He’s levitationg…the tree was photoshopped in later.
What guy on a limb?
LOL haha
Why is the woman on the right the only one not dressed in Sunday best? And what is she holding?
What woman on the right?
she’s the scullery maid and she’s holding tonights supper….. I think it’s an arm.
She’s holding a dead squirrel, I swear to God.
If not, then it’s something dead – perhaps a single thigh?
Too fat to be an arm…
I feel I’m going too far with this.
I think it’s a chicken or a quail…
WHEN WAS THIS PIC TAKEN?LIEK THE EARLY 1930′S??????????
Seriously? Try the 1890s.
Oops…I mean “levitating”.
I’d like to know this history of this photo. Who/what/where/when
I’d like to know the why
Seriously, this has to be oldest photo on here to date. I’d like to know the story, too. Looks to be from the 1910’s or 1920’s, wouldn’t say? Just goes to show, there’s a comedian (or an eccentric) in every family since time began.
I don’t think so. It looks 1910s at latest. Maybe 1880s-1910s. Overall, though, It’s good to know that they took awkward photos even back then!
The uncle in the tree looks like he may be their family clown.
My mom showed me an awkward family photo from around the 20’s…They had good photo editing skills back then because a great-great-great uncle was edited into their family pic. (He died like 2 months prior and they didn’t want to leave him out.) Funny thing about the photo was that the edited uncle was larger…almost like an “Andre the Giant” type of proportion. The rest of the editing looked great, other than the size, especially for back then! LOL …
This would be a great beginning to a horror movie. The whole thing is creepy.
yeah, totally!
I´m pretty sure that guy above is a ghost
my first thought when looking at this photo was “Who farted?”
“What About Grandma?” Episode I: The nonconformist menace
Great that they had a sense of humor…usually no one smiles in these vintage photos….photography was very serious business!!
In fact everyone has a grump on their face! Creepy stuff.
That’s because taking a picture back then wasn’t as simple as it was now – people had to hold their poses for several minutes at least. That’s why people in old photos tend to look pissed. I wonder how long Tree Guy had to hold that pose?
I’m amazed that the man in the tree is able to keep his top hat on his head while maintaining that pose… That takes some talent (or strategically placed hat pins?)
that´s why I´m pretty sure he was a ghost.
Along with the earliest photos were the earliest photo bombers!
Who knew they could be so whimsical in the olden days?
Old photos like this always freak me out because the people all look they just killed someone.
I think the story is old time photos like that used to take a long time to expose, so you can imagine how irritating it’d be to sit there with a smile waiting. What gets me is, how uncomfortable the guy in the tree must be since he’ll have been there the whole time the photo was being taken.
In fact, if you’ll direct your attention to the 2nd & 3rd people from the right, you’ll see that they must have been holding hands or something at first, since there are one or two extra hands and some blurring.
They also didn’t smile a lot in photos in the old days due to poor teeth. Lots of teeth were missing, or snaggled.
I LOVE this pic! I think it may be my favorite so far. Awesome.
Love all the comments, especially the puns. This photo has been in my family forever. It’s my dad’s branch of the family tree…folks in Indiana. I wish I knew more of the story, but it’s always cracked me up.
“…my dad’s branch of the family tree”
LOL!
If the Photographer just took 3 steps back he could have fit cousin Fletcher in the pictures without hanging him from a tree. The things we know these days
Hey! My Hat and beard matches the gentleman in the middle sitting down
Weird!!
This was on the bottom of the front page.
Right below it was a link saying “Older Entries”.
With this, we are all witness to the first ever “horsing around” moment in a photo.
the first picture of trophy uncle buck
Looks like that little kid on the right stepped in some gum. Or a cow pattie.
Also, I can only see one leg on him! And, um, he’s wearing a skirt? Unless I’m mistaken on the gender, which is possible. In any case, Great Pic! Thanks for sharing.
What if the guy on the limb was a dead family member and they took his body and put it there to signify him being in heaven. Crazy, Craze if you ask me, Carl.
It’s nice to see that, historically, awkwardness has always existed.
I think cousin Fletcher is just hiding from that creepy child on the right.
Okay, for those who are interested in the history, I found the info. On the back of the photo, it says, “taken in 1889 in Beaver Township, Pulaski County, Indiana…Under the large chestnut tree in front of house.”
Next time he needs to warn the others about the grizzly BEFORE, the hogs the only stable limb in the tree.
And no one in the family thought this was funny???
