Don’t Blink - Behind The Awkwardness

“When my son Mike had his school photo taken, he was terrified of blinking and having his eyes closed. He wasn’t trying to be funny. He was wearing his favorite Roadkill shirt because he felt that he looked especially handsome in it.”

He has it nailed for his driver’s license photo!

haha this happened to me once….

  4. alekx says:

    Haha, so cute.
He kind of looks like a young Michael Ian Black with freckles.

  5. dweebcentric says:

my favorite part isn’t the eyes-closing phobia, but that he thought he looked especially handsome in this particular t-shirt. the one with the stretched out neckline.

  6. Shannon K. says:

oh my gosh i know him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this made my day!!

  7. jaklumen says:

My wife claims that celebrity chef Paula Dean must have a similar problem, but then, she also points out that not only do some of her photos have her wide-eyed (as she is apparently trying to avoid blinking or squinting), her smiles for some of them are strained. Something along the lines of “did you take the @#$!* picture yet?”

  8. April says:

Looks like Alfalfa from the Little Rascals. So cute!

  9. Victoria says:

Mike just found out he was expected to bring the turnips to Marnie’s Thanksgiving dinner.

  10. Jane says:

I’m ssssssoooooo jealous. Every year I tell the kids if they come home with a wacky school photo, I’ll pay them $25. Every year, the school photographer refuses to take the picture when they pose for the $! Our family would love to have this school photographer for just one year!

  11. ln says:

    1) he’s adorable
    2) my husband looks like this OR eyes closed in every one of our wedding photos
    3) unfortunately, I think our 7-year-old boy may have inherited this inability to have your eyes open at a normal width during a flash photo

Hmmm, maybe I have a couple of photos to submit…

  12. Kelly says:

Awesome! This is what I usually look like in photographs. It’s either that or closed eyes or (even worse) a half-blink, which makes you look superdrunk when you’re not.

  13. Clint says:

This has “possible Internet meme” written all over it. Photoshop him into your own family photos for “who’s THAT kid?” fun when you put ’em on Facebook.

  14. Fred says:

    I would prescribe a thyroid check…

  15. Rosy says:

After a look at my high school year my dad handed it back to me and asked, “What did you kids do to make the photographer hate you all so much?”

  16. jackie says:

Bless him….he kinda looks like he’s about to be roadkill….

  17. JS says:

He’s just really surprised that Mom let him wear his favorite shirt!

  18. 23Squidoo says:

That was probably taken around the same time they started putting soft drink machines in every corner of the school…

  19. Damon says:

“My son Mike”…as in Michael Cera? Kinda looks like him.

  20. Gordon Buttlove says:

Some schools take 3 pictures and you get to choose the least hideous.

    • Kaisee says:

None of the schools my kids went to did that. If you didn’t like the original photo when it came in, they had a re-take day but you were still taking your chances that the re-take would be better than the first.

  21. Jean says:

How adorable! I bet it was his first year in HS. Tell him he looked awesome in his Roadkill t-shirt.

  22. Big Mike says:

Yup, school will do that to ya.

  23. Laura says:

can’t sleep, clowns will eat me

  24. Lucky_Cat says:

LMAO I can’t do anything but laugh. This is really too cute.

  25. Alyssa says:

HOW FUNNY! Went to high school with Mike – saw this pop up on facebook this morning and said “HEY! I know that kid from high school!” Haven’t seen him in years but glad to know he is doing well! 🙂

  26. Mike says:

School photographers must get a kick out of taking crappy photos. Each year, they send home another clunker of a photo with my daughter having a weird expression on her face. They’ve got digital cameras. Do they even take a quick look at the pic before sending the kids on their way?

  27. heatherweather says:

Is it just me, or does he resemble the Karate Kid a little?!

  28. Liz says:

Don’t blink. Blink and you’re dead. Don’t turn your back. Don’t look away. And don’t blink. Good Luck.

  29. Sarah says:

    Blink and you’re dead.

  30. Tedeau says:

Kinda that “deer in the headlights” look, don’t you think?

  31. Liz says:

This has awesomeness written all over it! Thanks for the great Monday morning laugh!!

  32. Snowrider says:

Thank you Sharon! Mike must be a really good kid. Where is he now? The size of the photo is perfect. As I scrolled down I burst out laughing. We all have a REALLY awkward school photo in our past. Mine….gag…too long hair while wearing my “really cool” and dangerously flammable, polyester/nylon lesure suit shirt. Circa 1970 something…

    • Sharon says:

Thank you! Mike was a great kid and is now a successful adult, working as a producer for Comcast/NBC in Los Angeles.

  33. Amy says:

Oops, handsome, not hadnsome…it’s early and my coffee hasn’t kicked in yet!

  34. Amy says:

Adorably awkward or awkwardly adorable…you decide! (And he does look hadnsome in that shirt!)

  35. Some Duffy says:

Oh thank goodness I wasn’t the only photosensitive kid who did this. All my school pictures from a certain period are either hilarious or horrifying.

  36. Rick D says:

Looks like he just opened the door to the girls’ locker room.

  37. M says:

Haha, the shirt is hilarious. He does look like a rabbit caught in the lights of a car!

  38. texanbris says:

Looks like a screen grab from the Little Rascals.

  39. John says:

It looks like the photographer had told him to look at something other than the birdy.

  40. It's me Dee says:

Aw Sharon, Mike does look especially handsome in a deer-in-the-headlights kinda way!!
