and I’d have happily worn it!
I made a very similar sweater for my son and my baby sister. I think the pattern was in Vogue Knitting around the time he was born – March 1984. Anyone who loves the sweater may be able to find the pattern. He got loads of compliments when he wore it. There was also one with a sheep if I recall correctly.
I adore this sweater and am planning to knit it for myself (I can wear it to 80s parties….or everywhere!). Thank you so much for the pattern reference, I will see if I can find it, otherwise I’m going to be writing my own pattern. I especially love the mane coming out of the arms…ha!
Nothing says “flattering” like a split-rail fence around your mid-section! And what are the white things? Stars? Sugar-cubes? Xs and 0x for tic-tac-toe? This sweater has gone an icon too far.
One of the things I enjoy about viewing this site on my computer is that as the page loads, all I can see is the top half of the picture. Usually there’s nothing remarkable. But when I scroll down, I am treated to the real awkwardness.
I wouldn’t have noticed the horses without the captions, It seems I’m getting so used to see weird colorful clothing on this website that I give them for granted XD
The 80′s strike again! My album is also full of tan floral wallpaper and big hair, big glasses and ugly sweaters…..though I don’t think we were quite so…..”touchy feely” as this group….
It saddens me to say if I had that sweater at my disposal when I was younger I would have worn it. I seem to recall having a shirt with a photograph on it of me and a random horse.
That sweater must have been pretty popular back in the day. I think I’ve seen 2 other people wearing it in other photos! (along w/ my friend in HS having owned one)

Funny thing is, that sweater would sell for over $50 on ebay during Christmas time
Oh man I used to have that sweater!
I can’t help but sing”Ebony and Iv-vor-ee” when I look at that sweater.
The sad thing is that I had that horse sweater – and rocked that sucker big time.
I had that but it was light blue!!!! I forgot all about that!
I had that sweater but it was pink and the horses were zebras! I loved it so much…then my cat pooped on it.
I would have killed for that sweater when I was a girl!
i had a very similar sweater back in the day, but it was grey and pink! wore it all the time
that horse sweater rules.
Cracking up at that caption . . . y’all are seriously hilARious!!
That would be the perfect sweater for one of those ugly sweater parties. Awesome!!

At least your aunt didn’t send pink bunny pajamas, and your parents forced you to wear them on Christmas Eve.
That could easily win an ugly sweater contest.
It’s Spy vs. Spy from Mad magazine – the equestrian edition.
I HAD THAT SWEATER!!!!!! Or my mom did, my memory is fuzzy, just like that sweater… In any event, i LOVED it!!!
Oh wow… I need one of those so bad!!!!
OMG I had that damn sweater too….
Any one know where I can find that sweater now?! I NEED ONE
Sad, I had that sweater in zebra!

What’s with the creepy ghost figure in the doorway on the left of this photo? Nobody else sees this?
It’s Roy Rogers lookin’ for Trigger.
NowI do, it is creepy

I predict in a few years those two horses will somehow develop “mumps”.
Quick–what’s the most awesome feature of that sweater?
a) The way the fence accenctuates the tummy area just so
b) The way the horses’ noses fall right on the boobs
c) Arm fringe! Arm fringe! Arm fringe!
i think i’m gonna go with…arm fringe!
That’s a horse of another color…
I didn’t notice right away but the sleeves of the sweater have fringe that is the horses’ manes! Oh, creative!

Are you kidding? I’d wear that sweater today if I had it in blue.
Agree! love it!!
Sad to say, but I would too.

I’m gonna go with leaves…or maybe hands :0
they are apples.
This is back when our cheeks needed glasses too!
Haha!
What a rebel! She refused to wear a white or baby blue sweater.

Oh my word I had this sweater when I was about that age! I definitely thought I was bringing some amazing fashion to my life.
Dueling horses sweater + bad perm mullet x oversized 80′s glasses = WIN!
I wouldn’t have noticed the horses without the captions, It seems I’m getting so used to see weird colorful clothing on this website that I give them for granted XD
Giddy up!

Even more awkward is that the guy’s hand has to be pinned. What was he grabbing for?
why is mom holding dad’s hand back?
He was gonna give “bunny ears” to someone.
That is so funny! That could easily be my sister!
I have to admit, the jumper is kinda cool, even if it is incredibly awkward!
I’m rather amused by the backwards hand grab, too.
That’s cute (for the decade it was in)–her grandma probably made it!
Sad part is, I would have loved that sweater when I was her age.. LOL
The sad thing…my daughter completely loves horses…if she saw this pic, she would so want that sweater!!
I had a jacket like that when I was younger and LOVED it!

I owned this shirt too!
I need that sweater in my life. Where can I get that?!!!
I WANT IT TOO!!!!!
OMG! i remember BEGGING my mother for this sweater! i thought it was the COOLEST thing EVER!
Lol I remember my best friend having one..so it must have been popular at some point…
nice idea.!
