Actually, I really like this mama. She let them style their hair/clothes/makeup to who they were at the time and she was who she was at the time. I’m the only family member who doesn’t get upset when my child makes a weird face in pictures or poses weirdly. Hey, you want a family picture, my philosophy is that you’re taking pics of the PEOPLE in the family, so why not let them express themselves? Besides, they may be laughing at themselves NOW and going, “Mama! Why did you let me dress like that?”
A mullet with a mohawk and sideburns. Interesting. I see nothing odd about this picture. In fact, I used to have the same faux sweater vest as the mom did. Probably in that same color.
I can’t help but wonder why you’re assuming such trauma. They went with Mom for a family photo, “angry girl” is holding Mom’s hand… All I can deduce from this pic is a couple chicks went crazy with a fad, and Mom still wanted a family photo. If I dressed like this during that time, my parents would refuse to allow me in a family picture. I see a family that is still close no matter what.
This has to be late 80s or early 90s. I’d like to see what these folks look like today. I’m guessing the two kids are now boilerplate parents with either (a) even more far-out looking kids of their own (tattoos, multiple piercings, etc.) or (b) ultraconservative Alex P. Keaton-esque mini-Republicans.
Ooops, that was “to say”, but it went off the page and I couldn’t see it.
And now I can’t edit it. *sigh*
It’s never as funny if you have to do it this way.

I would LOVE to see a current photo of these three.
This may have been Kate Gosselin’s inspiration photo for her hairdresser!

I totally agree!
they obviously love their momma though! and i bet they’re not punked out anymore, they’re probably mommas with little punks of their own!
Mom looks like she’s been abducted by aliens.
Such a tender photo. The Mother and daughter are holding hands, how sweet. That is what makes this most awkward.

Long ago in a galaxy far, far away…

Um, wow, just wow.
I love it! The mom didn’t even flinch when they showed up looking like that for the photo.
“Mr. Scott, I need more Awkward!”
“I’m givin her all the awkward I got, Captain”
The brown haired girl was heavily inspired by her GBH t-shirt…
I can’t help but wonder …. where are these kids now? And, are they proud of what they put their mom through … particularly the angry younger one

Favorite. Family. EVAH. I want a whole LIFE like this picture.
awkward? not so much
AWESOME? HELL YEAH!
i wish this was *my* family photo. do you think i can sculpt my 3 year old daughter’s afro into a similar ‘do?

Those girls are probably running fortune 500 companies now…
I give these girls props for rockin’ such rad haircuts with confidence
The kids may have been punks in the 80s, but don’t kid yourself-Mom was a hippie in the 60s!
Beautiful. I am in awe.
The mom is trying to figure out how to nicely tell the girls she will NOT be using this photo for the annual Christmas Card.
They kind of look like they’re a happy family. Just not that day.
Either way, I like how the two are holding hands. LOL.
I am speechless…I can’t even think of a good compound bow joke…….
Thank GOD!!!!! Hopefully you’ve run out of them for good!!!
Is it just me, or is the girl in the back the spitting image of Christina Applegate?
dang, you beat me to it!!
Not the spitting image, but there is a resemblance yep.
Her kids are out of this world.
Is that Christina Applegate???
The Eighties is strong in this one
yes! this looks like the 80s punk version of “one day at a time.”
I think the girl on the right is actually keeping the mom from exiting the shot.
And that backdrop was no accident. That photographer just must have had one awesome sense of humor!
can anyone tell me what the deal is with the mohawk/sideburns haircut?? was this popular at the time?? if so, im glad i wasnt around for that!
Thats not just a mohawk and sideburns. Thats a mohawk, sideburns, and a mullet.
oh god.. that just adds another layer of awkwardness.. I wonder what those girls think of their “super-rad style” nowadays…

I said we’re gonna have a family photo, and that’s what we’re gonna do dammit!
What…..The……????
A mother’s unconditional love…
Oh. My. God. This is the single greatest picture EVER.
This photo is what it’s all about.
I agree, I don’t even know where to begin…. very awkward.. YAY!!
Just wondering who of them forced the others to do this picture
One of these things is not like the other, one of these things is not the same!
Hahahahaaaaa their mum looks terrified. They just look…like teenagers.
Little are we aware: this was Freaky Friday. Mom’s the real punk, but the kids decided to humour her, and she them.
just gold!! love it!! ya cant get better!!!
one of these things is not like the other….
ZING!
Amazingly awesome!
I have no words!!!!!!!!!!!
pure awesome!
Agreed!
Wow.
Just Wow.
Their mother must be SO proud!!!!! LOL
Exactly what I was thinking!
My words exactly!
The mother has two good reasons for looking scared!
“Do you like Flock of Seagulls?”
“…I can tell YOU do.”
Wow… that IS awkward.
love the reference.
HA! nice wedding singer reference. Love it.
I LOVE the “pigs in space” reference!
PIGS, IN, SPAAAACE!
The mom has a look on her face that says “They’re my daughters and I love them, they’re my daughters and I love them, DAMMIT!”
I was just going to say that! She loves them no matter what.
win
Hahaha wow thats so awesome, i love how everyone seems to be wearing makeup except mom xD
…LOOOOL. yeah – GREAT. you´re so right…
That’s a chick.
Ooops, that was “to say”, but it went off the page and I couldn’t see it.
And now I can’t edit it. *sigh*
It’s never as funny if you have to do it this way.
How can you tell?
They’re girls. Both of them.
