Behind The Awkwardness

Picture Perfect

“This is my family attempting to take an Easter picture circa 1986 in Mobile, AL. I love this because my grandfather is the only one looking. I’m pretty sure this is what all families look like trying to take a family picture with little kids.”

Nurse Jackie

“My dad at his college graduation party with the family… and a stripper! Yep, that’s me hanging off the back of the chair watching. And now I’m a nurse… Hmmm.”

Squeeze Play

“This is our daughter, Keira, soon after she was born. I hadn’t quite learned to swaddle her correctly and my wife hadn’t quite learned to burp her correctly. Ah, new parents.”

Thunder Down Under

“A photo of me with a bunch of speedo men (Australian swim team) at Sea World in Florida, circa 1987. My mother was like, “Go get your picture taken with Nigil!”

Pinned

“In middle school, I was the only girl on the wrestling team. My brother was on it as well and to save money, we decided to take our picture together. I now regret that decision.”

Portrait Of A Marriage

“Christmas Day 2005, around the time my sister and brother-in-law started to disagree about everything – including whether or not they wanted to be in the same photograph. Surprisingly, the marriage lasted for another 3 years.”

Mouth-To-Head

“My mom and the other lady in the picture have been best friends pretty much since birth, so when they had babies at the same time they thought it would be cool if we ended up together. The other guy is my age and even though we live 700 miles away from each other and have had no contact, we have mutual friends. Unfortunately, I already showed this picture to some of our mutual friends and I’m pretty sure he knows who I am now. At some point, we’re going to run into each other. I don’t even know if this will be an icebreaker, or just the elephant in the room.”

Free Skate

“I thought it would be great to ring in the new year by volunteering & supporting the Albany Allstars Roller Derby (un-finished) calendar project back in 2011. I really did use this as an awkward (yet endearing, I hope!?) Seasons Greetings family card!”

Just the Facts

“This is a photo of my sister (the murderer), my brother (the reporter), and my Dad (the victim). The way I’ve heard the story told, as I was still a few years from being born, they lived next to a reporter for the local news channel and one day, my dad decided it would be funny to stage this picture…complete with “blood stains” on his back. The back of the picture actually says, “Just the Facts, Ma’am, 8/01/75.”

Happy Boob Year!

“Me (small guy in the center) and my family at my Uncle Dale’s house for New Years. My dad (on the far left) thought they said “Happy Boob Year!” My mom tells me she never drank, ever. Right.”
