Tinseltown - *AFP Hall Of Fame*

“This was one of my many dance costumes in the early 80’s. We were doing a theme to Star Wars for this one…but I’m not really sure why this particular costume was being used. Perhaps the cascading tinsel made it look futuristic? The worst part was that when my mom bought the photo package she also purchased a 5 inch button with this photo that she used to wear around.”

I have one of these head gears at home so when the cable goes down I wear it so we can get reception..

  2. Grizzabeth says:

star wars was a long long time ago in a galaxy far far away, so it’s not futuristic :> sorry, super nerd here! 😀 hilarious pic!

  3. Don says:

May the farce be with you.

  4. CP says:

You all laugh at this, but it is only a matter of time before Lady Gaga brings this look into fashion…just wait and see!!! Lol!

    Someone pissed off the director

My ballet outfits were always tasteful…but there was one tap recital that had I been in it, would have involved 42nd St-style leotards with tux vests. The only thing worse might have been the clown outfits sported by the two in the Jack and Jill contest photo.

The crime fighter we have come to know as…..”Captain Dazzle”, was born!

  8. CB says:

Maybe the mom wore the button to make sure she’d get smiled at….because this is hilarious! I would love to see the dance!! If it was taped, someone needs to track it down….I want to see for myself why there is flowing tinsel from that strange cloth helmet. Honestly, hilarious!!

My first thought was Aura Sing – a minor female character who was bald except for a pony tail on the top of her head.

  10. Piki says:

This is literally the first time I’ve ever typed “LOL”.
Being that I’m a father of 2 girls, you were adorable in spite of the ugly costume.

She can whip her hair around…oh wait…whip whatever that is

  12. justme says:

My goodness…..that looks like some sort of dominatrix thing on your head…..or maybe I’ve been watching too much CSI?

  13. Brenda says:

Her mouth is smiling, but her eyes say, “Get me out of here!”

  14. Natrone says:

    Were you a red lightsaber?

  15. jerkface says:

It looks like a Professional Wrestling outfit from 1982…

  16. Blessedmama says:

Hilarious! Aren’t proud moms the greatest?

  17. They have the confidence to pull this off.

  18. meri says:

This photo has it all! Excellent costume, fist under chin…thanks for sharing it!

  19. Mamchino says:

It does appear that you are soon going to be shot out of a cannon.

  20. Tim says:

Actually, the photo is not that bad. The head gear is goofy looking but your attractive face and honest smile is what mekes it work. And that’s why your mom was proud of it.

Awh, what a nice compliment! It seems it is a rare thing on this site.

    • Robin says:

As a member of my high school (and college) flag teams I had to wear a lot of bad outfits too. They always looked OK from a distance and in a group. But yeah, the closeup of the tinseled head gear is just bad. Keep smiling!

Whoa! A 5 inch button is the same size as the dessert plates in my set of china! You seem to have overcome this adversity without too much damage. That says a lot for your character:)

  22. js says:

The only thing missing … jazz hands!

  23. Jodi says:

I hope you were able to confiscate and destroy the button!!!!

I’m sure you’ve heard this before, but…I’m sorry that this happened to you, sometimes parents do mean things to their offspring. I should know I’m the mother of three! xD Thanks for the share! 🙂

    • Peter says:

It’s a parent’s job to (un)intentionally humiliate their kids. It is a proud tradition that reaches back through the ages.

  26. Mary says:

It’s not the costume, dancers always have WTF costumes. It’s the five inch photo button that gets me….oh Vanessa’s Mom,how could you?

  27. K'lyn says:

God bless you for your courage, my dear. I couldn’t have done it.

  28. Lucy says:

Oh…. the 5″ Button…. Yeah, my mom used to wear those to the band competitions. None survived to present day, btw.

  29. cm says:

This makes me so happy my daughter chose softball over dance.
