Brotherly Love - Behind The Awkwardness

“This is a photo of me and my brother taken in 1979 when I was 4 and my brother is 7. it was taken at Olan Mills and there were other photos from this shoot, but none quite as magical this one. This photo is a running joke in our household and hopefully it will be in everyone else’s too.”

LOL. LOL. Hahahaha…this photo had me rolling on the floor. It perfectly epitomizes what AFP is all about. Hehe… oh my gawd. Love it. My favorite. LOL.

  5. Erika says:

    Who’s idea was this??? LMFAO!!

  6. Kari says:

Just stroke the furry carpet… Stroke the furry carpet…

  7. Louisa says:

    I love this hahaha

  8. Liz says:

Oh my word! I swear our horrible family photos were taken by Olan Mills as well. My parents spent a ton of money but we never hung them up they were so ridiculous!

  9. Sandra says:

Hysterical!! Although it looks more like ‘hey, don’t take my wallet!’

  10. zipper says:

Mad for Plaid, and LOVE the 70′s back ground!

  11. Alan says:

“What do you mean,’your trouser zips are caught together?’…..just get in the damn photo!!!”

  13. Mifty says:

And if we are granted the gift of a re-creation, please let at least one of these wholesome brothers have grown up to be a big scary biker dude with long greasy hair and tattoos!

  14. linda says:

Hey Ricky, I saw you and your brother on Ellen with this photo. You have always cracked me up!!!

  15. MIssRed says:

This is hilarious! Yes, you HAVE to do a “Then And Now” re-shoot….

  16. ej says:

this would make an amazing Now / Then photo.
take your brother to olan mills for a redo.

  17. Dee says:

my guess is they were supposed to hug, but Rick was reluctant. I can see his brother’s hand on his back, and it seems his brother is trying to get Rick to put his arm around him.

  18. Sammy says:

Oh yeah. This is a Hall of Fame-er! Only thing that would make this photo any more awkward would be an eye peeking out from that plaid union.

  19. LKT says:

My siblings and I had a portrait taken with that same backdrop at Olan Mills in the late 70′s. Thank HEAVEN we weren’t asked to assume THAT position! LOL!!!

  20. Carol says:

erm… This one makes me uncomfortable. Was the photographer some kind of perv or something?

  21. Brent says:

    Thank you!!!

  22. plaidkillz says:

WOW. Pretty sure that pose has since been outlawed in all states except Alabama and West Virginia. Priceless. Absolute money.

  23. mamasita says:

It could be worse …could be your sister

  24. heatherweather says:

    I love the plaid pants!!!

  25. Lil' says:

Hello photo! You’ve come to the right place! Now this is awkward. I hope this makes the cover of the next AFP book!

  26. BSmile says:

Hahaha…just wow! Takes a lot of guts to submit this one…although it’s not your fault for the extreme awkwardness. There should be an extensive class action lawsuit against Olan Mills for making kids pose for pics like this! (of course…they’ve unintentionally made this site so great…so there’s that).

  27. David says:

You know what they say, plaid attracts plaid.

  28. Angel says:

    Ewwwwwe… on multiple levels.

  29. DMF says:

I hope the separation surgery was successful. First time I’ve ever seen conjoined twins with a 3 year age difference…

  30. steph says:

WOW! this takes awkward to a whole new level. I am speechless. (your parents obviously liked it or you wouldn’t have this fine purchase all these years later)

  31. Amanda says:

Oh my Rick. Thanks for sharing!! What were your parents thinking? Wow. I think this is the epitome of what AFP stands for, and on the furry rug too! Kudos!!

  32. Peter says:

    Oh, that’s just wrong!!!!

  33. Theodore Roosevelt says:

  34. Dusty says:

No Way!!!!! That is awkward-tastic(patent pending)!

  35. It's me Dee says:

Love the back story at the use of the word “magical”. Thanks for sharing Rick, awkward at it’s best!

  36. Meitar says:

    Ha, that’s cute!
    And kinda akward.

  37. alison says:

I saw this and immediately had flashbacks to the lady at Olan Mills in Gainesville, FL. My mom was a sucker for their photo club. My brother and I could do spot on impressions of the lady saying “Hey turkey!” with a Southern Alabama accent. We had a lovely back to back rapper pose that required me to stand on about 6 wooden boxes.

  38. Carlos says:

Plaid golf pants and bowl haircuts – stylin’ !

  39. NannaLee says:

Oh…..Oh….Goodness….I had to enlarge this photo for a closer look….oh my…glad it was just the awkward poor choice of plaid….

  40. Glenna says:

OH how truly horrid. Yet, still funny. What the hell were they thinking asking you to pose like this?? (Love the plaid pants and haircuts too!) Glad the family has a sense of humor!

  41. Cheryl says:

What was it about the 70′s that screamed “bowl” haircuts and shag carpet? Love the pants!

  42. fiona says:

I don’t know where to look, this is just too awkward….

  43. Kristine says:

The plaid, the outdoors look next to the shag carpet, the bowl cuts…the fact that one looks so eager and the other one a little afraid- Yes, for all these reasons, I have a new AFP favorite.

  44. Joey says:

You are a very brave man but thanks for the laugh at your expense.

  45. Jennifer S says:

Can you please recreate now and send it in???

  46. deanna says:

the hair!? the pants!? the pose!? very awkward. :) thanks for sharing!

  47. Gwen says:

  48. chris f says:

  49. Carolyn says:
