The Patriot
“This is my family’s one and only professionally taken portrait. I remember being so angry my mom made me wear the uniform from my Fife and Drum Marching Band (for which I also had no love). The photo sessions were taken at my grammar school so the entire school was able to partake in my misery. I am smiling though. Somehow.”

Dad Of Steel
“I asked my Dad if he wanted to see Man of Steel with me. Five minutes later he came down with this one. But he couldn’t find all the parts of his outfit, so he had to improvise. I’ve never seen him in a pink speedo, but I guess he always one on hand.”

Daddy Daughter Goth Night
“This is me (the goth one) and going to our church daddy daughter dance. I still dress goth but its really funny seeing the contrast between me and my family (and comparing our enthusiasm for the trip).”

Cavity Squad
“My childhood best friend’s family was very crafty and creative. We were always playing dress up. The dental-themed Halloween project was a major nightly endeavor that spanned weeks and involved many layers of paper mâché and tons of straws. We were a big hit in our neighborhood! I’m the nerd wearing a floss box.”

The Fisherman’s Pride Recreation
“While at a flea market several years ago, I bought a print called ‘The Fisherman’s Pride.’ It depicts a woman and her child by the seaside and the pair look exactly like me and my son–several people assumed we posed for it! So, I decided to recreate the image. I hired a photographer, had my hair professionally done in a ‘Seaside ‘do, (which really just means ‘wind blown’), and went into the studio for our shoot.
This is the result. Rather than actually going to the seaside and holding my son in my arms, or even using a seaside backdrop, I’m wrapped in a sheer cloth with my naked one-year-old on my lap. I hung a copy in my home for awhile since it was the only photo I had of me and my son at the time, but I quickly got rid of it when a neighbor asked why I was pretending to be a mermaid. :(”

Dance Like No One’s Watching
“I was a portly child, but enjoyed dancing. This was the outfit which I wore in a dance recital. Note the crop top and gut out stance!”

Project Makeover: Kid Edition
“That time my Mum took me to get a ‘makeover.’ She’s English so my best guess is she was trying to recreate what Queen Elizabeth looked like as a child as some sort of ‘homage’ to her country. I have no idea.”

Frowny The Clown
“Every year my mom’s bowling league celebrates Halloween. If my mom looks a little scary in this it’s because this photo is one of several my dad insisted she pose for before leaving. Mom is not amused. I think she’s had just about enough.”

Autumn Camouflage
“Mom made me this costume for my second Halloween in ’92 – Dad almost misplaced me in an actual leaf pile.”
