Backstabber - Behind The Awkwardness

“I was home for the Holiday’s after I joined the Navy and completed boot camp. My father thought we should have a family portrait. My brother picked up a knife and held it over my unsuspecting father’s head.”

He finally had enough of his father paying more attention to the dog.

  2. Becca says:

Mark, you were very, VERY dapper young man ;]

  3. Will says:

Why did you put an apostrophe in “Holidays” and why did you capitalize it?

  4. Matt says:

Dad would make an excellent Bond villain. Just look at that expression!

  5. Blu says:

I actually like Mom’s outfit & shoes. She’s a perfect example of thefashions of that time.

    • Jaie says:

Agreed. And the daughter’s is pretty sweet for the time too. (I would def. have worn it.) BUT. The guys are all bundled up. The girls are all sleeveless. What season is it? Somebody’s gonna be really hot or somebody’s gonna be really cold. (And I kinda wonder if Dad is allergic to the dog and about to sneeze.)

  7. Robyn says:

ha ha! My husband used to do this to his grandma in their family photos. She was in her late 90s and clueless about it.

  8. Roberta says:

Dexter, is that you in your formative years?

  9. Leina says:

    This looks like a “Clue” photo-op. O.o

  10. Kathy says:

Is Dad wearing a turtle neck? How come I see cufflinks?

  11. Ang says:

It looks like a “dress as your favorite tv character” pic. Trixie from Speed Racer, Dr. Spock from Star Trek, Popeye, Richie Rich, and Little Orphan Annie. And of course, one of the 101 Dalmations is on hand for the pic.

  12. scoot says:

The stabbing is clearly revenge for last year’s Christmas present: that sweater.

  13. Annie says:

“The sun will come out tomorrow,
    betcha bottom dollar, tomorrow,
    Come what mayyyyyy!
    Tomorrow, tomorrow,
    It’s only a dayyyyy awayyyyyyy!!!!!!!!”

  14. peg says:

I’m guessing SOMEONE didn’t like the sweater Dad knitted for him……

  15. Pondering Tim says:

I meant…he’s been listening to the O’Jays too much. They had a hit in the late 60s with “Backstabber.”

  16. Pondering Tim says:

This guy has been listing to The O’Jays too much!

  17. Pam Mitchell says:

Thank goodness he lost the knife before we got married!

  18. James says:

Col. Mustard in the Library with the knife.

  19. Daniel Lynch says:

I wish you would post the year on these photos, if possible.

It’s actually become a game I play on this site — guessing the year of the photo. It would be interesting if the year was posted in a way that required revealing, so you could guess first.

This photo? Probably 1968 or ’69. You never can entirely be sure. Some people have style hangovers so that things look more dated than they may precisely be. But the clothes fashions, glasses frames, sweater, hair styles and color quality has me thinking that this is the late sixties.

    • AZ says:

I’m thinking 1973, the color of the young man’s sweater was popular in the early to mid-70s. In 1968/69 big hair helmet hair was still the rage, and the woman in the photo has a more natural do; that and the style of her dress says 1973-74, I had the same outfit, but mine was red, white, and blue.

  20. Dibba says:

Gotta love your brother’s sense of humour :) For some reason he reminds me of Virgil from Thunderbirds.

  21. Angie says:

    Save the dog!

  22. Bobbie says:

The only thing missing in this picture is Scooby Doo!

  23. me says:

    The holiday’s what?

  24. Cyndi says:

The first scooby doo decided he didn’t like the first shaggy!

  25. Alan says:

No one can leave tonight, because one of us in this very room….is the killer. Now to piece together the clues…oh,right, the knife. OK,then, well,me thinks we have a suspect.

  26. SB says:

    Is that the Royal Tanenbaums?

  27. Joan says:

The guy with the knife looks a lot like James Marsden!

  28. Antigone says:

    so THIS is Velma’s family!

  29. Les says:

The dad definitely needs a pipe to complement his pose.

  30. Vicki says:

Mr. Green. In the Conservatory. With the knife.

  31. cocamojoe says:

I now have an insatiable urge to play Clue.

  32. Is Mack The Knife-boy there wearing a sash? Or is that just a really funky turtleneck?

  33. Maurie says:

Hey Rick – the color of my dress and socks was orange – not red!

I was betting this was a cast photo for a production of ‘Annie’.

  39. Jan says:

It looks like Dad has seen the knife. So has the dog, he’s outta there!

  40. LKT says:

Muwahaha! I don’t know what is more sinister…your brother with a knife or what appears to be a dog’s head in the basket on the floor by your mother’s feet.

    Thanks for the laugh!

    • Melissa says:

Yeah, that DOES look like a dog head… but on examination, I see it’s just firewood… but a weird optical illusion!

  41. Tim S says:

Mark, thank you for your service to our country.
Oh, the picture? Yeah that’s pretty awkward.

  42. Lily says:

    The dog is so cute!

  43. Amice says:

    Harold and Maude vibe, anyone?

  44. rick says:

You could remove everything except the dad, the dog and the girl in the creepy red dress with matching red socks and this would still be a great photo.

  45. jersygrl says:

Forget the knife…guy in the Navy uniform is a cutie.

  46. Lucky_Cat says:

This looks like a cast photo from a murder mystery dinner theater.
