The Remarriage - Behind The Awkwardness

This is me, in the awful probably homemade dress with my Dorothy Hamill haircut, the day my mom and stepfather got married. Clearly, I am thrilled. And so is my brother.”

    One word – RECREATE!!!

  3. Kevin K. says:

Not to be pedantic, but as a former fan of the Dorothy Hamill haircut, that does not quite qualify.

  4. Cindy says:

This is such a sweet photo. Neither child seems very happy…

  5. Faith says:

I can’t stop laughing at your little brother OMG. I wish they had America’s funniest photos!!!

  6. Mary says:

I printed this photo and put it on my desk at work because not only is the look on her face funny, but that little boy with his back to the camera was not getting his picture taken – and that was his solution. Hysterical. I just want to hug him and tell him it’s going to be okay.

  7. Missy says:

What did he have your bags packed and you were out the door or what? Why is the little one wanting to get inside it seems and not being let in? This is heartbreaking! I am from a blended family, but I lucked out with a great step dad who adopted me as his own daughter. If I was a mother of children and was remarrying, I would have to have my kids blessings first. Permanent family members should include the whole family. That’s my over-analysis for the day. Feel bad for the kiddos here though. Makes me want to go rescue them.

  8. Renee says:

This is what most kids feel like when their parents remarry it is just these kids let it show! Everyone else someone told them to keep it to themselves…….Way to go Melaina and your brother for just saying screw it we don’t want this to happen!

  9. Diva Donna says:

Is he in a time out?

  10. Kimi says:

Haha you should she my step daughter in the majority of our wedding photos. Classic! She looks so mad in all of them but her dress looked alot nicer.

    • Missy says:

So it was enjoyable to you to have a stepchild who was angry? Wow. I think I would befriending the step children. It’s hard on them. But to each their own.

      • Cernunnos says:

Hmm. This website laughs at awkward family photos. He was doing the same; it could have been 20 years ago, for all you know. Issues much?

  11. Banana Mary Leeth says:

Has anyone else noticed that there appears to be someone in the right hand window? There is a definite shadow. With ears. And other things. This frightens me.

  12. V. Lee says:

This picture made me laugh/cry involuntarily. Awesome photo, with flawless, wry description. Like lots of people, I’ve been there… thanks Mom.

  13. Bob says:

Is the boy’s head o.k. from all the banging? 🙂

  14. oscarella says:

Hope they weren’t leaving you guys outside for their “honeymoon”…lol

  15. maridon says:

Dear MeLaina, that was me, and my little sister, the day our dad married our step-mom. I agree this is a work of art, like American Gothic. I feel your pain on that day. Happily it appears you and we as well, have lived to tell the story!

  16. Tess says:

lmao, your little brother cracks me up!
and your facial expression is priceless:)

  17. Springjack says:

If the lace on your dress resembles a haircutting apron, you might be from 1990.

  18. xxx says:

Girl, I am SO with you on this! My dad’s been married 4 (FOUR!) times, my mom was his first. Three stepmothers I have had. That’s why talk like Yoda I do.

  19. Anthony O'Neill says:

Is your brother beating his head against the door?

  20. Stacy says:

Oh man, that reminds me of when my Father married his most recent ex-wife. There’s a picture of me as a ten-year-old aggravated little girl stomping off when they were trying to take pictures of myself and my step-sister.

I didn’t like her then. 11 years of marriage and 1 divorce later and I still don’t like her. 😛 Sometimes the kids *ARE* right!

  21. taino sam says:

i saw the pick and the little boy reminded me of the ending of “Blair Witch”.

  22. Lindsay says:

Mom says, “That is enough Peter! If you can’t say anything nice about your sisters dress then go stand with your nose touching that poop brown screen door!”

Peter says, “But I was just repeating what she said!!!”

  23. Tara says:

Thanks to Disney movies, Step-Mothers are always assumed evil. Now, I had a step-mother that I was not too fond of (though as an adult looking back I think it was part her and part me, when as a kid it was all her fault, of course), but I am now a step-mother myself and I think I am pretty darned cool. Perhaps it was because we waited 3 years to get married when their mom got remarried months after, so the kids had time to get to know me. Who knows. But while I love this photo and this whole website for its awkwardliciousness, there were just too many anti-step-parent comments for me to keep my mouth shut 🙂

  24. Jan says:

Aww, I think it’s cute pic.

  25. bonnie says:

This picture makes me so sad.

Most re-marriages end in divorce bc she gets with some guy you KNOW isn’t going to treat her any better than the jerk she just divorced.

I am always EXTREEMLY suspicious when a man wants to marry a woman with children, especially a very beautiful little girl like this one.

Women need to be cautious- is it you he’s after? Or your children?

Do your children seem ‘uncomfortable’ around him? It could be they have picked up on a bad vibe you have overlooked.

  26. Jak says:

Amidst the splendor of the awkwardness, I can’t help wondering what the note pinned to the door says…

  27. bats says:

I seem to remember my Heart family mother doll wearing a similar dress.

  28. Turtleisland says:

Is the kid banging his head on the door?

  29. Nan says:

The Dorothy Hamill was a short bowl-cut ~ it flared out perfectly when she twirled on the ice. This style looks feathered and too long. The only thing worse than a Dorothy Hamill is a failed Dorothy Hamill. My condolences.

    • msunderstood says:

yep, I was hoping someone would point out that this is NOT a Dorothy Hamill haircut. This hair in this pic is clearly a late-80s-early 90s short haircut with feathered bangs.
      Great pic, though.

  30. AwkWerrrd says:

Aside from the story, I got a very ‘Samantha Micelli’ (Alyssa Milano on ‘Who’s the Boss’) – “I’m NOT wearing a dress” vibe from this pic! 😀

  31. tanyaya says:

there’s something a little blair witch about this pic

  32. Heidi says:

YES!! Ah wow. I too had the Dorothy Hamill haircut and pretty much THAT dress. Tho mine had an 18-inch “H” embroidered on it.

  33. Dianne says:

my mother would love that dress. She 72. What does that tell you?

  34. Lisa says:

I have a similar picture of myself “thrilled” in a hideous dress on the day my own mother married my step-dad. They have since divorced and he later passed away. I have all kinds of memories of the 8 years they were married, but I will always look at that picture and think, “Yikes! What a day!!” Lol

  35. carol says:

    This is just so sad.

  36. Uncuw Biww says:

    kind of sad but funny.

Even more sad…thousands of women are still wearing the Dorothy hamill.

  37. Joy says:

I feel for you MeLaina, I had the “Dorothy” haircut from ages 3-7… until I was brave enough to tell my parents that I hated it.

  38. Shonda says:

Mom! Mooooom! It’s my turn to wear the dress but Sissie says I can’t have it. Make her give it to me, Mom. C’mon! It’s myyyyy turn!

  39. Fritzy says:

This snapshot just breaks my heart. Please tell me you survived the stepfather intact.
My mom died when I was 14 & my sister & bro were only 3 & 4. Dad dated alot later
on, but never remarried, which selfishly I’m thankful for. He’d lost his mother when he
was young, and later told me that’s why he never remarried, because of how it would
affect us “kids.” He’d been through it himself, and couldn’t bring himself to do that to
us. It’s really very traumatic…I don’t think alot of newly single parents really under-
stand how it affects the children.

    • Frederick5 says:

Not everyone has bad step parents. My step mom is amazing and i love her very much. I know that if I ever married someone with kids, i would be the same kind of step mom. Makes me sad that your father never found love again.

      • Tara says:

THANK YOU. I made a comment separately on the issue but did not realize I could reply. I won’t repeat it all, but not all step-parents are evil 🙁 Also it is a REALLY hard job, and a thankless job (being a parent is a thankless job, but being a step-parent even more so!), yet we do it out of love. Because trust me, if we didn’t love our stepkids as much as our spouse, there is no way we could stay in it.

        • Emobunni says:

My dad dated a lot and my mom got remarried a few years ago. I never and still don’t get along with my step father because we have differing opinions but I have many friends with step parents who the love just as much as their biological parents.

  40. Jonah Schlagle says:

I wonder what the note on the door says.

  41. Lindsey says:

My guess is that they were caught playing hide-n-seek.
The little brother has been told to count to 100, so mom will have a minute to snap this pic before the girl makes a break for it.

  42. Lulu says:

They told the brother they wanted a picture of *just* his sister, and the door was locked. So he made himself “invisible”. Also, I had this dress in the late 80s. Can’t say that store-bought it looked any better.

  43. Tim says:

“It was another beautiful day in Stepford…”

  44. Marlene says:

Lol, this is so cute and funny, God bless you!
We can always look to children to display honesty and not try to pretend how they really feel!

    This picture is priceless 🙂

  45. andi in NC says:

The little brother in the background – hilarious. Her expression – priceless! I get the sense she is a total tomboy who is none to pleased to be in anything resembling a dress, much less one with a waterfall of lace….

  46. beegeek says:

I want your little brother to be my little brother. That is the best reaction to an unwanted step father I have ever seen.

  47. Starbelly says:

I can feel the pain. 🙂 I would love to frame this and hang it on my wall. This is a real work of art. 🙂

  48. No body wins this one…the dress is just….

  49. AJ says:

Oh sad! And hilarious. I think most of us can relate to this one on so many levels.

    • shannon says:

there’s a note on the door…what does it say? OH! It says “No Solicitors or step children, please.”

    • candygirl says:

Wow, a flashback from my moms remarriage. I had the same exact look on my face, but my head was just a little lower. Not often caught on camera, but a reality for many children. It is rare but possible that a step parent could love a child as their own, but unfortunately not always the case.
