Behind The Awkwardness: All You Can Eat
May 13th, 2012
“This is me and my mom, circa 1982. I was an extremely picky eater as a kid and each and every meal was a battle. An all-you-can-eat barbecue restaurant was my worst nightmare (probably my mom’s, too, from the look on her face). The view of my plate is unfortunately blocked by the flower, but I can assure you it was full, with the food expertly pushed around on it to appear half eaten. I don’t think my mom got to enjoy a single meal between 1976 and 1985. “

This looks just like Shealy’s in SC! The sign is still there!
Yes!!! It IS Shealy’s! You must live in Batesburg!
Wait, wait, wait. Is this Kauffman’s? In PA? It looks really familiar…
No, it’s Shealy’s Barbecue in South Carolina.
Am I the only one who sees that her glasses look upside down?
This is epic.
I LOVE this picture! It’s art.
I agree with you. Es una gran foto.
The funnier unknown fact of this picture is that the photographer was the little girls father whose glasses were also the same. (I know because the little girl is my aunt!)
It was the fashion!!!
The one thing I really don’t get – what’s the the glasses? I remember huge glasses were big (hoho) in the Eighties, but did America really not have kiddy versions? Just another reason why I’m glad to be European, our kiddy pics are so much less traumatic…
Less traumatic in Europe? Oh reeeeeaaaally? One word: Liederhosen.
You didnt follow the one rule in the background. Shame on you. lol. Nice pic.
You look adorable and your mom looks patient.
Your mother is much nicer than I am. There were no fights at my dinner table. Eat or go hungry, that was the choice!
She was nice about it because we were in PUBLIC!
I can’t tell you how many hours I spent at the table after everyone else had finished, choking down one bite of coleslaw (the bane of my existence at the time) at a time.
I love the almost-matching glasses.
And buffets were a nightmare when I was a kid, mainly because my mom insisted that we get our “money’s worth” and that I load up my plate with stuff I didn’t even want.
Looks like the food must have been flying around in there since they made you both wear safety goggles.
The little girl reminds me of Daria.
So you didn’t eat all you took?
Never. I was an expert at pushing my food around on my plate.
The sign in the background is perfect for this explanation!
Hilarious irony given the sign in the back “Take All You Want But Eat All You Take” ~ LMAO!
They say “YOUR EYES (err GLASSES) ARE BIGGER THAN YOUR STOMACH”. How true in this photo.
Thank you!!! The story about food is not what makes this photo, although I guess it explains the overjoyed facial expressions
but the glasses!!! They are something else!
Well, at least you were honest about it, bless your hear.
Her hearing is fine; it doesn’t need to be blessed.
