Actually, mom & dad were stapled to the back of the couch. They were only allowed to pop up like a Jack-In-The-Box when visitors came to call.

My parents owned this same couch back in the 80’s and I had those curtains in my room with a matching bed spread in my room.
It’s hilarious that they all wanted to pose behind/at the end of the couch yet still showed almost the entire couch prominently in the picture!
The Pattersons allways tried to make mr and mrs Fawkes feel normal when they came to visit, though their invisibillity.
